Record Voice Memos On An Ipod

You can record voice memos on an iPod either by hooking up a compatible microphone to the portable music player or by loading a voice file from your desktop computer to your iPod. Either method allows you to take down memos and store reminders, which makes the iPod more than just a music player. Follow these steps to record voice memos on an iPod.


Instructions


1. Get a compatible microphone and hook the cable up to the Dock Connector port on your iPod. Make sure you have the connecter lined up properly before inserting.


2. Select the recording quality you want to use for your voice memo. Low quality recordings are mono, and they use approximately half the disk space that a high quality recording uses.


3. Highlight "Record" and select to begin recording your voice memo. You have 2 hours of recording time, provided you have the disk space available to store the voice memo.


4. Speak directly into the microphone, but do not press your mouth against the surface of the microphone for best results. Articulate your words so that you can clearly understand the recording later.


5. Select "Stop and Save" when you have finished recording your voice memo.


6. Check the recording by heading to the main menu and selecting Voice Memos from the "Extras" option.

Light boxes are a simple piece of photography equipment but when used correctly, they can be very effective. For example, you can use them to light an object and remove shadows for commercial photography and you can also use them to showcase your own photographs in an exhibition. They are used by many professional photographers. By following a few simple steps, you will soon be adding light boxes to your collection of photography skills and equipment.


Instructions


Studio light box


1. Choose your subject. Studio light boxes are mainly used for advertising photography because they remove shadows from the product as it is lit from all sides. The use of light boxes can be seen in commercial photographs for products like perfume and jewelery. Also, according to Food Photography, they are also often used when photographing food. This results in a cleaner, shadow-free photograph which makes the picture easy to edit for commercial photographs.


2. Place your product in the light box. Position it towards the center of the light box as this is the point where most of the light meets. This will reduce shadows to a minimum and will increase the reflection on the object, resulting in the most professional-looking finish. However, as long as the product is in the light box, the majority of shadows will be removed. Don't be afraid to move your product around to suit your final image.


3. Plug the light box into a plug socket and turn it on. Now you should be able to see your product should being lit from all sides. If the light box does not come on, check that it is connected to the socket correctly and that socket is turned on.


4. View your product or take your pictures. Now that the light box is turned on you can view your product clearly. Take this opportunity to adjust the position of your product before taking your pictures. You are now ready to take pictures of your product.

5. Get your photos developed into negatives. You can either develop them yourself, in which case you will have to leave the negatives to dry, alternatively if you get your film developed at a shop, then they will usually provide a set of negatives with your prints.


6. Line your negatives up on the light box. Position your sheet of negatives on top of the light box or, if you are using a side view light box, slide them into place on the side. Make sure the sheets are the right way around and are not back to front or upside down.


7. Plug the light box in and turn it on. Connect the light box to a wall socket and make sure the electricity is turned on. Keep the cables out of the way or tape them down so they can't be tripped over or accidentally unplugged. If the light bulbs are weak and not as bright as they should be, check the connection and if you are using a battery operated light box then check the batteries.


8. View your negatives. The light box should let you see your negatives more clearly without having to hold them up to light, this is traditionally used to help photographers decide which ones should be processed but it can be used on its own as part of an exhibition or photography display. This can make your display more interesting and can give viewers an insight into how you achieved your final photographs.

With so many cell phones to choose from, and new models being released every month, the challenge of determining which one is best for a teen can be intimidating. Knowing how teens use cell phones, and what features are available on today's phones, is important in making an informed decision.


Service Type


The first decision in choosing a cell phone for a teen is whether to opt for a standard phone plan through a cellular service provider or to purchase a prepaid phone. Standard phone plans are billed monthly and often require a contract term of one, two, or three years. In many cases these plans include rebates for a free or heavily discounted handset.


Prepaid phones, on the other hand, are usually much more simple phones, ideal for emergency or occasional use. These phones can be purchased at most major electronics retailers, department stores, and even drug stores. Rather than agreeing to a long-term contract, users of prepaid phones purchase minutes in advance. More service time can be purchased as needed, thus making it easier to limit the amount spent on the phone's use.

Cell Phone Models for Teens


Besides the aforementioned keyboard-equipped phones, a number of cell phone models stand out as perfect options for most teens. The Samsung Solstice is a mid-priced touch screen phone with Bluetooth connectivity, a camera, and an audio player. The LG Glance is an even more affordable option with many of the same features. The Motorola Razr is described as a "multimedia" phone, but has more general use features and fewer professional applications than many phones in this category, making it ideal for teen users.


The Apple iPhone, while among the hottest tech gadgets on the market right now, is a higher priced, more feature-intensive phone. Its capabilities are in line with its price, but teens seeking a basic cell phone, even one that contains certain extra features, will likely find what they need elsewhere.

A laptop battery charger often becomes worn because it is constantly being pulled and plugged in and out of the laptop and an electric outlet. Without the charger, you won't be able to use the laptop when the battery dies. Laptop battery charger repair can be done if you are adept in repairing computer parts.


Instructions


1. Shut down the computer and pull out the charger from the laptop and the electric outlet.


2. Plug the soldering iron in an electric outlet and turn it on. Allow it to reach 80 degrees Celsius (176 degrees Fahrenheit).


3. Remove the screws that hold the base of the computer to the chassis of the computer. Use a screwdriver to take out the screws. Mark each screw so you know exactly where to put them back.


4. Remove the laptop motherboard and carefully blow off any dust. Place the motherboard on an antistatic mat.


5. Look for the power jack, which is usually to be found at top right hand corner of the motherboard. It is a small, silver-color piece. Check if the soldering on the jack is broken or misaligned.


6. Place the de-soldering pump on the soldering and start removing all the old solder by holding the iron on the solder until it runs into the pump.


7. Detach the contacts from the jack on the motherboard by removing the old solder as you did in Step 6. Once all the solder is removed, gently remove the jack off from the motherboard.


8. Observe the receptacle on the circuit board that should be clearly visible with the jack out of the way. Remove any flux, debris or dirt around the receptacle using a small brush or a toothbrush.


9. Clean out the jack using a small eyeglass screwdriver or a tiny penknife. Solder the contacts using as little solder as possible.


10. Solder the input jack back on to the motherboard. Resolder any contacts you have unsoldered. When the solder is dry, re-assemble the computer base onto the chassis placing each screw right where it was removed.

Make Your Ipod Last Longer

Add a case to your iPod for added protection.


The first iPod was released by Apple in late 2001 and it was considered a major advance in portable music players at the time. The iPod is housed in an aluminum and steel case, which makes the device extremely durable. Still, iPods are not indestructible and require extra care to last a long time.


Instructions


1. Keep your iPod away from moisture at all times. The electrical components inside the iPod are not waterproof. A single drop of water could cause permanent damage. If you do find yourself with a wet iPod, turn it off and let it sit overnight in a bowl of dry rice. The rice is absorbent and will help remove moisture from the components, possibly restoring the device to its previous working condition.


2. Do not leave the iPod in direct sunlight for an extended time. The screen on the iPod is especially sensitive and can be easily damaged by heat. If you need to use a car charger on a sunny day, cover the device with a piece of fabric or newspaper to reduce exposure.


3. Extend the life of your battery by following Apple's recommendations. The batteries in the iPod are not user-serviceable, so the longer you maintain them, the longer your device will last. Lower the brightness to the middle or all the way down. If you have an iPod Touch, make sure "Auto-Brightness" is enabled. Change the Screen Lock setting to turn off the screen after one minute of inactivity. Switch off the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use, as they will drain the battery much faster.


4. Install a screen protector. The iPod's screen is tough but it can still be scratched if it encounters another hard surface. A screen protector covers the entire front of the iPod, without impeding the responsiveness of the touch-screen. A screen protector will not prevent the glass from breaking, but it will eliminate the possibility of scratches.


5. Put your iPod in a case or protective cover. Although the iPod screen is durable, the rear of the device scratches easily. If left unprotected, it will eventually look like it has been scratched repeatedly with a pin. Any type of case will do. A hard case offers more protection from a fall, while the rubberized cases make the iPod easier to hold.


6. Clean the iPod only with a mildly damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not attempt to clean it with rubbing alcohol, even if the iPod is extremely dirty. Using alcohol on an iPod Touch will cause the screen to degrade over time and lose its responsiveness.

Disadvantages of a Zoom Lens


Single-lens reflex cameras (SLRs) allow photographers to change the camera lens that is attached to suit the photographer's needs. Camera lenses fall into two categories: zoom lenses and prime lenses. Prime lenses have just one, fixed focal length while zoom lenses can be adjusted to cover a range of focal lengths. Though zoom lenses have the advantage of flexibility, they also have a number of disadvantages.


Image Quality


Prime lenses have slightly higher image quality than zoom lenses because the lens does not have to adjust as the focal length changes. According to Cambridge in Colour, even though the gap between zoom lens image quality and prime lens image quality has been closed significantly since zoom lenses were first offered, most less expensive primes can generate as high quality an image as a more expensive zoom lens.


Size


Zoom lenses are generally much larger and heavier than prime lenses. Even though zoom lenses offer additional versatility, their weight may prohibit them from being used if you have to carry around the camera around the entire day.


Small Aperture


Prime lenses are generally capable of a wider aperture than zoom lenses. Aperture refers to how much light the lens allows to reach the camera; the smaller the number the more light the camera lens is capable of allowing in. For example, many zoom lenses have a maximum aperture of only 3.5, and that quickly rises as you zoom in. To get a zoom lenses with an aperture of 2.8 through the entire focal length requires shelling out the cash--often $1,000 or more--for a luxury lens. Prime lenses can have aperture of 1.2, which allows much better pictures in dark spots or of action photos.

Canon Lenses

Canon has been making cameras since the launch of the Kwanon in 1936. That first camera came equipped with a Nikon lens, but shortly thereafter, Canon introduced its own line of lenses. Canon lens quality has led many professional photographers to choose Canon cameras as their primary equipment. Canon's current generation of lenses offers a wide array of options to the photographer.


EF Lenses


The current generation of Canon lenses are the EF lenses, which stands for "electro-focus." These lenses were introduced in 1987 on Canon film lenses. EF lenses have a motor in the lens body to help assist with focusing. EF lenses are compatible with all of the current generation of Canon digital SLRs.


Controls


Most Canon lenses have similar controls. They have a focus ring, which lets the photographer focus the lens manually, as well as a switch that lets the photographer choose autofocus or manual focus for the focus mode. Image-stabilized lenses allow the photographer to turn the stabilizer on or off as well as select different modes of stabilization for different modes of photography, one for normal use and one for panning. Zoom lenses have a zoom ring, which lets the photographer choose the zoom range. The lenses also have a focus distance switch that lets the photographer limit the focal distance, which can help reduce autofocus time.


EF-S Lenses


Canon introduced its EF-S mount in 2003 for some of its digital-style SLRs. EF-S lenses work on only some Canon cameras. The S stands for "short-back focus" and means the rear part of the lens is closer to the sensor, useful for digital SLRs that have smaller sensors, such as the Rebel. Canon's higher-end, full-frame SLRs such as the 5D do not accept EF-S style lenses, as the mount is slightly different. EF-S lenses have a different color mount dot--a white dot, instead of the red dot found on the EF lenses.


L-Series


L-series lenses are Canon's professional series of lenses. L-series lenses are identified by a red stripe around the lens barrel at the end of the lens. They have low-dispersion glass and other technologies to help control chromatic aberration. The lenses focus very quickly and often feature high aperture settings, usually down to f2.8, so they work well in low light. Many of the L-series lenses are white instead of black; Canon says this helps reduce heat buildup when the lenses are used in bright sunlight. They also have a non-rotating front element, which helps with the use of certain filters, such as circular polarizers. L-series lenses are made only with an EF mount, not an EF-S mount.


Focal Lengths


Canon makes a wide variety of focal lengths, including wide-angle lenses, super telephoto lenses, prime lenses, fisheye lenses, and teleconverters, which can be used to increase the focal length of L-series lenses. Many Canon lenses also have an ultrasonic motor, which helps increase focusing speed.

Mount A Bigscreen Tv On The Wall

A big-screen TV is designed to be incredibly thin, which allows you to mount it to a wall just like a picture. It saves you shelf space and allows you to enjoy the TV without having to allot extra square footage for placement. On the other hand, a big-screen TV is much heavier than a picture, which means you need to mount it carefully if you want it to stay on the wall.


Instructions


1. Find the studs in the wall with the stud finder and mark the location with a pencil or a piece of chalk. You want to make sure the location you choose has the strength and stability to hold your big-screen TV properly when you mount it.


2. Note the mounting location on the big-screen TV, and measure the wall surrounding the markings you have made. It's important that you both have room to place the TV correctly and can still watch it the way you want to regardless of where the supporting studs are. Keep an eye on glare from windows, reflections from lights and other elements which might detract from your enjoyment of the TV--it's far better to note them before you mount the TV than to discover it afterwards and go through the laborious process of re-mounting the TV.


3. Mount the first section of big-screen TV mount to the marked location on the wall, using lagscrews and a socket wrench to tighten it as securely as you can. The TV mount needs to be solid and secure, with enough strength to support the weight of the TV.


4. Tilt the big-screen TV on its side, taking care not to drop it or lower it too quickly. If your floor isn't carpeted, you may want to lay it down on some towels to keep it from getting nicked or scratched.


5. Unscrew the stand-up mount on the big-screen TV and remove it from the set. You won't need it once you mount the set to the wall.


6. Screw the second section of the big-screen TV mount to the appropriate location on the TV with a screwdriver. Double-check it to make sure the mounting is secure and solid. It should be solid enough to hold the weight of the set.


7. Lift the TV with the help of a strong friend and attach the two sections of the TV mount to each other. You really want to do this with two people or even three if you can.


8. Lock the TV mount in place.


9. Tug the TV mount gently to see if it is holding.


10. Wait 1 hour, and then check the TV mount again. It's not unusual for a mounting to seem secure at first, only to loosen or sag after a time if it hasn't been mounted properly.

Thirdparty Lenses That Are Compatible With The Canon A2

Third-party companies manufacture lenses to mount on the Canon A2.


Camera companies make more than just cameras. They make full lines of lenses designed specifically to work on the camera bodies that they manufacture. Canon is known for manufacturing some very good lenses that go with their line of digital and film cameras such as the EOS A2. The A2 is a semi-professional film camera body that was first brought to market in 1992. And while Canon has a number of lenses that work with the A2, there are a number of third-party lens manufacturers that also make lenses that work with the A2; they are often as good as Canon's and can be considerably less expensive.


Sigma


Sigma is a third-party lens manufacturer that produces lenses and a mount to go with Canon cameras. Founded nearly 50 years ago, Sigma continues to work on the quality of its lenses. Presently the company has over 50 lenses available, ranging from a fisheye lens, which is an extreme wide angle lens, all the way up to "Super Telephoto Lenses." Sigma has several lenses that will fit the Canon A2, from its 8mm lens all the way up to its 300mm to 800mm telephotos. If you are looking to build a kit using prime (non-zoom) lenses, their 24mm, 50mm and 85mm lenses are a great start for any photographer. The company also makes zoom lenses to fit the A2, with the 24-70mm and 70-200mm being two that would cover most photographers' needs. Sigma also produces teleconverters that will extend the focal length of a lens.


Tamron


Tamron produces lenses for film and digital SLRs, as well as lenses for closed-circuit TV security systems that are not designed for 35mm photography. Tamron company produces four categories of camera lenses including "All in One Zooms," a lens that covers focal lengths from 18mm to 270mm. This type of lens covers just about any shooting requirement. Tamron also makes "Fast Zooms," which have a shorter focal length but larger apertures, allowing more light in and thus giving the photographer an option to use a faster shutter speed, an option that may be needed for sports or wildlife. The company also has "Macro" and "Wide and Tele" lenses. When using third-party lenses, if you change the brand of camera you are using, you can still use your old lenses on your new camera, by simply buying the correct mounting bracket. All of these Tamron lenses can be used on the Canon A2 when they have the correct mounting bracket installed.


Tokina


Like the other two manufacturers, Tokina has a product line that includes zoom lenses as well as fixed focal length lenses, most of which are compatible with the A2. In the company's "AT-X Pro Series," photographers can select from both zoom and prime (non-zoom) lenses. The company also produces macro lenses in the 35mm and 100mm focal lengths. Since the A2 is a film camera, however, there are some Tokina lenses that will not work well with it, as they are specifically designed for digital cameras and their smaller sensors, commonly known as APS-C sensors. The AT-X 116 Pro DX (11mm to 16mm) is such a lens. In non-full frame digital cameras, the crop factor is usually 1.6x. This means that a 11mm lens on a cropped sensor DSLR has the equivalent film or full frame sensor focal length of 17.6mm. This lens, when mounted on a A2, would produce images in which the corners are rounded off, producing a non-full frame picture. The company's AT-X 124 Pro DX is also specifically designed for APS-C sensors and would not work on the A2.

Apps To An Ipod Touch

Apple Computer company creates the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Both of these devices have the ability to store music, calendar, notes and can access thousands of applications. One of the major attractions of the iPod Touch is having all of the features available as the iPhone does, the only difference is the iPod Touch does not have the ability to make phone calls. Apple iTunes has what is called the App Store, which is where users of Apple devices can purchase and download apps.


Instructions


Downloading wirelessly


1. Make sure your iPod Touch is connected to a WiFi network. If not, go to Settings, WiFi, then Choose a Network. You must be connected to a WiFi network to download apps wirelessly.


2. Go to the App Store on your iPod Touch by tapping on the icon. It comes defaulted to the front screen of the device.


3. Browse for an app that you would like to add to your iPod Touch. You can look at the Featured apps or the Top 25 apps if you are unsure what you would like to download. You may also browse by categories such as Games, Entertainment and Social Networking.


4. Tap on the app you would like to download.


5. Tap on the price, then tap "Buy Now" if it is a paid app. If is is free, just tap the word "Free" then "Download Now."


6. Enter your iTunes login and password, or create an account if you do not have one. Creating an account is easy and requires some basic personal information and payment information to use for your purchases. The app will then download to your iPod Touch.

Automobile audio technology has kept pace with in-home audio systems in terms of enhancements and quality. The JVC KD-S890 CD player combines flexibility with MP3 capability to give the listener high-quality sound at a reasonable price. This auto audio system is fairly easy to use even though it has a multitude of features, such as 18 FM and 6 AM station presets, plays all CD-R and CD-RW discs and has CD text and name recognition. It even has a detachable control panel that can be removed when the automobile is left unattended to discourage theft.


Instructions


1. Press the "Power" button (ON/ATT). Select "Tuner" with the "Select" button on the right hand side of the unit. Press the "FM1, FM2, FM3, AM" button to select a band. Use the "Select" button to select a station. Increase the volume by turning the "Volume" knob clockwise. Decrease the volume by turning the Volume knob counterclockwise.


2. Manually store preset radio station numbers in memory. Select "Tuner," and then select the "Band" desired (FM1, FM2, FM3, AM), then tune to the radio station desired. For example, FM station 100 on the FM1 band. Press "1" and hold it for at least 2 seconds to store the desired radio station into the FM1 band, Slot 1. You can store up 18 FM radio stations into the preset memory in this fashion. Store 1 station for each of the 6 buttons, 6 buttons per FM band and 3 FM bands. You can store 6 AM preset stations in the same manner.


3. Play a CD by inserting it into the loading slot. (If a CD is already in the loading slot, press "CD" to play it.) Press "0" to stop the CD play. Press and hold the upward arrow to fast forward the track, press and hold the downward arrow to reverse the track. Press the upward arrow briefly to move to the beginning of the next track, press the downward arrow briefly to move to the beginning of the current track. Pressing the downward arrow repeatedly will move to the beginning of each of the previous tracks.


4. Play an MP3 by inserting it into the loading slot. If an MP3 is already in the loading slot, press "CD" to play it. Press "0" to stop the MP3 play. Press and hold the upward arrow to fast forward the file, press and hold the downward arrow to reverse the file. Press the upward arrow briefly to move to the beginning of the next file, and press the downward arrow briefly to move to the beginning of the current file. Pressing the downward arrow repeatedly will move to the beginning of each of the previous files.


5. Set the clock by first pressing and holding the "Select" button for more than 2 seconds. Select "Clock H" from the display. Turn the "Select" knob to the desired hour. Select "Clock M" from the display. Turn the "Select" knob to the desired minutes. Press "DISP" (Display) to check the time.

Copy & Paste In Mobile 6 1

With the release of Windows Mobile 6.1, Microsoft gives mobile users with standard (non-touchscreen devices) the ability to copy and paste, a shortcut that before had been limited to pro (touchscreen) users. All Mobile 6.1 devices are able to copy relevant text and then paste that text into another blank space with only a few clicks and with relative ease. This shortcut saves time and ensures accuracy.


Instructions


Standard Devices (non-touchscreen)


1. Open the program that contains the relevant text you want to copy and paste.


2. Click the right soft key button, currently assigned to "Menu." Scroll down to the bottom of the menu and click "Copy/Paste." In the next menu that pops up, click "Select text."


3. Place the cursor at the start of the relevant text.


4. Click the left soft key button, currently assigned to "Select." When you move the cursor text will become highlighted. Continue to move the cursor until all of the relevant text is highlighted.


5. Click the left soft key button, currently assigned to "Copy."


6. Position the cursor where you want to paste the relevant text, either in this same program or in a separate program.


7. Click the right soft key button, currently assigned to "Menu." Scroll down and click "Copy/Paste." In the next menu that pops up, click "Paste."


Pro Devices (touchscreen)


8. Using the stylus or your finger, click at the start of the relevant text and select all of the relevant text.


9. Tap and hold anywhere within the highlighted text.


10. Click on "Copy" from the menu.


11. Position the cursor where you want to paste the relevant text, either in this same program or in a separate program.


12. Tap and hold again, and from the menu click "Paste."

Windows Mobile Standard Vs Windows Mobile Professional

Microsoft offers two different forms of its Windows Mobile software for each version of its currently released systems (for example, Windows 5.0, Windows 6.0 and Windows 6.1). The type of Windows Mobile OS you use (Professional or Standard) is based specifically on the type of phone you are using. Choosing which type of navigation and control you want over your phone will largely help determine which type of Windows Mobile platform you would like to use.


Touchscreen Vs. Non-Touchscreen


The Windows Mobile Professional operating system is used on touchscreen devices. The Windows Mobile Standard option is made specifically for non-touchscreen devices.


Navigation


Windows Mobile Professional offers larger on-screen icons that can be pressed with the user's stylus or finger to navigate among menus and applications. The Professional version's menus also tend to sit in a grid format, much like what you find on the iPhone. Smartphones use standard menus that are easier to navigate with using the phone's keypad and other directional arrows. Typically, the standard setup involves applications and menus placed in a vertical order so they can be easily scrolled through. Standard menus are meant for quick one-handed navigation, while Professional menus are meant for stylus and finger pressing so they must be bigger to make them easy to tap.


Software


Windows Mobile Professional applications will not run on Windows Mobile Standard operating systems. This incompatibility is created because certain games and applications require screen tapping or scrolling based on how they are programmed. Some Windows Mobile Professional and Standard applications however are developed with different controls as to work with both types of systems. Professional versions also tend to be slightly bigger in memory size because of their added functionality.


Enhanced Uses of Windows Professional


Windows Mobile Professional has added options that include cut, copy and paste functions; toolbar and paragraph options; and the ability to insert, modify and delete charts. Only Windows Mobile Professional is capable of using the remote desktop function.


Windows Mobile OS Commonalities


Both operating systems offer their own versions of Microsoft Office for Mobile, Internet Explorer Mobile, Microsoft ActiveSync, Windows Mobile Update, Windows Mobile Marketplace and Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile. Both operating systems can also support the same amount of memory (RAM and ROM), although touchscreen devices tend to offer larger amounts based on needs. Both operating systems can also handle fast processors, Bluetooth, GPS and other standard hardware settings. Essentially outside of a few differences, including the big difference of a touchscreen, most of the operating system functions remain unchanged.

Canon Powershot A700 User Guide

Basic Operation Guide


Canon releases both a basic and advanced user guide. Copy Data To An Sd Card

You can find SD card slots on a variety of devices, from cell phones and cameras to PCs and video game consoles. Secure Digital cards make transferring information to and from these devices simple. You can easily copy, transfer and save data to your SD card from your PC. Use the "Copy/Paste" feature to "Copy" data from your computer and "Paste" them onto your SD card.


Instructions


1. Navigate to the folder containing the data that you want to copy. Double-click on the folder name to open it. A new window will open, displaying the data in the folder.


2. Right-click on a file, and select "Copy" from the drop-down menu. If you wish to select more than one file at once, press and hold the "Shift" key on the keyboard, then click the files that you want to select. Release the "Shift" key, and right-click on any of the files. Select "Copy" from the down-down menu.


3. Insert the SD card into the SD card slot on the computer.


4. Wait as Windows recognizes the SD card. A "Removable Device" dialog will open. Select the "Open Folder to View Files" option. The SD card window will open.


5. Right-click in the SD card window, and select "Paste" from the drop-down menu. The data that you copied earlier will "Paste" into the SD card.

How Does Electricity Work

Three properties are involved when electric energy moves through a circuit.


There are three main properties that make electricity work: voltage, amps and resistance. These properties work together inside a circuit to allow electricity to move from place to place.


The process of electricity begins when an atom's electrons are stimulated and made to move in a current or flow. Some atoms hold their electrons close to the nucleus and some don't. The atoms that don't hold their electrons close are best at conducting an electrical current.


Materials like silver, gold, copper and aluminum are made up of these types of atoms, which is why most metals are good conductors of electricity. Materials like glass, air and plastic are called insulators; their electron makeup obstructs the flow of an electric current.


In order for electricity to flow in a current, there must be some sort of force or pressure pushing the electrons along. This force is called electromotive force or EMF. The more common term is voltage.


A circuit carries this electrical current. It is comprised of an electrical source, a load and two wires that carry the current between the source and the load. An example of an electrical source is a battery. The load could be a light bulb.


The electrical source must have a positive and negative terminal. The negative terminal is used to push the electrons along the circuit. The wire running from the negative terminal is routed to the load (light bulb), and then runs from the load back to the positive terminal on the source.


The amount of force applied by the source determines how much voltage goes through the circuit. The number of electrons that move through the circuit is called the amperage (current) or amps.


The last piece of the electricity puzzle has to do with the kind of resistance that is working against the electrical current. For example, if you were to use two large wires in your circuit, the current would flow faster than if you were to use two narrow wires. It's the same as when water flows through a pipe. The larger the pipe, the easier it is for the water to move through.


Another area in which resistance plays a part is when the current enters the load part of your circuit. In the case of a light bulb, the thin filament inside the bulb takes on the same amount of current as the wire. When the current moves through the filament, the electrons become more concentrated because they're moving through a smaller space. This small space intensifies the energy of the moving electrons, and it is this intense energy that lights the light bulb.


There are a million different uses for electricity. These three properties--voltage, amperage and resistance--can be applied in countless ways to any and every material that conducts and/or insulates electric current.

Difference Between Analog & Digital Lines

The greatest differences between digital and analog lines lie in the quality of the signal received and the volume of traffic that can be sent. Differences are basically the same for digital subscriber lines (DSL) into the home, television cable and high density cables running between cities connecting telephone switching offices. In all cases, the digital line outperforms the analog line to such a degree that soon there may be no analog lines left.


The Digital Difference


Basic Differences


An analog line is like a speaker cable, carrying audio information in a sine wave. The wave varies in frequency and amplitude to drive your speaker, which is simply a motor moving a piece of paper, to move the air exactly as did the voice or musical instrument that created the sound in the first place. A digital signal sends a code made up of "1's" and "0's," that only describes the signal as it was originally created. The receiving end decodes the "1's"and "0's" and creates a new signal equivalent to what was originally coded.


Example


If a singer performs into a microphone and the signal is amplified and sent across town on a wire before being amplified again through a speaker, that final sound could be highly distorted by the losses in the wire and the noise picked up along the way from AC power lines and radio interference. But if the signal were sent to the other end using a code, to be read by a second performer at the opposite end, the sound would be created anew and be much clearer. Thus is the ideology of digital technology. It is not sending the pure information susceptible to distortion. It sends codes, and as long as they can be recognized out of the noise, it recreates the signal anew


Subscriber Lines


Telephone subscriber wires that once carried only phone calls and fax signals into your home can now carry internet traffic and can support a hub in your home to operate several computers at the same time. All of this is due to digital technology. Literally billions (gigabytes) of "1's" and "0's" can be sent, received and distributed over the same lines that would have had a difficult time carrying two telephone conversations at the same time. The reason: far more digits can be sent and identified than waves.


Television Cable


The same technology also works for television cables. Your digital cable will not only carry far more channels, you will never see "snow" on your digital signal. "Snow" represents distortion or noise. But since code digits recreate your picture, no digit will create "snow." So even if your digital signal gets weak over a long distance of cable, it will still recreate a perfectly clear picture, down to the point where the signal is so weak that the picture breaks up and disappears.


Industrial Lines


Telephone lines between cities have the same noise, volume and quality improvements as subscriber lines and television cables, with the added advantage of being able to go farther distances. Repeaters can pick up weak signals at the end of a cable section and recreate them to be sent anew, whereas analog cables could only pick up the signal as it was received, noise and all, and amplify the whole mess. On an analog cable, after so many amplifications, the signal could be so distorted that it would be unusable.

Convert 8 mm Video to DVD


8mm video was a popular consumer format in the late 1980s and 1990s used for shooting non-professional footage. With the advent of digital formats such as mini-DV, 8mm has become obsolete and working 8mm video decks are becoming scarce. Further, the 8mm is a fragile medium with a limited shelf life. For that reason, transferring 8mm video to a popular and accessible format like DVD has become a highly desirable option.


Instructions


1. Obtain a Digital 8 video camcorder. It will be able to play all formats of 8mm video (Video 8, Hi8, and Digital 8) and has built-in noise reduction and time-base correctors for stabilizing analog video. Besides providing better image quality, a Digital 8 camcorder will be able to connect directly to your computer, eliminating the need to purchase an analog-to-video conversion box.


2. Using your Digital 8 camera, take a look at the 8mm cassette you plan to convert to DVD. If you are looking for specific footage that was shot decades ago, you may need to scan a few tapes unless they are meticulously labeled.


3. Hook up your Digital 8 camcorder to your computer via the FireWire port.


4. Acquire software that captures video. Most video-editing applications such as Final Cut Pro, Vegas, and PowerDirector have a module for capturing footage from an external video camera. They will automatically detect your camera via FireWire when you launch the application.


5. Following the instructions of your chosen software, capture the desired footage from your 8mm cassette. Unlike older analog cameras, many Digtal 8 camcorders allow you to control playback of cassettes directly from your computer so you will be able to scan footage without manually operating the controls on the camera itself.


6. After capturing the desired footage, save it to a digital file on your hard drive. If possible, save the file in MPEG-2 format which is ideal for DVD.


7. Purchase blank DVD-R's. They are for sale at most computer and office supply stores. Be sure to spend a little extra on high-quality, name-brand discs. Cheap DVD-R's can degrade rapidly and freeze during playback.


8. Obtain DVD video burning software. Mac users most often use Toast or Burn. PC users can use Nero, Roxio Creator, or Cyberlink DVD Suite.


9. Consult the instructions of your chosen application and burn the digital file to DVD. In order to minimize the odds of an unsuccessful burn, be sure to choose the slowest write speed and do not use other applications during the burning process.


10. Test out your "burnt" DVD-R on a DVD player. If it works, repeat above steps as needed.

Activate A Tomtom Map

Most TomTom global positioning system (GPS) units come pre-installed with maps of the United States. Some higher end devices will even come with maps of Canada and Mexico installed. Users may find the need to upgrade maps or install additional countries or continents. Activating a map is a relatively easy process.


Instructions


1. Connect the TomTom device to the computer with the USB cable. Switch the power of the device on and allow it to power up. The device will show an alert message that it has been hooked to the computer, and it will show up on the computer as a connected device.


2. Start TomTom Home. The software should start when the device is recognized by the PC, but may need to be started manually. On either computer format, simply double-click the software's icon.


3. Log in to your TomTom account. In order to purchase, store or activate a map, you have to be logged into your TomTom account. Users will receive log-in information upon registering their unit. On the TomTom Home's first screen, click the button to log in. On that screen, users will be prompted to enter their user name and password.


4. Receive automatic activation. TomTom devices should automatically detect new maps installed on the device or downloaded from TomTom. If it does not, the map will need to be manually activated.


5. Manually activate the map. If TomTom Home shows a prompt to manually activate the map, find the device code and product code for the device. Product codes are 15-character combinations printed on the product card inside of the original packaging.


Device codes are software-based codes generated on the device. With the device unplugged from the computer and in driving mode, press the bottom right corner of the screen. This will take the user to an information screen, which displays the map version in the bottom right corner. Press the version button. The version screen will display the 10-character device code.


With these two codes in hand, go to the TomTom activation website (see Resources below) and enter the two codes. TomTom will provide a unique activation code.


When attempting to activate the map in TomTom Home, the software will prompt the user to enter the activation code. At this point, enter the code generated by the activation website.

Lighting


1. Make sure your target is under the best and brightest light possible. Camera phones do not always capture subjects clearly in the dark. If your target isn't well-lighted, your video may come out too dark.


2. Avoid pointing light into your camera phone's lens. If the subject is too bright, your camera phone may not capture clear images.


3. Use the flash and contrast options on your camera phone as necessary.


Audio


4. Avoid windy filming conditions. Wind can drown out your intended audio target. Excessive movement also creates this effect.


5. Capture video in areas with limited background noise. Avoid crowded public areas.


6. Use a miniature external microphone if your camera phone does not provide adequate sound quality. Keep the microphone protected and as close to your subject as possible.


Operation


7. Keep a steady hand. Video may not capture clearly if the camera phone is moving. Make sure the camera is as still as possible.


8. Be mindful not to cover any opening intended for audio or video reception. Sound may not record properly if you are obstructing the microphone. Video may not capture properly if you obstruct the lens.


9. Thoroughly investigate the software function and capabilities of your camera phone before attempting to record. You could easily delete or destroy your video with the push of a button if you do not know use the capture function or software properly.

Remove The Front Lens On An Element Pentax 6x7 90mm 2 8 Lens

Trade out the lens on your Pentax camera.


The Pentax 6X7 is a film based camera that comes with a standard 90mm 2.8 lens. This lens gives you the same focal point as the human eye. However, while using the Pentax 6X7 camera it is often necessary to change out the lens to either increase the zoom, switch the focal point or capture a wider viewing area. Thankfully the Pentax 6X7 lens is removable so you shouldn't have a problem switching in a new lens.


Instructions


1. Press down on the lens release button located next to the camera lens. This unlocks the camera lens from the camera itself. Make sure you have a hand on both lens and camera to prevent it from falling to the ground.


2. Twist the lens to the left slowly. Eventually the lens unscrews right off of the Pentax 6X7. Place the lens in a safe location to prevent any dirt from collecting on the lens glass.


3. Attach the new, replacement lens onto the camera and turn it to the right. Eventually the lens locks into place. You hear a slight click when this occurs.


4. Repeat this process every time you need to change out a lens on the Pentax 6X7 camera.

Set the Aperture on a Digital Canon Rebel


The Canon Rebel is a digital single-lens reflex camera that allows users to take photographs based on the size of the lens aperture. You can set the aperture to allow a little or a lot of light into the camera, which gives you the ability to capture both long and short depths of field, and any in between. Setting the aperture on the Rebel can be done in a few quick steps so photographers can catch that great photo.


Instructions


1. Turn the camera on. This will allow you to see the aperture information on the top LCD panel.


2. Turn the mode dial on the top of the camera to "Av." This is the aperture setting.


3. Rotate the main dial, which is a vertical-style dial on top of the camera behind the shutter button. Turning this dial to the left or right will increase or decrease the aperture size by f-numbers, or "f-stops." The aperture readout (or f-stop setting) will display in the top LCD panel and will change as you rotate the dial.


4. Select the aperture setting you desire for the picture. Remember that a larger aperture (lower f-stop number) will let in more light and give the photo a decreased depth of field. A higher f-stop will close the aperture and create a longer depth of field.

Repair A Coaxial Cable

If your coax cable is damaged, there are some steps you can take to repair the damaged cable rather then changing the whole line. This will save you time and money, because a repair is less expensive then a new coax line. After the line is repaired there should be no difference noticed in signal strength for the TV. If you do notice a signal-strength loss and have followed all the proper steps for repair, then you will need to change the line because the line is damaged beyond repair.


Instructions


1. Paint on liquid electrical tape if the insulation covering is damaged but the line is intact. When dry, it will create a new insulation barrier.


2. Cut the damaged area of the wire out if the coaxial cable has been cut into. You will need some slack wire to pull.


3. Twist the new ends onto each wire end that you just cut back. Strip back 1/2 of the outer black insulation leaving the silver braided wire to fold over as you twist on the end. Strip 1/2 of the inner insulation to expose the copper wire in the middle. Turn the ends clockwise to screw them on.


4. Join the two ends together with the coax joiner.


5. If the end of the coaxial cable where it screws into your TV is damaged, put on a new end. Cut off the old end and twist on a new one by simply turning the new end clockwise.

Take A Portrait With A Shallow Depth Of Field

A shallow depth of field keeps the subject in sharp focus while throwing the background out of focus. Using this technique emphasizes the subject of the portrait over the environment in which the portrait was taken.


Instructions


1. Set the camera in Aperture Priority mode.


2. Set the camera's aperture to the largest size. Common largest apertures range from f/1.8 to f/3.5.


3. Zoom the lens to the longest telephoto position. The depth of field effect is enhanced by longer distances from your subject.


4. Frame your subject's face in the viewfinder. Move toward the subject if her face is too small. Move away from your subject if the subject is too large in the viewfinder.


5. If your camera supports a single focus point, focus on the subject's closest eye, then re-frame the photograph to include the subject's face. This will keep the closest eye sharp, while allowing other facial features to blur with the shallow depth of field.


6. Press the shutter button to take the picture.

1. Start on the home screen. Roll the trackwheel to the Tools icon. Click the trackwheel, pulling up the Tools screen. Roll the trackwheel to the Settings icon. Click the trackwheel, pulling up the Settings screen.


2. Scroll down until ‘Screen/Keyboard’ is highlighted. Click the trackwheel to select that option. The Screen/Keyboard screen opens. The first choice that is highlighted on that screen is ‘Font Family.’ Click the trackwheel. A menu box opens. Click the trackwheel to select ‘Change Option.’ A menu box appears.


3. Scroll down the list of fonts to the one you want. Unlike word processing programs, this does page does not show what the fonts look like as you scroll over the names. However, if you look to the side of the menu box, you will see a sample sentence, “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,” changing as you scroll across the various fonts. Click the trackwheel to select the font you would like; this also closes the menu box.


4. Roll the trackwheel until ‘Font Size’ is highlighted. Click the trackwheel. A menu box opens. Click the trackwheel to select ‘Change Option.’ A menu box appears. Scroll to adjust the size of the font; you will see the sample sentence changing as you scroll across the font sizes. Click the trackwheel to select the size you like; this also closes the menu box.


5. Roll the trackwheel until ‘Font Style’ is highlighted. Click the trackwheel and follow the same steps to select ‘Plain,’ ‘Bold,’ ‘Extra Bold,’ ‘Bold Italic,’ or ‘Italic.’


6. Roll the trackwheel until ‘Antialias Mode,’ is highlighted. Antialias is a process that smoothes out the fonts, making them look nicer. Supposedly it slows down the Blackberry 7100t a bit, but not noticeably. If you want to try it, click the trackwheel to select ‘Change Option.’ A menu box appears. Scroll to and click the trackwheel to select ‘Antialising. ’ Click the trackwheel again; a small menu box opens. Scroll to and click, ‘Save’ to save all the changes.

Car Battery Facts

A car battery is one of the components necessary to make a car turn on and function. The size and design of the battery needed for a vehicle depends upon the engine specifications for the vehicle. For example, a battery that fits on an U.S. made SUV will probably not work on a foreign compact car.


Types


There are two types of car batteries. An SLI battery powers the starter, lights and ignition. A traction battery is the power source for an electric vehicle.


Storage


A battery that must be stored should be fully charged and free of corrosion. Additionally, it must be checked and recharged periodically to prevent loss of power.


Recycling


Because most car batteries are lead acid based, recycling them is a must. In an effort to encourage recycling, a deposit is charged when purchasing a new battery. This charge is usually refunded when the old battery is returned to the store.


Maintenance


Battery posts must be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent corrosion. To do this, you must take the battery cables off the battery and wipe the posts off with a clean towel.


Charging


Under normal working conditions, the battery is recharged automatically by the alternator. In the case of a malfunctioning alternator or severely drained battery, external battery chargers may be needed.

What Happens When A Gophone Expires

It's important to check your GoPhone's balance and expiration date to keep your phone active.


The AT&T GoPhone is a prepaid cellular phone that uses funds from a phone card, from your credit/debit card or bank account. Each phone card or refill package you purchase for your GoPhone contains an expiration date -- a $15 card expires after 30 days, a $25, $50, or $75 dollar card after 90 days and a $100 card expires after one year. If you don't load funds before the expiration date, your GoPhone is shut off within 60 days.


Expiration


When a GoPhone expires, you're no longer able to make calls on the phone, nor can you access the voice mail system, send text messages and access the AT&T Media Net network. If you're within your GoPhone's 60-day grace period, you can add funds to the phone to keep it active. To check to see if you are within the grace period, dial "611" on your phone's keypad and press "Send." You will receive your current balance and expiration date via a computerized system then add 60 days to that expiration date. You can also find the expiration date of your last AT&T GoPhone phone card or refill package and add 60 days to that date.


After the Grace Period


If the 60-day grace period is over, your GoPhone's wireless number is no longer valid and the number is returned to AT&T's pool of available numbers. Your GoPhone account is also canceled and you won't be able to access account information on the AT&T GoPhone website.


Minutes


Any minutes that were on the phone after the account is canceled are now gone. You can't get a refund or transfer the minutes to another GoPhone. If you decide you want to reactivate your GoPhone, you can by calling AT&T at 800-331-0500 and speaking with a customer representative. Your new GoPhone service will have a new wireless number and you'll have to purchase a phone card or refill package to complete the reactivation process.


Checking Expiration Date


If your GoPhone is active, you can check your phone's balance and expiration date by dialing "*777#." A text message will appear with your funds balance and expiration date. You can also check your phone's balance online by navigating your computer's Internet browser to My GoPhone (paygonline.com) and logging in to your account with your phone number and personal identification number.

Connect A Firewire Camcorder To A Usb

It is possible to connect your video camera to a USB port on a comupter system.


FireWire is a connection port similar to USB. However, one side of the FireWire port is slightly curved with a "Y" icon printed next to it. The upside of FireWire over USB is the cable hookup provides a superior data transfer speed. However, not all computer systems have a FireWire port, so if you have a FireWire-only video camera, it is possible to hook up the camera system to a USB port on the computer.


Instructions


1. Insert the FireWire cable into the FireWire connection port on the video camcorder.


2. Insert the other end of the FireWire cable into the FireWire end of the adapter.


3. Connect the USB end of the adapter into a USB port on the computer system.


4. Power on the digital video camera and set it to "View" mode. The computer should detect the FireWire video camera

Operate An Ir Sensor

A remote control transmits the infra-red beam from the tip of the unit to the IR sensor.


An IR (infra-red) sensor is the electronic eye found on many devices that come with a remote control. The remote control transmits an infra-red beam, invisible to the human eye, across a fixed distance to the device, which follows the transmission instructions coded to each button on the remote control. For example, pressing "Pause" on a DVD player's remote control causes the motor to stop spinning the disc inside the DVD player, freezing the video image on your TV screen.


Instructions


1. Position the remote control within the manufacturer's recommended distance of the IR sensor for your electronic device. IR remote controls typically must be within 25-30 feet of the IR sensor for the beam to transmit a signal.


2. Point the tip of the remote control toward the round or rectangular black "eye" on the front of the component. This is the IR sensor.


3. Press the "Power" or "On/Off" button on the remote control, often in the upper left corner of the button array on the remote control.


4. Push one of the remote control buttons that correspond to the action you wish to accomplish, such as changing channels on a TV, pausing or skipping a chapter on a DVD, or adjusting volume.

Do not throw away battery backup units in a field or in the trash--the units are harmful to the environment.


Similar to automotive batteries, battery backup units contain acid and components that are corrosive and harmful to the environment if not dispose of properly. When the units are old or no longer working, you can't just drop the batteries in your home or business's trash receptacle where the unit will end up in a landfill. Fix The Speakers On A Tv

The sound of static coming out of your television speakers will quickly alert you that there is a problem you need to address. The first step is to troubleshoot your speakers through your television's audio menu. However, if that doesn't fix the speakers on a TV, you may need to open up the television and replace your television speakers.


Instructions


1. Unplug your television and lay it, screen down, on a soft surface such as on carpet or on a bed.


2. Remove the Phillips screws from the back of the television shell. Make sure you unscrew all of these screws before you try to open up the back of the television.


3. Pull the back cover off the television set. If you have a hard time pulling the cover off, you may have left a screw in place or internal wires may have snagged on the cover. Carefully remove them until you can take the cover off.


4. Replace the old speaker with a new speaker that matches the old speaker in impedance. For example, your replacement speaker should have the same ohms or volts as the old speaker does. You can find this information on the magnet on the speaker. Remove the old speaker, taking notes of how it was connected, and then install the new speaker the same way the old one attached to your television set.


5. Reset the television cover and replace the screws you previously removed.


6. Turn your television back up on its base, plug it in, and turn it on to listen to your new speakers.

What Does It Mean When A Film Has A Very Narrow Latitude Exposure

Exposure latitude is important for traditional film cameras.


Exposure latitude is the range of brightnesses that an emulsion can record while still maintaining detail. It is normally described in f-stops, which are the standard measures of camera apertures. For black and white art photography, the "zone system" of Ansel Adams is sometimes used to describe the tonal variations in an image.


Definition


Look around you on a sunny day. The eye can distinguish highlight details, such as wrinkles in a white shirt, and shadow details, such as the fur texture of a black cat in a shadow. No single photograph can manage that. Either the highlight details will "wash out" or the shadows will "block up". Exposure latitude is the difference within a single image between the brightest and darkest areas for which the film can record full detail.


Aperture


A diaphragm within the lens of a traditional camera is positioned to allow light to enter the camera and fall on the film when the camera shutter is opened. The size of this opening is called the "aperture" and is measured in a unit called "f-stops". The higher the f-stop, the smaller the aperture. F-stops are also used to describe exposure. If you set the camera to an average exposure and certain areas of the area you wish to photograph are more than three f-stops lighter or darker than that average, you will lose details in the image. Transparency films with very narrow exposure latitudes are unforgiving, in the sense that you will lose highlight or shadow detail if you miscalculate your exposure even slightly.


The Zone System


Ansel Adams' "Zone System" was originally designed for determining ideal exposures in black and white photography. It divided an image into 10 tonal zones, ranging from pure black, Zone I, through pure white, Zone X. Middle gray, which is the average tone of most outdoor scenes, is Zone V. Each zone differs from the next by one f-stop. Using a spot meter, determine the exposure of a middle grey object or a special "gray card" in the area you intend to shoot. That exposure becomes your Zone V. Next, meter other objects in the intended photographic field to see if they are within the exposure latitude of your film. If they are not, decide whether you wish to sacrifice highlight or shadow detail, and whether it might be possible to keep both by under or over-exposing by one or two stops.


Film Types


Slide films have a latitude of approximately five stops, digital SLRs six, color negative film about seven stops and black and white films up to eight. Generally, the higher the contrast of the film, the narrower the exposure latitude. Different brands and speeds of film vary in their abilities to maintain highlight and shadow detail within a given exposure latitude. Certain processing techniques can also affect exposure latitude or compensate for under or over-exposed film to some degree.

Troubleshoot a JVC Video Camera


Because JVC video cameras often include functions such as HD recording, fade in/fade out capabilities, LCD monitor viewing and varying shutter speeds for those cameras that have still photo capabilities, it can be difficult to understand what is causing the problem when the camera doesn't seem to work properly. A JVC video camera owner can go over a few things when troubleshooting a video camera to try to understand why a specific function or feature isn't working as expected.


Instructions


1. Replace the cassette tape if an error message appears that reads, "Tape End." This means the current tape is full. If you have a problem recording and the tape is new or not full, then check to make sure the cassette holder cover is completely closed. If it is open, close it and attempt to record again.


2. Connect the AC adapter securely to the wall, as well as to the camera if there is no power when attempting to turn on the camera. In some cases, the battery may be dead or not installed correctly. If you are not using a power cord and want to see if the battery is operational, take the battery out of the camcorder and replace it. Sometimes, the battery is not inserted completely into the right spot.


3. Adjust the position of the flip-out LCD monitor if the images on the monitor appear to be washed out or too dark. Changing the position of the monitor or of your head can bring a different view of the monitor.


4. Disconnect the AC adapter from the camera if you are hoping to see the status of your battery. If this does not work, turn the camera off and then back on again. The battery status icon should now appear in the corner of the LCD screen or viewfinder.


5. Remove the lens cap from the camera if the words "LENS CAP" flash on the screen. Because these words will only flash for five seconds after turning on the camera, make a habit out of checking for the lens cap any time that the LCD screen is dark and it appears that there is no video being recorded.

Indash Car Navigation Systems

In-dash car navigation systems are used to give directions from one place to another. Most units have other features Bluetooth capabilities and A/V jacks. Some vehicles come factory equipped with in-dash car navigation systems. Others are stand-alone and must be purchased separately. In either case, knowing important facts about the unit will help you to get the most use out of it.


Types


There are some in-dash navigation units that are solo units, meaning they consist of only the navigation system. More common are the multiple function units, which include a stereo, CD player and DVD player. As a safety feature, many of these restrict the use of the DVD player to times when the vehicle is stopped.


Installation


Installing an in-dash navigation system is best left to the professionals. These systems must be connected to a ground, a power source, the vehicle speed sensor and the parking brake. One special consideration for these units is that removing the entire dash and/or driver seat is necessary to install the hideaway box.


Size


The size of the in-dash car navigation system depends on the type of car you drive. Cars with single DIN slots or standard size slots will use a smaller in dash system that slides into the dash when not in use. The screen on these units is 6 1/2 to 7 inches. However, foreign cars and cars with double DIN slots, which are 4 inches tall, use navigation systems that sit flush into the dash. The screen on this type is 6 1/2 inches.


Benefits


In-dash car navigation systems feature real time traffic information. This information includes accident reports, traffic jams, road closings, road conditions and construction information. Many of these systems will recommend an alternate route when any of these obstacles are noted. The system may also provide you with directions to the nearest points of interest, including hotels and restaurants, if needed.


Considerations


Most units use a memory chip and processor. The bigger the memory, the more routes and music you can store in the unit. The faster the processor, the faster you will get route updates and other information necessary while driving. As of February 2009, a 2GB NAND flash memory is considered top of the line and a one second per pass processor speed is considered fast. The benefit to a large memory and fast processor is that if you store a route on disc and have to reroute your trip while driving, you won't have to reinsert the disc or pull over to wait for directions.
