Use A Sb80 Flash On A Nikon D90 Camera

The Nikon camera brand is well known for compatibility, and owners of a D90 digital camera seeking to use it with an SB-80DX flash will not be disappointed. Despite the flash's vintage, it can be used in conjunction with the D90 very successfully, though some features, like the full-TTL, called iTTL on Nikon cameras, are absent due to the flash's age. However, you can use the flash in automatic or manual mode, and it makes an great secondary flash for those with multiple lights.

Instructions

1. Turn the flash: Hold the power button until the LCD screen lights up green.

2. Loosen the hotshoe mount on the flash's foot by unscrewing the thumb screw.

3. Slide the flash onto the hotshoe on the top of the D90.

4. Tighten the thumbscrew on the flash's foot, to lock the SB-80DX onto the D90.

5. Set the flash to Automatic or Manual mode using the MODE button on the flash -- with A standing for automatic and M standing for manual. Follow the instructions in the user's manual for more information about both of these modes. Through the lens metering (TTL) will be available on the flash, but it will not work with this camera and the flash will not fire.

Maximizing Camera Battery Life

Lithium-ion batteries are the most common rechargeable batteries used in digital cameras.

The rechargeable batteries in digital cameras are generally designed to last between three and five years. However, these types of batteries contain a number of heavy metals that can be harmful to the environment if not recycled. This makes it essential to maximize your digital camera's battery life; doing so will also give you the opportunity to take more photographs and save money on new batteries.

Disable Automatic Settings

Many cameras feature settings that automatically adjust the camera's aperture, shutter speed, focus and flash to optimize the camera's performance in any given situation. While these features make taking photos easier, they also drain the camera's battery by forcing it to constantly monitor the light source and setting for the photos. To have more control over the images you capture, as well as to optimize your camera's battery life, disable this feature and set the aperture, shutter speed, focus and flash manually.

Use Features Sparingly

Many features that digital camera users take for granted are the most power-intensive features on a camera. Features that require the use of a motor, like zoom, and features that require the use of light, like flash and the LCD viewfinder, can quickly drain the camera's battery. Opt to use the camera's regular viewfinder, only use flash when lighting requires it and frame your photos without zooming to extend your camera's battery life.

Turn Off the Camera

This may seem obvious, but turning off the camera when you're not using it -- even if you are just prepping for your next shot -- can greatly improve your camera's battery life. Many cameras come with power saver settings that place the device in "sleep" mode after a certain period of inactivity; however, cameras still consume energy while hibernating. To avoid unnecessary energy consumption, only power on your device when absolutely necessary.

Care for Your Battery

To preserve the overall life of your rechargeable battery, you must take care of it. Do not store the battery or camera anywhere where temperatures climb higher than 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow your camera's battery to discharge entirely before recharging it. This process, known as cycling, ensures that the camera's battery capacity stays relatively high for the duration of its life. According to the Battery University website, the average life of a rechargeable battery is between 300 and 500 cycles, so cycling the battery is also a good way to estimate its age. Many battery manufacturers set the depth of discharge (DoD) for their batteries at less than 100 percent, so your battery may be "fully discharged" when it reaches 10, 15 or even 20 percent capacity. For example, recharging a battery with a DoD of 80 percent when it reaches 20 percent capacity counts as one full cycle. Battery life also decreases in cold weather, so your battery's lifetime cycle count may be lower in colder temperatures.

Performance Gains

Unlike most rechargeable batteries whose charge cycles are measured in hours of continuous use, digital camera rechargeable battery charge cycles are measured by the number of shots that can be captured on a single charge. Most high-end cameras can capture around 500 images while using the camera's default settings. By disabling the camera's automatic settings, using features sparingly, turning off the camera when it is not in use and taking care of your battery, however, you can potentially increase the number of shots you can capture by 50 percent.

Creative Ways To Recharge A Battery

Recharging disposable batteries with lemon juice.

It never fails. Your battery dies at the exact moment when you need it. Neither a recharger nor a spare pair of disposable batteries is available. Before you declare the situation hopeless, try these creative ways to recharge a battery.

Trickle Charging

According to Instructables, an online instructional guide, you can recharge most batteries using a slow charge known as trickle charging provided that you do not overcharge the battery. A low current charge is considered one amp for an ordinary device, such as a cell phone, iPod or digital camera. The website suggests using alligator clips to connect the battery to a current regulator, like a flashlight or Christmas lights. Place an alligator clip on the negative terminal (-) and another clip on the positive terminal (+) on the battery needing charging and connect the other clips to a charged battery (i.e. 12 volt) or current regulator. Hold your finger over the battery, so you can manage the temperature of the battery as it's charged. If the battery gets too hot, terminate the recharging process. Turn on the current regulator and give your battery some time to recharge.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is not just a natural cleansing agent, but it can also recharge batteries. Do It Yourself, an instructional website, says that lemon juice when it covers an alkaline battery can reactive the electrons in the old battery. The website recommends immersing a dead alkaline battery in a cup of lemon juice for an hour and the acid in the juice should jump-start your batteries, recharging up to 85 percent of its original energy. This method works well for AAA batteries.

Freezing

Although rechargeable batteries are slowly replacing disposable batteries for most electronic gadgets, a number of devices still rely on disposable batteries, such as remote controls, alarm clocks and hand-held video games. To preserve and prolong battery life, Do It Yourself suggests storing batteries in a plastic bag placed inside the freezer. While this recharging method does not recharge a dead battery, it does add energy to a battery that is not completely depleted. The website states freezing disposable batteries extends battery life by as much as 5 percent over time. Remove the battery from the freezer before using it to allow time for it to defrost.

Buy A Laptop For Audio Recording

People use laptops for many different applications. Audio recording is a popular way to use a laptop. There are specific things to consider when buying a laptop to use for audio recording. Different laptop companies offer different options.

Instructions

1. Ask friends, family members and professionals for their suggestions concerning a good laptop for audio recording.

2. Consider the processor speed. The faster the processor speed, the faster you will be able to burn your audio recordings to a CD. Processor speed also affects the quality of the audio recording when you save it to your computer. The minimum recommended audio processor speed is 1.6 Gigabytes per second using an Intel Dual Core Processor.

3. Check the available memory. In most cases, you need at least two Gigabytes of Random Access Memory so you can store your audio recordings and possibly a recording program.

4. Make sure the laptop has a CD recorder and microphone. This enables you to record your own audio and burn CDs so you can listen to music anywhere a CD player is available.

5. Look at battery life and power requirements. Most laptops are set to use only the bare minimum power to enable the battery to last longer. This affects your audio recordings by making them skip. You may need to purchase an extra battery.

6. Contact a company to special order a laptop designed for the type of audio recording you will be doing. Dell offers customized laptops, or you can contact a local retailer for more information.

7. Purchase a top-quality recording program if you will use your laptop for professional or semi-professional audio recording. Most computers come equipped with only a basic audio recording program.

Make A Poor Man'S Photography Studio

You can provide chairs for clients.

Photographers may focus on taking striking pictures but at the end of the day they must have the necessary equipment and lighting to get those photos to come out just right. Commercial studios provide those necessities but can be expensive to rent, lease or own. Homemade studios are much less expensive and much more convenient. They require only enough space for portraits, head shots and still life shots and often can fit neatly into a small room. Setting up a poor man's studio is not overly difficult and if the photographer already has necessary equipment, she can create a studio rather quickly.

Instructions

1. Select a room for your home studio that has white walls and fairly high ceilings, advises Scott Bourne on the Better Digital Photography website. White walls make it easier to work because they don't cast strange colors onto the pictures and they can brighten pictures that require a lot of light. The ceiling should be at least two feet higher than the tallest subject you plan to shoot, Bourne says.

2. Determine whether you will need a dressing room. If you do a lot of portraits, head shots or fashion shots, you may need an area close by for your models and clients to change clothes, touch up hair and makeup and wait while you work, Bourne says. Set up a place in the studio or nearby, such as a coffee room, a large bathroom or a large walk-in closet. Install flattering lighting and enough mirrors and hangers for your models and clients to change and touch up comfortably. Include a makeup table as well.

3. Set up your studio lighting. You may use strobe lights and if you have a window, purchase or make curtains or blinds so that you can use natural light when you want to, Bourne says. Position the lights and camera equipment so that they do not obstruct the picture or make the room so cluttered that clients cannot come in and out. Use equipment with wheels that you can easily move in and out of the room. Devote an empty wall in your studio to photo backdrops.

4. Set up storage space in or near your studio where you can keep equipment that would otherwise clutter the studio when you are not using it. Do not expose your studio to the elements via leaking roofs or faulty plumbing. Use surge protectors to prevent electrical surges from damaging your equipment.

5. Set up a work desk in your studio so that you can lay out photos and organize your work. If using a computer and printer, make sure that your desk is sturdy enough that it will not wobble or topple, causing your computer and printer to fall.

Use Gps To Save Gas

Today's technology helps people in many ways. One such device with advanced technology is the Global Positioning System, or GPS, and it can save you time and stress. One other thing a GPS can save you is money spent on gasoline. You can reduce the amount of gas you use by knowing plan a trip with your GPS.

Instructions

1. Use the settings option in the GPS menu to change to the shortest distance, instead of the fastest time, and push "Enter" or "Save." Less miles and lower speeds will provide you with better fuel mileage, and help you save money on the amount of gas you need.

2. Go to the avoidances option in the menu of your GPS and choose to avoid cities or towns and save this selection. Cites and towns negatively affect fuel mileage by causing you to stop and go at lights and when stuck in traffic.

3. Enter your destination into your machine by the method you normally would use. There are many different methods to do this, such as by address, from your favorites, or by categories such as restaurants, hotels or other popular destination points.

4. Review the path chosen by your GPS using a map of the region through which you will travel. Make sure that the route selected is reasonable and that you can sensibly follow it during your trip.

5. Listen to the GPS systems that offer traffic advice to help save gas. Standing in a traffic jam or a long detour will cause your gas mileage to worsen. Some GPS systems come programmed to allow for automatic traffic updates and scans to save you this headache.

6. Follow the directions your GPS gives you and enjoy the ride knowing that you will save gas and save money along the way.

Inspection For Proper Use Of Calipers

Calipers are sensitive to damage and misuse.

It is crucial to inspect calipers for improper use before using them to measure precision parts. Improper use can include dropping them or using excessive repeated force to make measurements.

Significance

Calipers are used to measure a variety of things. Since many of the dimensions have to be within a fraction of an inch, it is important to check the condition of the calipers to ensure that the measurements are accurate.

Procedure

Close the calipers all the way and hold them up to a light source. Improperly used calipers may have a gap between the two main measuring blades. If so, you may want to set them aside or have them fixed as the gap can cause false measurements.

Considerations

Clean the set of calipers off before inspecting. Dirt and debris can cause the gap that may lead to inaccurate readings, so make sure that all hindrances are removed from the main slide. Although a gap could signify improper use, it is best to clean the calipers before proceeding with an inspection.

Wire A Threeway Switch To Control A Ceiling Fan

Three-way switches are the perfect solution for flexible light control, but their benefit can be put to use in other applications as well, such as controlling a ceiling fan from two different locations. This wiring scenario is a little more complicated than a single-pole installation, but by following simple directions, any do-it-yourselfer can wire a three-way switch to control a ceiling fan.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the circuit prior to working on it.

2. Remove the existing light fixture. Test the wires with your voltage tester to ensure that the line is dead. You should see that even though it is a three-way circuit, the light fixture still gets connected to a hot and a neutral line. How the circuit was wired will determine which wires are which. For example, in some situations, a white wire may be carrying the voltage. If this is the case, it SHOULD have black tape on it, identifying it as a current-carrying line.

3. Assemble the ceiling fan as per the manufacturer's instructions, and hang it from a ceiling fan-rated box.

4. To wire the ceiling fan to the three-way switch circuit, simply connect the white fan wire to the neutral wire in the ceiling box, and connect the black and blue (if it has a light kit) wires to the hot line. Connect the ceiling fan's ground wire to the ground wire in the ceiling box. Wrap each connection with electrical tape and gently tuck the wires up into the ceiling box.

5. Finish installing the ceiling fan's canopy and turn the circuit back on. Your ceiling fan will now be controlled by the two three-way switches.

Protect A Coax Cable

Coaxial cable is used to bring video signal or Internet access into the home via a PVC coated conductor. When installed properly, coaxial cable is designed to withstand the elements and provide years of functionality. However, coaxial cable does have a flaw: It's an excellent electrical conductor -- one that could inadvertently bring high levels of electricity into the home during inclement weather and ruin appliances. To protect the cable and appliances, such as television and computer equipment, a coaxial cable surge protector should be installed.

Instructions

1. Remove the coaxial cable from the back of each appliance you want to protect. Satellite boxes, cable Internet boxes, and television sets are all susceptible to power surge.

2. Screw the coaxial cable onto a coaxial cable surge protector. These surge protectors are made to stop current at the appliance. Surge protectors are made in two styles: a box style that requires you to ground the protector through a ground wire and a cylinder-type surge protector that works without the need for a ground.

3. Screw the surge protector into the appliance if you choose a cylindrical surge protector. Attach a length of coax cable from the surge protector to the appliance if you are using a rectangle-style surge protector.

4. Tape the connections with self-vulcanizing weatherproof tape for added protection. You may also wish to tape any outdoor connections with the tape to prevent the infiltration of moisture that can ruin coaxial cable. On outdoor connections, wrap the self-vulcanizing tape with a layer of electrical tape for stability.

Use Lithium

Lithium is the chemical element with an atomic number of three. It has several unique properties that make it useful in many applications. The following steps will show some of the more important uses of this very light metal organized by physical property. Read on to learn use lithium.

Instructions

1. Consider lithium's specific heat of 3582 joules/kg - Kelvin. This is the highest specific heat of any solid, making it the best choice in many heat-transfer applications, including nuclear reactors.

2. Look at lithium's electrochemical potential of -3.04 volts. This is an extremely high value and makes lithium an important anode material. Lithium is very light with a density .534 g/cm^3, making it especially useful in small batteries.

3. Research lithium's pharmaceutical effects to see that lithium salts, especially lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), are used as a mood stabilizer in the treatment of manic depression. These salts help to regulate the amount of active glutamate (a neurotransmitter), which is thought to affect the patient's mood.

4. Use lithium chloride and lithium bromide as desiccants (drying agents) because these compounds are extremely hygroscopic and absorb water readily. Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) absorbs carbon dioxide readily, making it especially useful on spacecraft and submarines. Lithium stearate (LiC18H35O2) is mixed with oil to make a common high-temperature lubricant.

5. Alloy lithium with other light metals such as aluminum and magnesium to make aircraft parts. Lithium is also mixed with ceramics and glasses such as telescope lenses to increase their strength.

6. Make optical resonance crystals with lithium niobate for use in telecommunications products such as mobile phones. Other technologically advanced applications include the use of lithium deuteride as a fusion fuel in hydrogen bombs.

Telephoto Lens Facts

Telephoto Lens Facts

Sometimes good photography subjects, such as hot air balloons or hang gliders, are too far away to capture on film. At those times, telephoto lenses are the best solution. A telephoto lens has a narrow angle of view, a very long focal length (normal focal length is about 50mm), and can magnify images across long distances, making them excellent for wildlife and nature photography and candid shots.

History

History typically credits Thomas Rudolphus Dallmeyer as the inventor of the photographic telephoto lens in 1891, but other people also invented them during the same time period.

Function

Telephoto lenses function much like telescopes by narrowing the scene and bringing subjects closer into view.

Focal Length

On a 35mm camera, a telephoto lens will have a focal length of 85mm or more.

Elements

A telephoto lens consists of front lens elements with a positive focus, and rear lens elements, or a telephoto group, with a negative focus.

Warning

"Camera shake" can be a problem when using a telephoto lens. When the focal length is long, it's harder to keep the lens steady.

Fun Fact

As of October, 2006, the world's largest non-military telephoto lens is made by Zeiss and has a focal length of 1700mm.

Set Music As A Ringtone

Making music a ringtone is not difficult.

Ringtones are an expression of individualism. They are a way to let the world know what your musical tastes are, or what you find funny or artistic. Fathers can have their children's voices as a ringtone. Music lovers can have their favorite band's song as a ringtone. Music can be uploaded from computers, or downloaded from third-party websites, to be used as ringtones on a vast array of cell phones. The process of making music a ringtone on a phone varies by phone, but the procedures are similar.

Instructions

1. Upload desired music to the cell phone. This can be done in a variety of ways. You could use ringtone creation software. You could send the music to your phone via USB, Bluetooth or email. You could download the music from a website or ringtone provider (see Resources).

2. Locate the "Settings" menu on the phone.

3. Browse the Settings menu to find out where ringtones can be changed.

4. Edit the ringtones on the phone, and locate the music you uploaded to use as a replacement for the preloaded ringtones already available. Most ringtones last between 15 and 20 seconds, so having music files that are this long would be optimal. However, many phones are capable of playing segments from longer song clips, or even full songs. This will vary depending on the phone.

5. Call the phone from another phone to see if the changes are in effect. Consult the owner's manual, or call customer service if you have further questions.

Sennheiser's instrumental microphones use a super-cardioid diaphragm that allows an extremely wide range of sound frequencies to be recorded.

Function

Sennheiser's condenser and dynamic microphones have been designed in wired and wireless formats. Several models of wireless transmitters have been produced. Premium Sennheiser wireless microphones incorporate a transmitter into the body of the microphone, allowing performers to move around the stage without body packs or other devices.

Other Uses

Sennheiser has also developed head-worn and small lavalier microphones that can be used in several different environments. These microphones are often used in public-speaking environments and television productions.

Tungsten E2 Problems

Introduced in 2005, the Palm Tungsten E2 is a PDA with a large color screen, long battery life and Bluetooth technology. Although the E2 is an improvement over the Tungsten E, it still suffers from several problems related to connectivity, features and power.

Battery

Although the E2 has a longer battery life than the E, it does not offer a user-replaceable battery. An irremovable battery means that if you experience battery issues you must send the device to the manufacturer to be fixed. Having to send the device to the manufacturer can prove more costly than replacing it on your own.

Wi-Fi

Although the E2 was the first Palm device to have Integrated Bluetooth technology, it does not come with Wi-Fi. Because the E2 is geared towards business professionals, Wi-Fi may be a necessity for some users. If Wi-Fi is a must, there is an expansion card available.

Voice Recorder

The E2's lack of voice recording technology may annoy certain business-minded users. CNET indicated that voice recording capability is a must for business-friendly mobile devices.

Processor

Even though the E2's 200-MHz processor is an improvement from the E's 126-MHz processor, PC World indicates it is still too slow to adequately play video. Additionally, the E2 has difficulty opening large PDF files in Adobe Reader.

Use A Hood Dryer

You don't have to visit a salon to use a hood dryer.

A hood dryer, or bonnet hood dryer, offers an all over and even dispersion of heat for drying your hair and setting professional looking hairstyles. Ordinarily found in beauty salons, home hood dryers also exist. Using a bonnet hood dryer allows you the ability to achieve a professional finish to your hairstyle, whether it's casual or formal. Hood dryers are designed for ease of use, so they can be used at home with virtually no problems.

Instructions

1. Plug the hood dryer into a power outlet.

2. Clamp the base of the hood dryer to the back of a chair. Alternatively, you can sit the hood dryer flat on a table behind where you will be sitting.

3. Position the hood of the dryer directly over where your head will be.

4. Turn on the dryer. To dry your hair, a medium setting is adequate. To set a perm or dye job, a higher setting is preferred.

5. Sit beneath the crown of the hood dryer for the time instructed for the product you are using, or until your hair is dry. The length of the process varies by hair type and depends on whether you are drying or setting a hairstyle.

Print A Postersize Picture With Lettersize Paper

Reduce the image size on a file to print it.

Digital cameras take photographs that are often thousands of pixels in dimension to capture each tiny detail and nuance. However, home printers aren't capable of printing these large pictures. As a result, if you would like a printout of a large picture, you will need to use your photo editing software to shrink the photo to a manageable size. Each software program is different, but the general steps for reducing the size of a picture are similar.

Instructions

1. Open the picture file using your photo editing software.

2. Look for an option that says "Image," "Picture Size" or something that indicates that you will be able to reduce the size of the photo. Do not use the crop option, because that is designed to remove part of the picture.

3. Find the area on the image size menu that asks about the picture size. Some photo editing programs allow you to choose the size in inches. If this is available, set the vertical size to no larger than 11 inches and the horizontal size to no larger than 8 inches if you are printing in portrait orientation. Select the option that says "Constrain Proportions" to keep the image from distorting. If the program only allows you to choose pixel sizes, use trial and error to configure it, as pixels are relative to the resolution of the image. Begin with 1000 pixels and work down from there until the image fits on the paper when you print it.

4. Select "Save As" and choose the JPEG option. JPEGs are designed to retain most of the essential details on photographs. If you are prompted to choose a resolution, select "Best" or "Highest Quality." This will keep the image looking crisp and sharp.

5. Choose a name for the file that is different from the name of the original file so that you can start over or choose a different size later on.

Reduce Noise In Koss Sparkplug Headphones

Koss Sparkplug Headphones are made with silicone earpieces that compress for insertion in the ear canal to expand for nose suppression. The Sparkplug's L-shaped design strengthens the wires running from each plug to the gold-plated mini-jack that plugs into an iPod or MP3 player. Although designed for noise suppression, Koss headphones could make hissing and crackling sounds that can be corrected if you follow these steps.

Instructions

1. Try a different set of headphones or earbuds to isolate the problem either to the Koss headphones or your listening device. The noise might not originate with the headphones.

2. Dial down the volume on your portable listening device to determine if the Koss headphones are being overpowered. Distortion will result if the volume on a personal audio device is raised beyond the response level of the headphone speakers.

3. Clean the mini-plug pin by brushing lightly with a file or fine-grit sandpaper and wiping it off with a cloth.

4. Press the mini plug firmly into the audio jack. Static and craqckling will occur if the pin is not pushed in the jack all the way.

5. Press the in-line mute button on the Koss Sparkplugs, then press it again to clear the switch. A loose connection, or misaligned switch parts, can cause headphone noise.

6. Gently adjust the plug in the audio jack to make a secure connection, then twist each of the two audio wires between a thumb and index finger to determine if the wires are stretched, cracked or loose. Any of these factors can cause noise in the earbuds. Twisting the audio wires gently in your fingers can sometimes restore the sound, but this improvement may not last long.

Replace A Mitsubishi Hc3000 Lp Projector Bulb

A burned out lamp will cripple your home theater projector. The lamp is crucial to allowing the projector to display the image on your screen. Unfortunately, projector lamps have a limited lifespan and will need to be replaced every few years. Recognizing this, most projector manufacturers make it so owners can replace the lamp themselves, without sending it in to a repair service. Owners of the Mitsubishi HC3000 projector can easily replace the lamp themselves with just a screwdriver.

Instructions

1. Power off your HC3000 and disconnect the power cable. Allow the projector to cool down for about an hour. Turn the projector over so the bottom is facing up.

2. Loosen the screw holding the lamp cover in place. The screw is a captive screw and can't be removed. Lift the lamp cover up and off of the projector.

3. Loosen the three captive screws holding the lamp in place. Pull up and grab the lamp handle and slowly slide the lamp straight up and out of the projector. Don't pull it out too quickly or you can break the bulb.

4. Grab your replacement lamp by the handle and slide it into the projector. Make sure not to touch the glass on the lamp when you are handling it. Push the handle down so it locks into place.

5. Tighten the three screws on the lamp. Replace the lamp cover and tighten the screw.

6. Plug the projector back in and power it on. You have to reset the lamp timer so the projector knows you have installed a new lamp. When the projector powers on, press the left arrow, right arrow and "Power" buttons on the control panel at the exact same time. Hold the buttons for at least three seconds and the timer will reset.

What Is Iso In Photography

In photography, ISO is a measure of sensitivity to light. ISO--along with aperture and shutter speed--make up the "photographic triangle," the balance required to capture the correct exposure in each photograph. Choosing the right ISO is the first step in taking quality pictures.

Film Vs. Digital ISO

In traditional film photography, the film's ISO (previously known as ASA) indicated how sensitive the film was to light. Film ISO commonly ranges from 100 to 1600 and is printed on the film canister. The camera is set to match the ISO of the film loaded and remains the same for the entire roll of film. Changing ISO requires changing film and resetting the ISO on the camera.

In digital photography, the ISO is a measure of how sensitive the image sensor in the camera is to light. Digital ISO covers the full specturm of film (100-1600) and more, extending the range ever upward. Without the limitations of film, ISO can be set on a shot-by-shot basis, if desired.

Effect of ISO on Exposure

The lower the ISO, the less sensitive the camera or film is to light. Conversely, the higher the ISO, the more sensitive the camera or film is to light. Higher ISOs can be used to freeze action or to handle low-light settings, however, as ISO increases, the exposure is subjected to more "noise."

ISO and Noise

Noise, or graininess in film photography, is a loss of clarity appearing as speckles or color artifacts. As ISO increases, so does noise. Noise is more prevalent in compact digital cameras due to the small size of the image sensor, but even the very best high-end cameras are not immune from noise. Typically, the better the camera, the higher the ISO at which noise becomes an issue. As a rule of thumb, above 400 ISO noise is a factor and should be considered when selecting the best ISO for the shot.

Choosing ISO

An ISO of 100 is adequate for a broad range of photography, and, in fact, many photographers choose to leave their ISO constant at 100, adjusting aperture and shutter speed instead. Others will adjust their ISO based on the type of photography.

ISOs under 100 are considered slow speed, and when used with a tripod and a stationary subject, produce the finest-grained photography. ISOs between 100 and 200 are referred to as medium speed and can be used for all-purpose photography--scenics, pets, family or sporting events and just about any photo opportunity. ISOs 400 and up are fast speeds, best for freezing action or shooting in low-light situations.

Using Higher ISO

With limited light and fast-moving action combined, increasing the ISO is frequently a good choice. Other situations warranting higher ISO include concerts, plays and other "no-flash" events. With digital photography, consider "bracketing" critical shots--shooting the same picture at a range of ISO settings to ensure the optimum shot is captured. More importantly, take time to experiment with higher ISO before you need it to gain confidence in chosing the right one instantly.

Homemade 75 Ohm Fm Antenna

If you have an FM receiver with a jack for an external antenna, you'll note that the jack is usually specified for 75-ohm antennas. If you're unfamiliar with an antenna design, building an antenna that will work at a specific resistance may seem like a difficult task. But it actually isn't--you can build an antenna that works with a 75-ohm input fairly easily and inexpensively.

Instructions

1. Cut a 30-inch length of 300-ohm twin lead cable. Don't be concerned that the cable is a 300-ohm cable and you're making a 75-ohm cable. The cable is merely used as the active element that receives the signal.

2. Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the both ends of the cable. Twist together the separate leads at each end of the cable.

3. In the middle of the cable, cut one of the two elements of the cable and remove 1/2 inch of insulation from either side of the cut with your wire strippers.

4. Solder each bare wire from the middle cut to one of the tabs of a 300- to 75-ohm transformer.

5. Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the transformer by plugging it in.

6. Connect the other end of the coaxial cable to the antenna input of your receiver.

Use Autoexposure Bracketing

Exposure bracketing is a technique used by photographers to ensure proper exposure in tricky lighting situations. Many cameras have a built-in auto-exposure bracketing function that will allow you to bracket your shots with ease. Here are the steps needed to use auto-exposure bracketing.

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with your particular camera's auto-exposure bracketing function by reading the manual. This will tell you what buttons or menu functions you will need to use.

2. Find a subject that you want to use auto-exposure bracketing on. This function is intended for use in tricky lighting situations, when there is a high enough contrast in light values so that some of the photo must be fall into the highlights or shadows. This might include situations where there is strong backlighting, or a strong contrast in tone between the subject and the surrounding area.

3. Turn the auto-exposure bracketing mode on.

4. Choose what type of bracketing you want. Most bracketing functions will take three photos: one at the metered exposure value, one exposed at a higher value and one at a lower value. Some functions may have additional configurations.

5. Select how much exposure value you want to space the bracketed shots by. The standard value is 0.7 EV; however, you can increase or decrease this as you like, depending on the situation.

6. Compose your frame, focus on the subject and depress the shutter button to start taking your bracketed photos. The number of photos depends on the bracketing configuration. Usually, it will be three.

Nikon Camera Instructions

Nikon cameras are renowned for their ease of use and intuitive control features. One of the advantages to owning a Nikon product is that they have changed little over the years, even when transitioning to digital formats. Late model film cameras and current model digital cameras are nearly indistinguishable by their controls alone. Nikon also pioneered the bayonet-style F-mount system, which allows photographers to use nearly any Nikon lens from the 1950s onwards on a modern camera.

Mouting Lenses

Since the lens mount is one of the terrific features Nikon offers, examining this serves to highlight one of the many reasons why Nikon is a top brand. The metal F-mount lens mount system on the camera body is durable and works best with Nikkor, Nikon's own brand of lenses. While other manufacturers do create compatible lenses, Nikkor's product is designed to be used with this proprietary technology and guarantees functionality.

To mount a lens on a Nikon camera body, remove the protective cover on the camera body by twisting counterclockwise and pulling towards you. The cover will gently release. Remove any protective covering from the mount end of the lens and locate the small white dot located near the lens mount end. Align this with the same white dot found on the camera body and insert the lens, twisting clockwise until secure. The lens is now mounted. To unmount, hold the lens release button located on the right side of the lens mount mechanism and twist counterclockwise until the dots are aligned, then pull the lens out of the mount and replace the cover.

Image Media

Loading the image media will vary from camera to camera. This is true whether the camera is digital or film based. Nikon single lens reflex cameras can use 35 millimeter film, or varied types of digital storage media such as an SD card or Compact Flash card. This will vary depending upon the model.

For 35mm cameras, open the camera back. The process for this varies from camera to camera. This will reveal an empty cartridge area on the left and a take up spool lined with sprocket pegs on the right. Slide the cartridge into the left hand area and secure. Unroll the film leader across the shutter plane and insert into the slot in the take up spool, aligning the sprockets on the film to the pegs on the spool. Wind the film until secure, then close the camera back firmly. Many Nikons will have a small square film card holder; this can be used to insert the end of the film box with ISO and number of exposures.

For digital Nikons, the card slot is usually located on the right hand side of the camera. Review what type of media the camera requires--some digital cameras require SD cards and some use Compact Flash. Slide the card slot door open and align the card with the interior slot. Insert the card until a click is heard, then close the card slot door. If the camera LCD reads -E-, then an error was made. Otherwise, a number should be displayed--that is the current number of exposures available at the current resolution settings.

Metering and Photographing

Nikons work in a similar fashion when it comes to metering and the actual process of imagemaking. This is true for digital and film based cameras. If the camera has a built in light meter, it is located along the bottom of the viewfinder. There are two types of light meter readout. In older cameras, a needle swings to align with a number along the bottom, indicating the correct shutter speed based on the selected aperture and film speed. In newer cameras, the meter shows a--sign on one end, a + on the other, and a 0 in the middle, with bars that light up. The correct exposure occurs when the bars are balanced at the 0 setting.

Press the shutter button halfway to activate the meter on older cameras; on newer cameras the meter is active when the unit is on. As the lens moves, the meter moves as well based on the metering mode available on the camera. Older cameras will allow spot metering, metering from one area only. Newer cameras will average a meter reading from many spots on the lens, giving a more accurate reading.

Once accurate settings are obtained, press the shutter actuation button located on the top right of the camera body to create your image.

Finished Products

Once the pictures have been taken, the finished film or digital media card may be removed for processing. For film cameras, rewinding the film into the metal cartridge is necessary. This is accomplished differently based on different camera models, as Nikon has produced both manual and automatic rewind systems. When the film is fully rewound, it is safe to open the camera back and remove the cartridge.

For digital media, open the card slot door located on the right hand side of the camera. In cameras that use SD cards, press the card gently into the camera and release. The card will pop forward. In Compact Flash models, there is a small square button in the card slot area. Push this to release the card.

Your digital images may also be processed without removing the card from the camera by using a USB cable to connect the camera to a computer. With the unit powered "OFF," connect the USB cable to the computer and to the slot on the left hand side of the camera, located under a rubber cover. With the computer on, turning the camera on will import the images.

Connect A Telescope To A Laptop

You can connect a USB or serial telescope to your laptop computer.

A telescope opens the universe to your eyes. No longer is the sky just a dotted series of distant stars. With telescopes, planets, comets and the moon can be more thoroughly studied. However, traditional telescopes limit the enjoyment to the telescope itself with no easy way of sharing the spectacle. But many telescopes now offer connectivity to computers to allow recording, sharing and viewing of celestial wonders via your laptop.

Instructions

1. Install any drivers or software that came with your telescope by inserting the CD into the computer and letting Windows recognize it. A pop-up should appear asking if you want to install the software. Confirm that wish wish to start installation and follow the directions that should accompany the installation program.

2. Attach the serial-to-USB adapter to the serial connection of the telescope's cable. Serial and USB connections are easy to distinguish, as serial connectors are round and USB connectors are rectangular. Most telescopes still use serial connections, although most modern laptops do not have a serial port, hence the need for the adapter. If your telescope connects via USB or if your laptop possesses a serial port, then this adapter is unnecessary and the connection can be made directly.

3. Power on the telescope, if applicable, and plug the USB end of the adapter or cord into any available USB port on your laptop. The computer should automatically recognize the device and finalize installation of the drivers.

4. Run the telescope software to capture and view images and video on your laptop.

Using Wide Angle Lenses

Wide angle lens for a digital camera

A wide angle lens will let you capture a greater field of vision for your picture. It gives you more of a panoramic effect for your pictures without having to stitch pictures together taken as separate frames. A wide angle lens is useful when you are photographing the interior of a room and capture as much of it as you can. Interior decorators use wide angle lenses frequently to snap pictures of their work, and architectural photographers also use them to take pictures of buildings so they get the entire building in one frame. Read on to learn more about use a wide angle lens.

Instructions

1. Following the instructions for your particular make of camera, mount the wide angle lens and make sure that it is on properly.

2. If your digital camera has sensors for wide angle lenses, change the settings to wide angle.

3. Choose whether or not you want the exposure to be manual or automatic. Lighting requirements inside a room, where a wide angle lens is commonly used, can be insufficient to take the picture without additional lighting.

4. Snap a sample picture, and see if the results are satisfactory.

5. If the picture is too dark, consider opening window coverings to bring additional light into the room. If that still doesn't bring in enough light, turn on some incandescent lights in the room to brighten the picture up. If you have supplemental photographic lights, position them to get the desired effect.

Comparing Prices On Tv Cable Companies In Hemet Ca

Comparing prices is always a good idea, especially in today's economy. The trick today is not to be swayed by the cable companies' introductory prices, but to find out what you'll be paying after the first year of service.

Instructions

Comparing Prices

1. Visit Connect My Cable, a website that does comparison shopping for you. Type in your address, and it will give you a list of cable and satellite options for your exact area, not just Hemet. This is helpful because some companies are in one part of a city, or even a small town, but not in other parts.

2. Compare the most appealing service packages by selecting the boxes next the appropriate packages (on the right hand of the screen) and clicking "Compare Offers." Your choices will include Dish Network and DirecTV and may include Comcast, Time Warner and AT&T U-verse.

3. Find out what the service package will cost after the first year by clicking on the "Packages" section for each company. A window with more details, including the later monthly cost, will pop up. There are packages that include all the movie channels, DVRs, HDTV and several tiers of channels.

4. Multiply the rates. Multiply the first and second yearly rates for each company (12 x intro rate + 12 x rate) to find out which one has the best price.

Nikon D200 Tips

The Nikon D200 was introduced in November 2005 as the followup to Nikon's successful digital SLR, the D100. With a larger LCD screen, 10 megapixel sensor and revised metering system, the D200 was a successful model.

Using a D200 gives the photographer minute amounts of artistic control. It has several image modes ranging from automatic preset to fully manual. The D200 uses the Nikon bayonet-style F-mount lens system, so lenses are interchangeable with almost any other Nikon camera, past and present.

Focus Mode Selections

The Nikon D200 has the ability to offer a combination of both manual and autofocus in the same lens. Located on a switch at the front of the camera, the photographer can choose between autofocus, manual focus and continual autofocusing modes with the flip of a switch. The D200 offers four different focusing modes -- dynamic area with subject priority, which places priority on a single subject closest to the camera; group dynamic, which allows the photographer to select a group of focus; dynamic area, which allows the photographer to select one of 11 focus areas manually with the camera's calculations; and single area, which allows the photographer to set the focus on one area alone. The ability to switch between focus modes quickly gives a level of dynamic control to the photographer, and allows for the mode to be changed at a moment's notice.

Shooting Speeds

Unlike its predecessors, the D200 has the ability to shoot in single-frame mode as well as two continuous modes -- high- and low-speed continuous. The low-speed continuous mode allows the photographer to choose between speeds of one to four frames per second. High speed continuous mode allows the top speed to be reached at 5 frames per second. The continuous shooting modes make use of the camera's built in memory buffer, which is displayed on the LCD as frames are being shot. Other shooting modes include a self-timer and mirror mode, in which one shutter actuation raises the mirror and the next takes the shot, similar to a continual exposure or bulb setting.

Auto Bracketing

The D200 also has an automatic exposure bracketing system. This feature is particularly useful in eliminating guesswork for exposures. Based on the meter reading or settings of the camera, the D200 will take several shots of the same scene, all with different exposure values. This can be set in increments of from 1/2 stop to a full stop of variation. This eliminates the need to guess or reset the camera in tricky lighting situations.

Use A Pentax 67

Medium format roll film.

In most regards, the Pentax 67 medium format SLR operates like smaller 35mm SLRs on which Pentax based the design. The major difference comes when loading and unloading 120 and 220 format roll film. This article assumes familiarity with 35mm SLR film cameras and 35mm sprocketed film and explains perform the operations that differ when using a Pentax 67 with medium format sprocketless, roll film---specifically loading and unloading film.

Instructions

Loading and Unloading Film from a Pentax 67

1. Find an area away from direct sunlight to load the film. Locate the 120/220 switch on the upper right side of the camera, and turn it using a coin so it points to the type of film you have. Remove the roll of film from the outer foil or plastic packaging and set aside.

2. Open the rear cover of the camera by sliding down the steel release located on the bottom left side of the camera. If you find an empty black plastic or metal film spool in the left side film chamber you must take it out and place it in the right side. Release the round film spool holder on the outer bottom left side of the camera (turn it and pull down) and pull the spool out of the chamber.

3. Place the empty spool in the right film chamber by turning and pulling down on the round steel film spool release on the bottom right side of the camera. Insert the empty spool so that it locks into place at the top of the chamber. Then turn and push closed the spool release at the bottom of the camera.

4. Remove the strip of paper tape from around the roll of film, and insert the film into the left film chamber so that (looking from the bottom of the camera) the film will unroll in a clockwise direction. (As the paper lays across the back of the camera you should see the outside of the paper with printing on it.) Gently pull the tapered end of the paper across the back of the camera, and insert it into the slit of the empty spool in the right film chamber.

5. Using the film advance lever on the top right of the camera, wind the paper around the empty spool one or two cranks. Then carefully continue advancing the film around the spool until you see a vertical arrow printed across the back of the film paper. Align this arrow with the small colored indicator for the film type (120 or 220) you are using. This small mark is above the shutter opening and below and to the left of the viewfinder.

6. Before closing the camera back, look at the pressure plate on the inside of the door. If the plate is not set to the correct film type, gently push it in and slide it to the opposite side. You can confirm that it is set correctly by looking at the film type indicator on the outside of the camera back.

7. Close the camera. Be certain the film door release latches shut. Continue winding the film advance lever until the number "1" appears on the film counter. The shutter is cocked, and you are ready to start shooting.

8. Shoot the film as you would with a 35mm SLR. When you have reached the end of the roll of film, continue winding the film advance lever until you feel and hear the end of the film unwind from the roll that you inserted.

9. In a dimly lit area, open the back of the camera, and remove the exposed film roll by reversing the steps you followed to insert the empty spool on the right side of the camera. Depending on the brand of film, you will need to secure the paper around the film by peeling off the adhesive backing on the paper tape on the outside of the finished roll or by licking the adhesive backing like a postage stamp.

Compare Prepaid Phone Plans

Prepaid phone plans allow you to get a phone without the hassle of being locked into a lengthy contract. They are also good for those who cannot be approved for a cell phone contract.

Types

There are three kinds of prepaid calling plans: pay-as-you-go plans, limited plans and unlimited plans. Choosing a pay-as-you-go plan or a limited plan can be expensive if you use your phone on a daily basis, since you must purchase a lot of minutes at the regular rate.

Features

Some plans offer just unlimited talk minutes, unlimited talk minutes and unlimited text messages. or unlimited talk minutes, unlimited text messages and unlimited web access. If you have a phone with web access and plan to use it, then you should choose a plan that includes data usage, even if it is a little more expensive. It will be cheaper than paying for Internet access per megabyte used.

Considerations

If you choose a limited plan, make sure it offers the option of purchasing additional minutes. With pay-as-you-go plans and unlimited plans, this should not be an issue.
