A teleconverter is a magnification lens that goes between a camera lens and a camera body. Teleconverters generally only work with specific lenses inside a manufacturer's line, so it's important to check the lens compatibility with the teleconverter before investing in one. Teleconverters are useful for extending the focal length of a lens without having to invest in a new one.

Types

Teleconverters are usually available in three different magnification factors: 1.4, 1.7, and 2x. Using one of these teleconverters increases the focal length of the lens it is put on by that factor. For example, a 70-200 f2.8 VR Nikon lens with a 2x teleconverter on it becomes a 140-400 lens. Since teleconverters are compact, it is an excellent way to get greater focal distance on your camera without having to carry around extra, heavier, lenses.

Limitations

Teleconverters generally work best on faster lenses, such as those that are f2.8 and better. One reason is that putting a teleconverter on a lens reduces the aperture by the amount of magnification on the teleconverter. For instance, in the aforementioned example, the f2.8 70-200 lens with the 2x teleconverter becomes a 140-400 lens with an f5.6 aperture. As long as the photographer can compensate for this decrease in aperture size, using a teleconverter is an excellent tool.

3. Or, wire dual subwoofers to a mono (single-channel) amplifier. Strip the wire, as described in Step 2. Connect the positive terminal of the amplifier to the positive terminal of the first sub, then connect a second wire from that terminal to the positive terminal of the second subwoofer. Repeat with the negative terminals. This is sometimes called "daisy-chaining."

4. Listen to your subwoofers while playing some of your favorite tracks. If the bass isn't as strong as you want, check to make sure you haven't inadvertently connected a positive to a negative terminal. This will make your subwoofer play "out of phase" and reduce the sound output.

2. Plug one end of one of the video cables into the camera's "video out" jack and the other end into the wireless transmitter's "video in" jack. It, too, should be clearly labeled and colored yellow.

3. Turn the camera and the transmitter on. The camera should begin sending its video signal and images into the transmitter, which should send out the signals via a radio frequency to be picked up by the receiver.

Hooking Up to a Monitor

4. Connect the wireless receiver's "video out" jack to the monitor's "video in" jack. The location of the jack on the receiver depends on the manufacturer, but it will most likely be found on the back. If you're using a standard television as a monitor, the "video in" jack will most likely be in the back. If it's an actual monitor, it will typically be on the side.

5. Turn on the receiver and the monitor and set the monitor to its proper video channel. This is usually labeled as "VIDEO" or "INPUT."

6. Tune the wireless receiver according to the manufacturer's instructions until it is in sync with the wireless video transmitter. The camera's images should appear on the screen.

If you have a Nextel phone and you accidentally deleted a text message from it, you can retrieve it with the right tools. All you need is a SIM card reading device to connect your phone's memory card to your computer, and a piece of software to retrieve and read your messages. It's a simple process that only takes a few minutes to set up.

Instructions

1. Buy a SIM card reader from a spy and gadget store (see Resource). As of December 2010, these cost $50 to $75.

2. Insert the software that came with the device into the CD-rom drive of your computer. Click "Next" and wait for the program to install.

3. Remove the SIM card from your Nextel phone. It is located beneath the battery. Insert it into the device reader.

4. Plug the SIM card reader into the USB port of the computer and wait for it to be recognized.

5. Launch the application that you just installed on the computer by clicking on the icon of the program that you just installed.

6. Download the list of text messages from your SIM card by clicking on "File" from the tool bar menu and selecting "Download Text Files." The texts will fill the application window and the deleted messages will be marked in red.

7. Choose the message that you want to retrieve by highlighting it, or ticking a check box beside the message. Hit the "Undelete" button to restore the message.

Get Clear Shots With The Polaroid Camera

Holding your camera correctly will minimize camera shake and will give you clearer pictures.

The Polaroid series of cameras was a system of specially designed cameras and film packs that produced a viewable picture within minutes of it being taken. The film pack contained individual sheets of film that included pockets of chemicals needed to process the picture. When the picture was taken by the camera, the sheet of film passed through two small rollers as it was being ejected from the camera and the pressure released the chemicals, causing the picture to appear. The cameras featured fixed focus length lenses which required the photographer to know where he was standing.

Instructions

1. Hold the Polaroid camera in your hand and observe the markings on the lens. In most cases, fixed focal length lenses will have the distance that will be in focus printed on the barrel of the lens. It will usually read "3 feet to infinity," which means that the photographer needs to be at least 3 feet away from the subject. If there is no writing on the lens, refer to your owner's manual for the actual distance.

2. Position yourself at least 3 feet away from your subject. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. If you feel yourself rocking or swaying, try leaning against a wall, tree or some other solid object that will help you stand still. You can also use a tripod with your Polaroid camera by screwing it into the base of the camera.

3. Hold the camera up to your eye and bring your arms close to your side and hold them tightly against your side. This will help eliminate any movement in your arms.

4. Slowly press the shutter release until the your hear the camera take the picture; keep your finger pressed until your hear the shutter close then release the shutter. Even pushing the shutter release too quickly can cause camera shake. By pressing and holding the shutter release you minimize the possibility of camera shake.

Sony color-codes all wires to match with a car's speaker wires.

The Sony CDX GT11W works as a CD player, satellite radio, MP3 player and USB flash player in car audio systems, and can generally be installed without technical assistance. The CD player organizes all wires in the back of the unit, and each wire is color-coded to match with speaker wires. You will save money by installing and wiring the Sony CDX GT11W yourself, with only the help of a screwdriver.

Instructions

1. Disconnect the car battery from the electrical system. Whenever you are dealing with electronic equipment, you must take every proper precaution. Open the hood of your car and look for the car battery; it looks like a black block with two large wires clamped to it. Use pliers to clamp each of these wires and disconnect them from the battery.

2. Remove the current CD player from the dashboard. As this process varies from car to car, read through the owner's manual about removing the stereo before attempting anything. You will need to unscrew the dash panel covering the unit. A smaller 1/8-inch screwdriver makes things easier as these screws can be small. Pull off the the dash panel from the CD player and then slowly pull out the player itself. Do not yank out the stereo; this can damage wiring.

3. Detach the wires from the old CD player, disconnecting each wire from the old stereo unit. Make sure that the wires do not retract into the dashboard as they will be hard to pull back out.

4. Connect the wires of the Sony CD player to the speaker wires. All wires will be color-coded to match each other. Connect each colored wire together, then locate a thicker black cable, which runs to the car's antenna. Insert the black cable into the hole on the back of the unit, which will be labeled "Antenna."

5. Connect the power wires to the CD player. A red wire and black wire must be connected to the back side of the unit near the left. Look for "Power" label on the back side of the player if you are unsure where they connect. Restore power to the car battery by re-attaching the wires. Press the "On/Off" button on the Sony CDX and the device will start up.

Install An Hd Projector

HD projectors require a dark room and some empty wall space for proper installation. Besides those basic requirements, the installation process is very straightforward. The most important aspect of the installation is the placement of the screen followed by the placement of the projector. Some users prefer ceiling mounted installations to save floor space. In cases where ceiling obstructions such as lamps or vents make that impossible, projectors may be placed on a table or a shelf.

Instructions

1. Place the screen. This will affect where and how the projector is installed in later steps. The ideal location for the screen is a large, flat wall on the side of the room that receives the least foot traffic. Ceiling installations must account for vents, lamps or other ceiling features.

2. Find the center line for the screen to ensure proper optical alignment. Cut a nylon string long enough to reach the minimum distance recommended by the projector's manufacturer. Use an assistant to hold one end of the string in the top left corner of the screen and tie the other end to a pencil. Pull the string tight and draw a small arc on the ceiling at the maximum distance allowed by the string. Repeat this process from the top right corner of the screen and draw an arc that bisects the first one to establish the center line of the screen.

3. Attach the projector to a power source and place it below the mark on the ceiling. Connect the projector to a DVD player or other component and turn it on. Adjust the projector's zoom and focus. Adjust the distance as necessary. Unplug the projector.

4. Pass all required cables from the stereo receiver and other components through the wall and ceiling to the location chosen for the ceiling mount. A professional electrician is recommended to install a dedicated power outlet for the projector.

5. Calculate the height of the projector. This number is often specified in the projector's user manual. The manual may call for a flat or zero vertical offset, which means the projector must be even with the top of the screen when operating. Universal ceiling mounts accept extension arms in most cases.

6. Install the universal ceiling mount so that the projector lens is in line with the screen's optical center. It is important to note that not all lenses are in the middle of the projector. Use heavy anchor bolts or decking screws to achieve the best results.

7. Attach the projector to the ceiling mount securely, but do not completely tighten. Connect the cables to the projector and turn it on. Verify that the image is square with the screen. Tighten the mounting screws to firmly lock the projector into place.

The TomTom Go 910 is a global positioning system or GPS. It uses satellite technology to provide a driver with directions to help him reach his preset location or address. If the device won't turn on, it's likely either the battery or power adapter is not working correctly and should be replaced. Troubleshooting can help you determine the cause of the problem.

Instructions

1. Attempt to power on the device. Hold down the power button for five seconds. If the device does not turn on, continue with troubleshooting.

2. Attach the TomTom Go 910 to a power source for charging. The TomTom can be charged using the car adapter or the home dock. Place the car adapter jack into the outlet on the bottom of the TomTom and plug the other end of the adapter into a cigarette lighter outlet. Start the car. Alternately, place the TomTom into the home dock so the bottom outlet is plugged into the bottom of the dock. Plug the home dock into the USB port on a computer. Power the computer on.

3. Allow the battery to charge for two hours. During this time, the charging indicator light, located below the screen on the bottom, right-hand corner of the unit, should be green, indicating that the unit is charging. If the unit is not charging, attempt to charge with an alternate charging device. It's possible that the charging unit is defective or not working correctly.

4. Attempt to power on the unit. If the unit does not power on despite charging, the TomTom battery is likely dead. Batteries should only be changed using an authorized TomTom service center. If the TomTom is still under warranty, call 1-978-287-9555 to make a warranty claim. Attempting to replace the battery or having the battery replaced at a non-authorized service center will void the manufacturer's warranty.

On-Screen Guide

Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) come with an on-screen guide that users can control with a designated remote control. When users turn on their TV and DVR, the on-screen guide will typically display what is playing on each channel and what programs will be shown in the next hours or even days. Users can often view information and reviews of programs. But, in addition, DVRs provide a "Record" option in the on-screen guide, which allows users to select programs to save for later viewings.

Recording Shows

After a user selects a ssave on a Digital Video Recorder, the DVR adds the command to its internal list of scheduled recordings and checks for any time conflicts. Then when the designated program is about to begin, the DVR enters record mode and saves the program's video and audio onto its hard drive, which is located within the DVR's casing. DVRs save shows in the same way that VCRs do, except VCRs record programs to cassettes while DVRs save data onto a typical hard drive found in any computer.

Playback

After a selected show has finished recording and has been successfully saved to the DVR's hard drive, the DVR adds the program to its list of saved shows on the on-screen guide. To watch a saved program, users navigate to the main DVR menu and select a swatch with their remote. The DVR will then locate the designated file on its hard drive and begin to play the program from its beginning, allowing the user to pause, rewind or fast-forward. From the main DVR menu, users can also choose to delete older shows from the DVR's hard drive to create more available space.

Install The Sirius Fm Direct Adapter

SIRIUS radio operates via satellite signals, which may conflict with an ordinary radio's FM signals, causing static and interference. The SIRIUS FM Direct Adapter connects a traditional AM/FM radio to a SIRIUS radio, reducing or eliminating the interference. The FM Direct Adapter can be installed using a professional installation service or you can connect the device yourself. The proper connections can be made by removing the vehicle's AM/FM radio from the dashboard. Some vehicles may require an additional adapter to complete the process.

Instructions

1. Remove the vehicle's AM/FM radio from the dashboard and disconnect its antenna cable, located near the rear of the radio.

2. Connect the additional adapter to the Direct Adapter's FM antenna cable, if your vehicle model requires it. Insert the FM antenna cable into the radio's antenna cable port.

3. Insert the AM/FM radio cable into the other end of the additional adapter, if necessary. Connect the adapter to the Direct Adapter's FM antenna socket. If you are not using an additional adapter, connect the AM/FM radio cable and the antenna socket directly.

4. Connect the FM Direct Adapter's mini connector to the SIRIUS radio's "FM OUT" connection, if the radio is not equipped with a vehicle dock. Connect the mini connector to the vehicle dock if your model of radio includes one.

5. Use the vehicle's AM/FM radio to select an FM station that receives little to no reception. Select the same channel on the SIRIUS radio. If you hear a clear SIRIUS broadcast, installation is complete.

The Magellan Roadmate 760 is a Global Positioning System that provides accurate navigation for even the most directionally challenged users. Though the Magellan Roadmate 760 is generally praised for its reliability and ease of use, there are solutions to some of its most commonly reported problems.

Magellan 760 Does Not Acquire Satellite Signals

If your Magellan 760 GPS device has trouble acquiring the satellite signals necessary for operation, there are two things you can do. The first is to perform a soft reset on the device, which means that the device is reset to factory settings but without erasing any saved data. To do this, remove the batteries from the device and wait for three minutes before replacing. This will cause your Magellan 760 to begin searching for the necessary satellite signals. The other thing you can do to help your Magellan 760 acquire the signals is to take it outside, away from mountains, tall buildings or heavy foliage where the GPS receiver has a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. Wait a few moments while your GPS receiver acquires the signals.

Device Powers Down Automatically or Display is Faint

If your Magellan Roadmate 760 GPS system powers down by itself or the display is faint, the problem may lie with the unit's battery. Check to make sure that the battery is properly installed; if it is, use the adapter to fully charge the battery. The rechargeable battery pack that powers your Magellan Roadmate 760 is protected against overcharging, so you can charge your unit at any time without worrying about damage. For best battery life, remember to turn your GPS unit off when not in use. Instructions

1. Connect your camcorder to your computer using the USB cord that was included with your camcorder. The cord should have one small side that connects to the port on your camcorder labeled "DV" and another larger side that connects to a USB port on your computer.

2. Click on the "My Computer" icon on your computer and navigate to the icon for your Sony camcorder to explore the video files stored on your camcorder. On a Mac, the camcorder icon should automatically show up on your desktop.

3. Drag and drop the video files from your camcorder onto your computer. Right click on the files and select "Create copy" to copy the files to your computer while leaving the original file on your camcorder.

4. Eject your camcorder from your computer just as you would any external drive once you are done copying files to ensure you do not damage the files remaining on your camcorder. To eject the drive, right click on the icon of the camcorder on your computer and select "Eject." Many of today's digital cameras will not include a time stamp, which includes the day and time a photo was taken, on the images taken with the camera. Though some camera models may include this feature, many Sony models do not. As such, those seeking to add a time stamp to their photos will need to use a special program that will superimpose the time and date on the photo for viewing and printing. Programs such as Visual Photo Time Stamp and Boxoft Batch TimeStamp to Photo are examples of software that will superimpose time stamps on your photos.

Instructions

1. Download the program. Perform a "Google" search of the software you wish to download to identify the program's developer. Avoid downloading the software from free software sites, and download the program directly from the developer. Visual Photo Time Stamp is developed by Dts8888, for example, and so should be downloaded directly from their website.

2. Install the program. If you have a Mac, open your computer's "Finder" menu from the dock, and click "Applications." Windows users must click the "Start" menu and select "Programs." Find the program you have downloaded in your "Applications" or "Programs" menu, if you have a Mac or PC, respectively. Click the program you have downloaded to open the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Open your photo project. Depending on the program, use the "Add" or "New" button to import a new photo to be time-stamped into the program. The program will import the time and date information, and you will be able to view it on your photo. You can now adjust the format of the time and date if you desire. Save the file to your desired location on your computer once you have finished.

If you have a selection of pictures, perhaps from a holiday or outing, you may wish to put them in a sequence to playback in a slide show video. Windows Live Movie Maker can be used to create your slide show from individual pictures on your PC.

Basics

1. Click the "Start" button. Click "All Programs" and select "Windows Live Movie Maker."

2. Select the "Home" tab and click "Add Videos and Photos." Browse to the folder where your pictures are stored and hold down "Ctrl" and click each photo to select it. Click "Open."

3. Click and drag each photo thumbnail to arrange the order. Click "Play" to preview your video.

4. Select a photo thumbnail and click "Edit." In the "Duration" box, type a value to determine to amount of seconds the picture appears for.

Additional Features

5. Locate the "Automovie Themes" section. Here, you are provided with a selection of movie presets -- this will arrange your slideshow, inserting captions, transitions and effects based on the preset chosen.

6. Locate the "Add" section in the "Home" tab. Here you will find options to add a title, credits and captions to the project. Click one of these options to add, type the text in the provided box, adjust the visual properites using the "Text Tools" above and click elsewhere on the interface to save. Click the text thumbnail and drag it to change the point at which it appears.

7. Click "Add Music" if you wish to insert music into your slideshow. Browse for a music file, select it and click "Open."

8. Select the "Animations" tab. Here, you can select from a range of transitions and effects. Select one of your uploaded pictures and click one of the "Transitions" or "Pan and Zoom" effects to apply it.

9. Click "Save Movie" and select "For Computer" from the drop down list. Browse for a save location and click "Save."

Garmin Ltd. is the parent corporation of the various Garmin subsidiaries that manufacture and distribute a wide range of aviation and consumer devices such as global positioning systems (GPS). Founded in 1989, Garmin made a name for itself years later with its personal GPS line that would be adopted by many of the largest auto manufacturers in the world. The Garmin c330 StreetPilot is an aftermarket GPS that mounts to the dashboard or windshield of your car.

Features

The c330 StreetPilot comes equipped with City Navigator street maps as well as a large database of points of interest (POI) such as motels, gas stations, movie theaters and more. The c330 features a touch screen as well as multiple voice recordings to choose from. You also have the option of setting alarms with custom POIs, such as for traffic cameras, speed traps or construction areas. The c330 also has an access port for a standard SD memory card. This card is used for updating maps, which require either a subscription or annual update that costs approximately $60 a year. Unfortunately, if you do not buy timely updates, you will get multiple warnings that your maps are out of date every session you use it.

Updates

Although the c330 requires regular updates, there are options to paying the $60 a year from Garmin for their official maps. When you first buy a Garmin product, if you register it immediately, you will get a free update if within 3 months of a new update or a discount coupon (50 percent off) if within 6 months. You also have the option of purchasing a lifetime map update for approximately $200. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, you can export Google or Yahoo maps into the proper text format and then use the SD card to load them. This only works with firmware updates 4.0 or higher.

Programming Tips

Take the time to familiarize yourself with the many options on the c330 that will make your trips more pleasant. The first thing you should do is to ignore the "live traffic" option because it will prevent you from using freeways. Also disable toll roads unless you prefer to use them, as the StreetPilot will default to the nearest toll road.

When selecting between speed and travel time choose the "balanced" option--this will typically result in the smoothest, fastest route while avoiding major obstructions. Finally, input your home as well as other common locations you travel to, such as work or to relatives' and friends' homes. Custom POIs will greatly reduce the time required to calculate return trips.

6. The highest signal you can achieve is 100, although this is unlikely. You will probably get a signal between 70 and 80. The higher the signal, the less likely it is you will lose the signal during bad weather.

Photo shoots traditionally are done in beautiful locations, whether indoors or outside, to highlight the subjects' own beauty. That doesn't mean they always have to be shot in such locations. Unusual settings can give a wide variety of striking images. The cliche in choosing such locations might be to "think outside the box," but the reality is unusual locations allow you to create your own worldview.

Black and White

Old, abandoned houses can make good settings, especially if you are photographing a rock band or an artist. Old houses also can work for glamor photography as well, however, because of the stark contrast between the crumbling beauty of the house and the shining beauty of your model.

Shooting in black and white gives greater contrast, too, between your model and the background. Use the background, though. Look for the peeling wallpaper, the rickety stairs, the ragged, tattered curtains. Place the model at the window looking out and shoot from both inside and outside the house. Have the band members stand on different steps of the stairs in vague tribute to The Beatles from "Magical Mystery Tour." Show the artist contemplating old, half-hanging art. Use the widow's walk and even the dungeon-esque basement.

Use the Crowd

Public parks may seem traditional, but a busy one can make for an interesting moving-through-the-crowds photo shoot with lots of extras. Be careful not to get clear shots of the people you're not intending for the shoot or be prepared to get them to sign release forms in order to publish or sell the photos.

Shoot with a telephoto with narrow focus on your models, however, and you will get the other people just a unrecognizable blurs. Use the parts of the park not usually seen in wedding photos. Look under the bridge and away from archways and trellises.

Junkyard Beauty

Junkyards are the most unglamorous locations, yet using one for unusual shots can work. Get permission to do the photo shoot from the owner.

Many older film cameras made it difficult to compose a photo effectively because the image in the viewfinder didn't correspond to the image seen through the main lens. This difficulty was resolved by single lens reflex (SLR) cameras, which used a mirror to show the photographer exactly the same image that would be exposed on film. Digital SLRs work the same way, except that the image is received on an electronic CCD sensor rather than photographic film. These digital SLRs, or DSLRs, are available in inexpensive starter models and high-end professional models, but the differences aren't always obvious.

CCD Sensor

The heart of a digital camera is the charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor, which works like your computer screen in reverse. It's an electronic device that detects light and turns it into an electronic signal. The image is measured in thousands of pixels, or megapixels, but even entry-level cameras have high pixel counts. Top quality DSLRs have a CCD sensor the same size as a 35-mm film, meaning it can be used with the same lenses as a film SLR. The sensor in entry-level models is roughly one-quarter the size, yielding images without the depth of field that's available from a top camera.

Exposure and Focus Control

A second major difference between entry-level and professional DSLRs is their handling of exposure and focus controls.
