Make Your Own Lensbaby Lens Blur Effects

Getting a Lensbaby selective blurring effect can be done without a Lensbaby.

The Lensbaby is a flexible lens that can be twisted and bent to produce selective focus. The effect, for example, can make a rose on one side of the image frame appear in sharp focus while the other roses on the other side of the frame can blur to a soft background image. Using your fingers, you can make the Lensbaby go in and out of focus at nearly any point around the frame, while the other part creates the opposite effect.

Instructions

1. Select your subject, whether it is a person, a rose or something else. Take a look at the various angles at which you can shoot the person or the object. Determine your basic composition and decide what part of the image you would like to blur.

2. Set your camera up on a tripod with whichever type of lens you choose. You can use a standard or normal lens of 50mm or, to add to the Lensbaby effect, you can use a short telephoto or portrait lens of 75mm or 80mm. The longer the telephoto lens, the shorter the range of items or people will be in focus.

3. Look through the viewfinder and place one of the scarves over part of the lens. This will give you a soft, diffused portion of the image while leaving the other part in focus. Do not worry about the line where the scarf ends. If you place it directly on the front of the lens, the sharpness of that edge will appear minimally. You can fix it in a photo editing software package if it becomes too distracting.

4. Use petroleum jelly on the front of the lens to get a soft, blurred effect. Bob Guccione became famous for this technique. However, it is a better idea to have a skylight or ultraviolet filter to protect the actual front element of the lens from the petroleum jelly. It is easier to clean a filter than a lens, and if you cannot get it completely off, it is less expensive to replace a filter than a lens.

5. Work with the image in the photo editing software to enhance the Lensbaby effect. In fact, you can achieve the Lensbaby effect entirely in photo editing software without the use of a lens. You actually will have more control over the image there. If you have shot effects with scarves or petroleum jelly, however, you can smooth out the image and hone the effect better in the software.

Change The Sim Card In An Iphone 4g

SIM cards hold your contacts, call log and message information.

If your iPhone 4's SIM card breaks, you must replace it with a new card if you want to use your phone. AT&T sells SIM cards you can activate through its customer service department, then install in your phone. The only times you should replace your SIM card are when it is physically broken, or when you get constant errors while trying to view information on the phone that is stored on the SIM.

Instructions

1. Extend one side of the paperclip so it sticks out.

2. Use the open side of the paperclip to press the small indentation on the SIM card tray on the right side of the phone. The card tray will pop out.

3. Remove the SIM card from the tray and place the new one in the tray.

4. Push the tray back into the phone until it clicks in place.

Install An Fm Modulator In A Car

If you own a portable media device (such as an iPod, Zune or smartphone), you know that the notion of listening to music in your vehicle via the device can be very attractive. Luckily, there is a way you can listen to music through your car stereo via your media device as you drive your vehicle: Use an FM modulator.

Instructions

1. Remove the faceplate of your stereo unit (refer to your stereo unit's manual if you do not know do this). Using your screwdriver, remove the cradle screws that hold your stereo unit in place. After you have removed the screws, pull the stereo unit out of its compartment.

2. Examine the wiring diagram in your vehicle's owner's manual and your stereo unit's owner's manual to find the ground and hot wires. After you have found them, tape the ground wire of your FM modulator to the antenna-wire housing (the metal connector outside the antenna wire).

3. Splice the hot wire that you found inside your vehicle; use your wire cutters to accomplish this. Peel back the plastic coating until approximately half an inch of wire is exposed.

4. Splice the hot wires of your FM modulator. (If you cannot find the hot wires, refer to the modulator's owner's manual.) Reveal approximately half an inch of wire and twist it into the exposed section of your vehicle's hot wire. After this is accomplished, wrap the twisted wire with electrical tape.

5. Set the radio frequency at which you want to listen to your music. Normally, there are three sets of radio frequencies that the modulator will pick up; however, some FM modulators will pick up any FM station to which you set it.

6. Insert the wiring harness and modulator into your vehicle's dashboard. Screw the stereo unit back into your vehicle using the cradle screws and pop the faceplate back onto the front of your stereo unit. Plug your portable media device into the FM modulator via the included cord and turn on your device. Set the radio to the frequency you chose; you are now able to listen to whatever is on your portable media device through your car stereo.

Change Phone Service

Sometimes it feels like you are controlled by the cell phone service that you have. When it comes time to change, it may seem like a daunting task. Many times you are locked into a contract for multiple years. Doing research on all your options is the best way to make the most informed decision. Follow a few helpful suggestions and you can have the service that you want and need.

Service

Decide which service in your area has the features and plans that are best suited to your needs. Think about the following questions: Do you need a lot of minutes? Do you text often? Do you need a data plan to check email or surf the web? Research plans that cover the way that you need to use your phone. If you text frequently, look for unlimited text plans. If you use your phone for almost everything, look for unlimited phone, text and data plans.

Phone

Once you decide which new service is right for you, look at their phones. Some phone manufacturers produce the same phone more many service providers, so it may be an option to keep your existing phone. If not, look for features that you would want and also look at promotions. Cell phone providers are always having sales on new phones and discounts on old models.

Old Number

If you pick a new service and new phone, you'll have to decide if you want to keep your old number. Cell phone companies now give you the option to have your old number routed to a new line of service (many times at no charge). This may take a few hours to a day to complete, so you may have to bounce between old phone and new phone for the first day.

Cancelling

Now that you have a new phone, it's time to call your old service and cancel. If you have a contract, if it has not been met you may be charged certain early termination fees. These can range anywhere between 100 to 300 dollars. If you have your old number routed, your old service will be automatically canceled.

Tips

Make sure to back up your contacts and any other information from your old phone. Sometimes you are able to have this information transferred, but it's better to be safe than sorry!

Troubleshoot A Tom Tom Gps

TomTom GPS systems provide reliable navigation combined with helpful features like voice guided turn-by-turn direction and a point of interest database. Though TomTom GPS units generally receive favorable user reviews, the following solutions address some of the most reported problems with TomTom GPS devices.

Instructions

1. Reset your TomTom GPS receiver. Some TomTom users report occasional difficulty in getting their TomTom navigation device to start or respond to commands. If this happens to you, remedy the problem by performing a soft reset on your TomTom GPS. A soft reset will reset the data on your TomTom GPS receiver without erasing any data. To reset a TomTom GPS receiver, press and hold the "On/Off" button for 15 seconds or until the device restarts.

2. Let your TomTom GPS acquire the necessary satellite signals outside. If the device has trouble connecting to the satellite signals necessary for its operation, try an easy fix to the problem. Take your TomTom GPS receiver outside, away from mountains, tall buildings or heavy foliage, where the receiver has a clear view of the sky. Wait for a few moments while the device acquires the necessary satellite signals.

3. Install the latest version of TomTom Home on your computer. If your TomTom GPS receiver freezes or begins looping at the starting screen, the TomTom application may not be installed properly. Solve this problem by removing the current Home application and reinstalling the latest Home application. Perform a reset on your device as described in Step 1. Connect your TomTom GPS to your computer using a USB cable. Turn on the GPS. Run the TomTom Home program, then click "Manage My Device." From the Applications menu, click on the appropriate application, then choose "Remove Items From Device." You will be asked if you want to copy the removed file. Choose "Don't Copy." After the application is removed, click "Done" to complete. Download and install the latest version of the TomTom Home application software from the Service section of the TomTom website.

4. Change the language settings on your TomTom GPS device. If your TomTom GPS receiver is set to the wrong language, change the current language to the language of your choice. Perform a reset on the device as described in Step 1. When your GPS unit turns back on, tap the button in the lower right corner of the screen to continue. Tap the next screen to access the GPS receiver's main menu. Tap on the wrench icon to access the "Change Preferences" setting screen. Scroll through the "Change Preferences" screens until you see the "Change Language" icon, identified by three flags. Tap the "Change Language" icon and choose your desired language from the list. Depending on which language you chose, you may be asked to choose a new voice for turn-by-turn navigation.

5. Check the sound preference settings on your TomTom GPS. If your device is operating without sound, resetting the TomTom GPS as described in Step 1. When the device restarts you should hear the TomTom drum sound. If not, access the "Change Preferences" menu to check if the sound is turned on. If the sound is turned on and still no sound is coming from the device, select "Volume Preferences" from the "Change Preferences" menu and adjust the volume to your liking. If none of these solutions solves the problem, uninstall your current version of TomTom Home and download and install the new version as described in Step 3.

Will My K1000 Lenses Fit A Pentax Digital

You can use lenses you used on your Pentax K1000 on Pentax DSLR's.

One the great features about using Pentax Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) systems is that you can use old manual focus lenses that you would have used on the legendary Pentax K1000. Not only can you use old manual focus lenses, you can also still benefit from Pentax's "Anti-Shake" program as it is part of the camera body as opposed to being part of the lenses as it is with some other manufacturers. When you are attaching an older lens to your modern Pentax DSLR there are a couple of settings you will need to change.

Attaching the Lens

Attach your old K1000 lens by lining up the guide dot on the outside of the lens to match the guide dot on the camera mounting ring. Place the lens against the camera body and rotate the lens until it clicks into place.

Using Manual Settings

Switch the "AF/MF" switch located on the front of the camera to "MF" for manual focusing. DSLR's do not have focusing screens like the K1000 does. However you will know your lens is focused correctly as the center focusing point will illuminate and the focus indicator light along the bottom of the viewfinder will also be lit.

Setting Aperture

Press the menu button located on the back of your Pentax DSLR and toggle through the menus until you reach "Using Aperture Ring" press the "OK" button. Change the value in this menu from "Prohibited" to "Permitted" and press the "OK" button to save your selection.

Meter

Turn the exposure mode ring located on the top left of your Pentax DSLR to either "M" for manual or "Av" for aperture priority. Use the aperture ring on the lens to select the aperture you want to use. Press the green button just beside the shutter release to stop down the lens and activate the metering mode when using older lenses.

Take a Picture

Turn the focusing ring on the lens until your subject is in focus and press the shutter release button to take the picture.

Troubleshoot A Sony Dsct1 Digital Camera

Sony released its Cyber-shot model DSC-T1 digital camera in 2003. Its features include a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, a 3x optical zoom, an f-stop range of 3.5 to 4.4, automatic exposure control, six white balance options ("Automatic," "Daylight," "Cloudy," "Flourescent," "Incandescent" and "Flash"), and an LCD panel of 960 by 220 dots per inch. The Cyber-shot weighs 6.3 oz (including battery pack) and measures 3.58 inches in width, 2.36 inches in height and 0.82 inches in depth.

Instructions

1. Solve your battery charging problems by first turning off the camera. If the camera is turned on, the battery is unable to charge. If that doesn't work, open the battery cover and reseat the battery pack, making sure the polarity is aligned.

2. Correct your camera's inability to turn on by choosing one of several solutions: reinstall the battery pack (an incorrectly installed battery pack will hinder the camera's ability to turn on), connect the AC power cord to the phone (the phone may be incapable of turning on due to a dead battery), replace a completely dead battery pack with a brand new one or resettle the camera into the USB cradle.

3. Stop your camera's random power outages by trying to turn on the camera (the camera turns off automatically after three minutes of inactivity). Install a charged battery pack into the camera, or set it in the USB cradle, if the power still won't turn on.

4. If you can't get your image to focus, turn the camera function to "Macro" and move the lens back a bit from the subject. If that doesn't solve the problem, find "Camera" in the menu and select the "Zoom" tool (magnifying glass icon). The problem could also be that the "Zoom" tool is activated when you don't need it. Go to "Camera" in the menu and deselect "Zoom."

5. Check that your flash is working by setting the function to "Camera." The flash won't fire in any other mode. Try, also, to set the flash mode to "Auto," "Forced Flash" or "Slow Synchro," as the mode may be set to "No Flash," causing it not to fire.

The Advantages & Disadvantages Of Videosharing Websites

Posting video to video-sharing sites can be fun, but be aware of pitfalls.

Video-sharing sites let users upload video to public websites. This gives people an opportunity to showcase their work, but it also creates the potential for people to observe others' private lives. Online videos can help or hurt current and future employment and influence others' opinions about you. Prior to posting an online video, think about whether or not it contains content you would want the entire world to watch. If it doesn't, don't post it.

Privacy

Once a video is posted to a sharing site, it is no longer private. It's never wise to post a video that depicts friends or strangers without their consent. Even when you only send a video link to friends, they can still share or re-post it. Many companies offer programs that let people pull or rip content, even if it's protected. This makes it difficult to entirely remove posted videos from the Internet and further exacerbates privacy concerns.

Exposure

Video-sharing websites grant enormous levels of exposure. This offers benefits to advertisers and marketers, independent filmmakers and other professionals looking to showcase work. They also provide exposure to people who aspire to be in the spotlight by broadcasting their talents and opinions to the world. Uploading and sharing videos is easy, and if people like a clip, it is easy for them to pass it along to others. However, there is the risk of low-quality or inaccurate content being posted. People also risk believing that erroneous information in a video is factual, because there is no need to make sure information is accurate.

Socializing

Video sharing lets individuals connect with one another and share their experiences. By sharing videos that portray common interests, people can bond, socialize and make new friends who share common interests. When individuals post videos of events they attended or places they visited, it allows them to share these experiences with others. Videos can also offer assistance with performing certain tasks or provide information that people seek. However, marketers have caught on to this trend and often create advertisements that seem like entertaining videos, but are actually disguised ads.

Piracy

Piracy has become a significant problem with video-sharing sites. It's estimated the film industry alone loses $3 billion a year in revenue because of piracy. Although the creators of the video can take the content down, this often happens after thousands of people have watched and potentially downloaded the video. Although many people watching and downloading videos are consumers, others run entire businesses based on stolen content. This lost revenue can actually increase costs for those paying for content and hurt entertainers and professionals who earn royalties based on sales.

Longevity

Once you put a video on a sharing site, it may stick around for years to come. Even if you delete a video, people may have already copied it, distributed it to friends or re-posted it to other sites. Although you can take legal action to force sites to take down content, this could be a lengthy process. In the meantime, many more individuals may have viewed content that was never intended to be viewed by the public.

Install Pressure Connectors On A Coax Cable

Coax cable typically connects to television sets and similar devices. It uses two leads to conduct the signals to the device. The first lead is a solid copper core in the center of the cable and the second lead is a braided copper mesh. An inner sheath insulates the copper core from the copper mesh and an outer sheath covers the copper braiding. Installing connectors on the end of a coax cable generally involves applying pressure around the connector to crimp it to the cable.

Instructions

1. Cut the end of the coax cable at a 90-degree angle to the cable with the cable stripper. Remove the last 1/2 inch of the outer sheath from the cable without cutting the copper braiding.

2. Strip the last 1/4 inch of the inner sheath and copper braiding with the cable stripper without damaging the inner copper wire. This will expose 1/4 inch of the inner copper core. Trim the end of the copper core at a 45-degree angle to maximize the contact between the core and the outlet on the television device.

3. Pull the exposed copper braiding on the end of the coax cable back so that it lies on top of the outer sheath. Squeeze the braiding along the outer sheath to remove the slack.

4. Hold the cable in one hand and the connector in the other hand so that the connector's inner side faces the cable. Place the end of the inner copper into the hole through the center of the connector.

5. Push the cable onto the connector as far as possible so that the end of the inner sheath touches the inner face of the connector. This requires you to twist the connector back and forth to get it over the copper braiding.

6. Place the coax cable connector into the matching socket on the cable crimper. Close the handles of the cable crimper with firm pressure to crimp the connector around the cable. Pull the connector away from the cable to ensure it does not slip off the cable.

Use A Minolta Maxxum 7000

Unlike digital cameras, the Maxxum 7000 shoots photos with film.

Minolta offers the Maxxum 7000 as a professional quality film camera which features auto focus as well as a LCD screen that provides information regarding the different camera shooting modes. The Minolta Maxxum 7000 runs off of four AAA batteries. The Maxxum 7000 also features a removable lens which helps to focus when shooting close ups. Opening the film cartridge in the middle of a roll of film can overexpose the film and ruin the photos.

Instructions

1. Loosen the battery cartridge, located to the left of the lens on the outer edge, with the side of a small coin. Move the coin in a counterclockwise direction. Pull out the battery holder. Insert four AAA batteries into the battery holder. Insert the loaded battery holder back into the Maxxum 7000. Tighten the battery holder screw with the edge of the coin.

2. Turn the switch located on the back of the camera to the On setting. Press the button in the middle of the back cover and slide the release down to open the cover. Insert the film cartridge into the film compartment located on the left.

3. Pull the tip of the film just past the red indicator. Connect the edge of the film to the metal teeth located on the right. Close the back cover of the Maxxum 7000. Check the LCD screen to confirm the bottom left hand Film display shows a number one.

4. Hold the camera steady while looking through the eye hole of the Minolta Maxxum 7000. Hold the camera horizontally and vertically to test the framing options before shooting the photo. Center the subject of the photo and slowly press the operating button, located to the top left of the camera lens, to shoot a photo.

5. Locate the Rewind button directly to the right of the eye hole. Press down on the rewind button and slide it to the left after the camera beeps to indicate it has used the last frame of the film.

6. Press the button in the middle of the back cover and slide the release down when the LCD screen shows a zero under the Film display. Open the back cover of the Minolta 7000. Remove the film cartridge from the film compartment.

Philips Tv Repair Tips

Philips is a trusted name in consumer televisions, and their products are known for their reliability and excellent performance. However, as with any electronic device, Philips televisions can be susceptible to problems over time, due to the fault of the consumer or via manufacturing defects. Whether you own a projection television or a new flat-panel model, these repair tips should get your TV running in top performance once again.

Flat-Panel Issues

One of the most common issues owners of flat-panel televisions experience is a set that will turn on and produce sound without a picture. Often, this is due to the TV's settings. Using your remote control, change the input settings to a variety of devices. If the selected input corresponds to a gaming console or video player, be sure that the external unit is powered on and is producing video. Some DVD players will have an audio-only mode, so be sure to deselect that option.

If doing this doesn't produce a result, check the TV's cabling. HDMI and S-Video cables can become loose over time, or accidentally pulled out. Chances are good that the audio cable will still be seated while the video cable may have come loose. Disconnect all cables and reseat them firmly. It's possible that the cables themselves have deteriorated, so try swapping in other cables before you decide the problem is stemming from the TV.

The problem may be that your TV's power supply has gone dead. This is a repair that you'll likely be unable to perform yourself. If the television is still within its warranty, contact the point of sale and ask for a repair or replacement. Otherwise, contact a local authorized repair shop.

Projection Issues

Although flat-panel televisions currently dominate the market, you may own a projection television. The most common problem with these types of sets is a convergence chip failure. This will present itself as image distortion, such as incorrect colors, blurring or a blue arc on the screen. Test your convergence chips by going into your Menu settings and adjusting the colors. If the colors can't be made accurate, or if they can't be adjusted at all, you'll have to replace the convergence chips. The cost of this repair will depend on your particular Philips television. Convergence chips for older sets may be out of stock and need to be back ordered.

Save Pictures If The Camera Says Format Memory Card

An open SD slot in a digital camera looks like the one on a computer.

Most digital cameras save pictures on an internal memory card. This card is easy to remove from the camera and place into another device or a computer. This makes it easy to move your pictures from place to place. When your device tells you that the card needs to be formatted, this means that the card isn't properly set up to use yet. In order to format the card, you need to put it into a computer. Most laptops and newer desktop computers have a slot in which to put an SD card.

Instructions

1. Remove the card from your camera. Every camera works differently, but information on remove it can be found in the camera's manual.

2. Place the card into your computer's SD card reader, which is an opening about the size of a coin slot. You can also attach an external SD card reader to a USB port.

3. Open 'My Computer' and wait for the listing to refresh.

4. Right-click on the SD card and select 'Format.'

5. Click 'Format' or 'Start' at the bottom of the format window, you don't need to change any settings.

6. Wait for the format to complete.

7. Remove the card from the slot and put the card back into the camera.

Word A Memorial Card

An individual may deal with loss by spending time alone, but your words of encouragement can help.

Loss is undoubtedly an event that everyone must endure in his lifetime, and every person has his own individual method for coping. This process is even more challenging when the death is unexpected. Whether it is the passing of a person close to you or the demise of an individual who was close to someone you know, a few kind words during this time can help ease the grief.

Instructions

1. Address the card directly to the bereaved if she is a close friend or an individual you know on a personal level. When the card is to be sent to the deceased person's family, send it to the closest relative. Include the name of the person who died and your relationship to him. If you are a distant friend or relative, it is appropriate to include a reference to identify yourself, such as "Julie Finch (Bob and Jean Smith's daughter)."

2. Express your sympathy, and make it known that you will keep the family in your thoughts as they face these hard times. Share a warm or funny memory of the individual to show the person receiving the card the impact his loved one had on your life. It could be a story about how you met, some of the happy times you shared together or how he helped you through a tough time in your life.

3. Extend your direct services to the family to help alleviate any more stress than what the family is already experiencing. If you were not a close friend of the family, it would be appropriate to include this in the card or by making face-to-face contact. Offer to prepare meals, help out with kids or elderly family members, take items to the funeral home or help with funeral arrangements.

4. Pick an appropriate and sincere phrase to sum up your feelings and end the card. Possibilities include, "Thinking of you during this difficult time," "I'm praying for you," "Our thoughts and prayers are with you," "With heartfelt condolences" and "May your heart and soul find peace and comfort."

Homemade Shoulder Mount For A Spotting Scope

Homemade Shoulder Mount for a Spotting Scope

Spotting scopes are a great tool for getting a closer look at anything in the outdoors. For anyone interested in taking photography, birdwatching or hunting seriously, having a powerful and steadily mounted spotting scope is essential. Because of the high magnification of a spotting scope, it is near impossible to get a clear view of your target by holding the scope by hand. As an alternative to a tripod, which can be heavy and difficult to set up, making a shoulder mount from some cheap and accessible materials is an easy solution for stability.

Gutter Guard

A gutter guard or support bracket (the rounded metal guards that fit around a drainage gutter to hold it in place) is a perfect shape for the shoulder mount. The rounded part fits snugly over the shoulder, and most already have holes for bolts already there.

Tape or glue some foam lining to the rounded part of the gutter bracket so it fits more comfortably and snugly on the shoulder.

Bolt in another piece of metal onto the guard (can use a mounting bracket for bookcases) to create the optimal length of the shoulder mount. The eyepiece spotting scope should be just at eye level.

Modified Chin-Up Bar

Those chin-up bars that fit over a doorway are a good option because of the shape and adjustable handles (this works best for the kind that have hooked handles). This kind of mount would theoretically go over both of the shoulders and provide another point of stability (although is a bit more cumbersome than the gutter bracket.)

The hooked handles would fit over the shoulder and the bar going across (which normally hooks over the door frame) is the crossbar on which you could mount the spotting scope. The most stable option would require drilling holes through the bar for bolting the scope's platform.

PVC Pipe

The connectable plastic PVC pipe can also be a good solution, though it does require the most amount of goods from outside the house. Straight PVC pieces comprise the handles while a curved "elbow" piece serves as the shoulder mount (another option is putting the curved piece underneath the armpit for stability rather than over the shoulder).

Put a bolt up through the handle pipes that can screw into the spotting scope.

Troubleshoot A Ge A730 Camera That Will Not Turn On

The GE A730 is a digital camera whose features include 7.0 megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom and point and shoot. The camera is powered by 2 AA alkaline batteries. If the camera will not turn on, it's likely the batteries are dead and need to be replaced. Troubleshooting will help you narrow down the problem.

Instructions

1. Slide the GE A730 battery cover to the right. Once it has slid as far as it can go, lift the cover upward.

2. Tilt the camera downward, so the batteries slide out of the camera.

3. Insert two new AA batteries into the battery housing unit. Follow the +/- directions on the inside of the battery cover for proper battery placement.

4. Push the battery cover downward and slide to the left until the cover is closed.

5. Press the "Power" button on the top of the camera. The camera should turn on. If the camera does not turn on, continue troubleshooting.

6. Insert the USB cable into the slot on the side of the camera and the slot on a computer. Turn the computer on. Turn the camera on. If the camera turns on with power from the computer, it's likely the battery housing unit is damaged and may need to be replaced. If the camera will not power on when being powered with new batteries or a USB cord, the camera should be taken to a camera repair shop for further troubleshooting or be replaced.

Pick A 35mm Camera

Film is still very much in style in the world of photography.

Since you will be investing a decent amount of money in buying a 35 mm camera, taking the time to choose the right one is important. If you have already decided to buy a film camera and not a digital camera, you have taken a step towards choosing the best camera. But you still need to decide between the many different features that are available. A quality camera that takes great shots will be an investment that you will enjoy for many years.

Instructions

Choose a 35 mm Camera

1. Outline your goals for your new camera. What is the primary thing(s) you will be photographing? In your notebook, compile a written list of the main subjects you will be photographing with your new 35 mm camera. This will help you choose a camera with the right features.

2. Decide whether you want a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera or a regular point-and-shoot camera. SLRs are more like professional cameras, with interchangeable lenses and more user controls. When you use an SLR, the image you see in the viewfinder is exactly what the lens is seeing. A point-and-shoot camera has a viewfinder that shows a slightly different image than the lens sees, which can cause you to cut off people's heads when taking pictures if you are not careful.

3. Decide how much zoom you want on your camera. In most cases, the more zoom you have, the more expensive the camera will be. You can add zoom capabilities to an SLR using extra lenses.

4. Decide on a budget. When it comes to purchasing a camera, you can spend as much or as little as you want. Plan to spend at least $150 if you want a good quality camera.

5. Visit a camera store that has display cameras available. Try to find a store that allows you to pick up the cameras and does not keep them tied to a table. Handle some cameras that have the features you want, looking through the viewfinder and pretending to take some pictures. Make notes in your notebook about what you find as you check out the different cameras.

6. Look at online reviews before purchasing a camera. Find out what others say about the models you like best. This will tell you about hidden problems, like a low battery life or a flash that breaks easily.

7. Choose a camera that has the features you want and feels comfortable to use. Consider the weight of the camera, because it will likely be strapped around your neck or hung over your shoulder from time to time.

8. Choose a camera that has user controls you can understand and manage easily. A surplus of buttons and levers does not necessarily make a camera a better fit for your needs. If you do not understand use those controls, they will be worthless to you, and they may cause you to mess up an important shot.

Focus A Swann Security Camera

Focus a Swann Security Camera

A security camera is an invaluable part of any home or business. Though we'd all like to believe crimes will never happen to us, it is better to have a camera and not need it than need a camera and not have it. The footage recorded by a camera is a great way to prevent crimes as they happen, and they're good for use in court afterward. Without the ability to focus that camera, you'd never be able to get usable footage of a moving target.

Instructions

1. Take the camera off of auto focus. When a camera auto focuses, it attempts to keep the focus on whatever object is the largest in the frame. This object is not necessarily what you were attempting to view, so take the camera off of auto focus by holding down the "near" and "far" focus buttons on the camera's control panel simultaneously.

2. Focus "near." When viewing the camera, the "near" button focuses on whatever objects are the closest to the camera. To do this, press and hold the "near" button on the camera's control panel.

3. Focus "far." The "far" button places the focus on objects that are the farthest away from the camera. To do this, press and hold the "far" button on the camera's control panel.

4. Turn on auto focus. If at any point you should need or want to have the auto focus on the camera turned back on, you can do this by once again pressing and holding the "near" and "far" buttons simultaneously on the camera's control panel.

Family Portrait Clothing & Posing Ideas

Posing and dressing are key elements of family portraits.

Family portraits are the perfect way to chronicle a moment in time shared by you and your loved ones. These sometimes goofy, sometimes elegant portraits are a way of preserving this memory for years and years to come. If you are a photographer looking for the perfect shot your subject will treasure forever, there are some basic guidelines and styles you can try.

Theme-Coordinated Clothing

Having members of a family dress in theme-coordinated clothing might sound campy, but it actually helps to unify the photo. If the members of the family are dressed in ways that are inconsistent, as in one is wearing a Christmas sweater, while another is wearing a t-shirt, this will stand out in the photo more than the smiling faces. The family's clothing does not have to be matching, it simply needs to be in the same color scheme, use the same fabric choices or be the right style of garment. For example, it would look odd if one member of the family is dressed formally, while another is wearing jeans.

Get in Closer

Perhaps the first rule of posing a family portrait is to get in closer. If the family members are too far apart from each other, the background will come into focus and may distract in the photo. If possible, try blurring the background so the family stays in the forefront of the photo. When posing for family portraits, family members should be grouped together to symmetrically and evenly fill space in the photos.

Have Fun

Family portraits are more than just a picture of a family---they are an indication as to who that family is. Try having fun with the photo's setting and posing. There is no need to have the family stoic or smiling in a forced fashion with a solid black background. Take the family outside, give them props, encourage them to cut loose and have fun. This will help the smiles to seem more real and will give the viewer a sense of the family's spirit.

How Static Guard Works

How Static Guard Works

Static Electricity

Static Guard is a product that protects a person from the effects of static electricity. Static electricity is an electrical charge that simply does not move as opposed to the normal type of electrical charge that flows from place to place. Static electricity has no current to follow so it simply does not move. Static electricity can build up when an object that does not conduct electricity well (something like rubber or plastic) is touched with or rubbed against something that does conduct electricity well (something like clothing). The resulting static electricity can result in a person getting a shock when they touch a piece of clothing or something else that static electricity has built up on.

Static Guard

Static Guard is a spray coating that neutralizes the charge of static electricity. It is a mixture of water, with the minerals and salts removed, and alcohol. When a person sprays Static Guard on her clothing what she is spraying is essentially molecules that are good at conducting electricity. These molecules are have both a positive charge and a negative charge, which prevents static electricity from building up because the neutrally charged static particles have no place to go. Once something has been sprayed with Static Guard even rubbing something that conducts electricity against it will not result in a build up of static electricity like it normally would.

Variations

There are a number of variations on the Static Guard concept. As opposed to a spray solution, certain brands of washing machine detergent solutions can have the same qualities of Static Guard. When clothes are washed with these detergents, the fibers that make them up are allowed to hold in more water and moisture than they normally would. This makes them more capable of conducting electricity than they normally would be, which in turn prevents the build up of static electricity much the same way that spraying them with Static Guard would.

What Is Matte Photo Paper

Matte paper provides black and white photos with an authentic and antique look.

Matte photo paper is a type of paper used to print photos from a home printer. Of the three different finishes available, matte is the least glossy, making it most appropriate for certain types of projects, especially black and white photos.

Types

All types of photo paper begin with the same base paper but are coated with one of three different finishes: glossy, semigloss and matte, also known as nonglossy. Matte offers the dullest finish of the three. It is available in either single- or double-sided finishes; paper with a double-sided finish is suitable for projects that require printing on both sides, such as calendars.

Considerations

Beginning photographers generally prefer glossy paper, because the colors tend to be more lively than when printed on matte photo paper. Colors can appear dull when printed on matte finished paper. Matte paper is recommended for printing black and white photos, as duller finishes can lend a traditional, antique look to the photos that a glossy finish does not.

Benefits

Although glossy finishes tend to be the most popular style of photo paper, choosing the matte finish offers some benefits. Fingerprints and dust are more noticeable on photos printed on a glossy surface, while they do not show up on matte photo paper. Furthermore, matte finishes can be viewed under strong light, while glossy finishes reflect too much glare under direct light.

Fungus On A Cherry Tree

Cherry trees are susceptible to fungal diseases.

Gardeners and nurseries often grow cherry trees as ornamental trees and for their fruit. Fungal diseases can affect the health of the tree, as well as the fruit it bears.

Types

According to North Dakota State University, black knot is a fungal disease occurring in chokecherry and sour cherry trees and is caused by the fungus Dibotryon morbosum, which causes knots to develop on tree stems. Another fungal disease of cherry trees is plum pockets, which endanger fruit development. Plum pockets commonly occur on chokecherry, wild black cherry and Nanking cherry trees.

Symptoms

Symptoms of black knot disease includes knots on branches or tree trunks that eventually girdle the entire tree. Knots often grow for several years before girdling the tree trunk or branches. Plum pockets cause fruit on trees to become hollow and enlarged. Shoots are distorted and leaves curl. A witches broom is common among cherry trees with this disease, especially on sour cherry trees.

Control

Control of fungal diseases such as black knot includes pruning and fungicides to kill the causative fungus. Lime sulfur is an effective treatment for plum pockets in cherry trees, but you must apply it in the springtime. Consult your local extension office for advice on treatments.

Choose Film Stock

In still and motion picture photography, 35mm film is common.

Although most movie production is now done on video, and most photography uses digital sensors, some people either still prefer the feel of working with film or may want to use film for the first time. Selecting a film stock for motion and still photography is a similar process. You first need to decide on a number of basic parameters, then look at the conditions under which the film will be exposed. With some basic analysis, you can establish the basic parameters to narrow the available films down to a manageable number.

Instructions

1. Establish the format of the film usable in your motion picture or still camera. Common movie film is 8mm, 16mm or 35mm. Film for still cameras is produced in Advanced Photo System (APS) size, 35mm, 120 and 220, or medium format and large format sizes. Large format cameras use 4 inch by 5 inch, 5 inch by 7 inch, 8 inch by 10 inch, and larger sheets of film.

2. Decide on whether you want to shoot black and white film or color film. The two films have very different qualities. Although you can digitally make a black and white print based on color film, the grain structure of color film is very different. Color film can be processed in many labs. However, traditional process black and white film often must be sent out for processing and may take longer to get back.

3. Look at the lighting conditions under which you will use the film. This step includes looking at the largest aperture on your lens. Lenses with larger apertures, indicated by a smaller F-stop number, such as f2.8 or smaller, allow more light to fall on the film. If you are shooting under dim lighting conditions, you will need a faster film. Faster film is indicated by higher ASA/ISO ratings. A fast film is ASA/ISO 400, 800, 1600, 3200 or faster. Remember that the higher the ASA/ISO of a film stock, the larger the grain. In general, the higher the ASA/ISO, the higher the film contrast.

4. Select a manufacturer. If you are buying film locally, the retailer will likely have made this decision for you. Retailers tend to carry a very narrow range of film. However, if you are ordering online, you will be able to choose from American film (such as Kodak) Japanese film (Fuji) and European film (Ilford, Foma, Forte and a number of Russian and Eastern European manufacturers). In some cases, you may be able to order some relatively unknown Chinese photographic film.

Program A Slingbox Remote Control

A Slingbox gives you the ability to view your cable or DVR on a computer or mobile phone. Slingbox goes a step further in recreating your typical viewing environment by providing you with a virtual remote control that you can use to change channels and navigate through interactive menus. With devices available from many manufacturers, you will need to program the virtual Slingbox remote control before you are able to use it.

Instructions

Set Up the Virtual Remote Control for Your Slingbox

1. Connect your Slingbox to your video sources. Rather than directly connecting your video sources to your television, you connect them to your Slingbox and then connect your Slingbox to your television.

2. Determine whether you need to install the IR blaster cables that were included with your Slingbox. The IR blaster cables allow you to control a device for which you have a remote control by emulating it. The IR blaster cables must be positioned above and below the IR sensor on the device of the corresponding video source.

3. Connect your Slingbox to the same router to which your computer is connected. You will need to program the Slingbox remote control using your computer and the Slingbox needs to be on the same LAN.

4. Install the SlingPlayer software on your computer. You will need to log into your computer as an administrator to install new software.

5. Proceed through the guided setup process. You will need to indicate the devices that are connected to your Slingbox. Slingbox has been programmed with remote control codes for many audio and video devices from major manufacturers.

6. Try to change channels on your device through the Slingbox to ensure that the correct codes were used to program the Slingbox. If you are using the IR blaster cables, you may need to adjust the speed at which the cables send commands.

7. Select the virtual remote control that you want displayed in SlingPlayer. For some devices, such as TiVo, you can select a generic DVR remote control or the TiVo remote control.

Spot Iphone Scams

As soon as the release date of the iPhone approached, hackers and online criminals started to think of ways to scam unsuspecting consumers with phony iPhone offers and deals. Since you don't want to put yourself at risk, you should know spot iPhone scams.

Instructions

1. Watch out for ads found in emails you receive. You should avoid clicking on links in emails that advertise the iPhone or iPhone deals. Many of these links install malware onto your computer.

2. Pay with a secured method. If an iPhone retailer asks you to pay with a money order or to wire money, then you can assume it's a scam. Legitimate retailers will require a credit card to make an online purchase for the iPhone.

3. Look out for the phrase "Free iPhone." The iPhone costs hundreds of dollars. No company will give one away for free unless there's a catch.

4. Question notices of winning an iPhone. If you haven't entered a drawing for an iPhone, then it's unlikely that you won the device. This scam will likely make your computer vulnerable to spam bots.

5. Stay up-to-date on new scams involving the iPhone. Check ScamBusters.org often to see any new reported scams involving the iPhone.

Choose A Projection Tv

Buying a projection TV can be a big step in enhancing your home theater system. These TVs are different than others because they have an actual projection mechanism instead of a tube inside. The following steps can guide you in find the right projection TV for you.

Instructions

1. Measure the area where you intend to put the TV to know the maximum amount of space you have to fit a TV.

2. Decide whether you are looking for a front or rear projection TV. The difference is great, because with front projection you need a separate screen, but rear projection is all in one.

3. Consider image size. When buying a projector, the manufacturer will note the maximum image size, usually 200 or 300 inches (these levels are achieved by moving the projector further away from the screen). "Consumer Reports" magazine tests show that about 110 inches tends to be the "sweet spot" for viewing.

4. Know what devices you would like to hook into your projector. If you plan on using a DVD player, VCR, cable/satellite box or anything else with your projector, be sure you buy one that has these capabilities.

5. Educate yourself about the differences of LCD and DLP players. Commonly, LCD players are better in reproducing true black, but models vary. DLP, on the other hand, can give a rainbow effect (which happens mostly when eyes are moved across bright objects on the screen) on both front and rear projection TVs. Both, however, have many great qualities.

6. Consider your budget. A projection television is an expensive piece of equipment that requires several different parts including a projector, a screen, speakers, TV tuner, DVD player, satellite/cable box and more, none of which come in a whole package. Make sure you can afford everything you'll need.

Use Lighting In My Photographs

Still cameras, either digital or film, allow a user to capture a moment in time and share the photograph with the world. While the type of camera used directly relates to the quality of images, lighting is perhaps as important or more. Proper lighting makes a difference between a decent photograph and a visually stunning picture. A three-step lighting technique is used by professionals and does not require extensive lighting knowledge to implement.

Instructions

1. Establish a main light, also known as a key light. The key light is the brightest light, and is the main light source when illuminating a subject. Place the key light on one side of the subject; do not position directly in front of the subject. Manipulate the height of the key light until you find the best position.

2. Position the fill light on the opposite side of the subject. The purpose of the fill light is to reduce or remove shadows created by the key light, thus its position opposite the key light is crucial. The brightness level of the fill light is half that of the key light. Play with the height and angle of the fill light until you are satisfied with its coverage.

3. Place the back light close to the floor directly behind the subject. Angle the light beam up toward the top of the subject to highlight the top portion of the subject or place the light directly behind the subject to create a brighter glow behind the subject. The purpose of the back light is to separate the subject from the background, which is important when shooting both indoor and outdoor photographs. The intensity and color of the back light depends on the goal of the photograph; however, the back light is typically half the brightness level of the fill light.

4. Take multiple practice shots and review the photographs. Tweak the placement and brightness levels of all three light sources until you are satisfied with the results.

Build A Simple Antenna

Sometimes your dish gets broken or your cable goes out, and you can't go without a connection to the world of television. What do you do? Good news: The major networks still broadcast to many portions of the country. All you have to do is build an antenna to receive it.

Instructions

1. Look around the back of your television for two screws close together and the word "ant" nearby. It might fully spell out "antenna," but the abbreviation is more common.

2. Find a length of wire with a good gauge. The thicker the better. Make sure that the length of wire can reach from the back of your television to the nearest window.

3. Strip both ends enough to allow one end to wrap behind the screws. Affix the other end to the window frame, taping or nailing down the insulated part and leaving the stripped end free.

4. Secure the rest of the wire with tape, nails or another fixative to keep it from being an obstacle in the room.

5. Wrap the wire around a coat hanger or other piece of metal and place it on or near the television set, instead of using the window, as an alternative. This allows you to adjust the antenna more easily, but also makes it more necessary.

The History Of Telegrams

The telegram is a modern result of the telegraph (a coinage from Greek meaning "far writer"), one of the first devices used to reliably send messages over large distances. The telegram went through many changes in its life, finally becoming a novelty item rather than a communication essential.

First Telegraph

In the late 1700s, Claude Chappe used an elaborate system that relied on a large board painted black on one side and white on the other. By flipping the sides in time to a clock, someone with a synchronized clock and a telescope could receive a message up to 10 miles away. This setup coined the term "telegraph."

Chappe's Improvement

After his device was destroyed, Chappe improved the old design by switching the board for a mechanical, movable beam. The beam could be set up in any number of positions to represent numbers, letters and predetermined phrases.

Morse Code

Samuel Morse developed a system that transmitted long and short bursts of electrical current. The bursts were transmitted over wire to a small device, which played them as long or short sounds ("dots and dashes"). An operator would interpret the sounds as letters and transfer them to a sheet.

Western Union

The modern-day "wire transfer" company, Western Union, began in 1851 as a national telegraph company.

Teletypewriter

Until 1914, a highly skilled operator had to be available for all telegrams. Then came teletypewriters that were capable of automatically interpreting and printing the message. Subsequent technological advancements made it possible for more than one message to come through a line at once.

Decline

Once telephones and long-distance calling became inexpensive and available in most American homes, telegrams began to decline in popularity. Telegrams continued to be used for exciting, unusual or special events. Many companies continue to offer "singing telegrams" and standard telegrams can still be sent through Western Union.

Tweak A Cd Player By Removing The Cover

The frequency response of a portable CD player is inhibited by design so that the volume in the headphones is not too loud. "Tweak" (modify) the portable CD player so that the muting effect is no longer functioning. A partial disassembly of the player is needed, as are a few tools found in most households. You do not need to have any electrical skills to tweak the portable CD player, but any warranty that is in place will be voided by your actions.

Instructions

1. Remove any CD from inside the portable CD player. Remove the rechargeable battery, if there is one, or the disposable batteries from the battery compartment; a screw may need to be removed from the battery compartment lid first, using a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

2. Place the portable CD player face down on a work surface. Remove the screws from the bottom of the player with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Grip any rubber feet or plastic tabs on the bottom with the jaws of a needle-nose pliers. Pull any rubber feet or plastic tabs off the bottom of the player. Remove any screws from beneath the rubber feet or plastic tabs with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

3. Turn the player over. Pull the outer case off the bottom of the player with your fingers. Place the outer case aside. Blow off the electronics on the bottom case with bursts of compressed air.

4. Locate the copper-colored module inside the bottom of the player. Trace the wiring going from the module to the RCA headphone jack, so you can locate the resistors that are labeled as follows: QN05, QN06, QN07 and QN08.

5. Cut off the pins on each side of the resistors with a wire cutters; cutting close to the resistor lessens the chances of scratching the circuit board during the procedure. Push each of the cut ends of the pins upward to further separate them from the circuit board. Blow off the resistors and the circuit board with bursts of compressed air.

6. Place the outer case back on the bottom of the player. Turn the player over and reattach the screws. Return the battery or batteries to the battery compartment, close the lid and reattach a screw if there was one. Dab the glue from a glue stick over the spots on the bottom where the rubber feet and/or plastic tabs originally were. Return any rubber feet and/or plastic tabs to their original position on the bottom of the player. Press down on them with your fingers to adhere them to the glue. Let the glue set for 10 minutes before turning the portable CD player right side up.

Troubleshoot A Cell Phone

Cellular phones don't always function as perfectly as you might wish. This chart offers some solutions for common problems with these devices. If you don't find an answer here, bring your phone to an authorized cell-phone center. Avoid taking apart the phone, because this will void most warranties.

Instructions

Technical Difficulties

1. If the phone doesn't turn on, make sure battery is charged and fully plugged into phone. Remove battery from phone and use rag to brush away dirt that may interfere with connection. Reconnect and try again. If using cigarette-lighter adapter, make sure it's properly plugged in. Make sure charger is properly plugged into outlet and into battery.

2. When the battery doesn't charge, plug lamp or other electrical device into outlet to verify that outlet works. Borrow friend's charger to see if charger or battery is problem. Replace charger or battery if necessary.

3. In case the phone gets wet, remove the battery from the phone and allow both to dry thoroughly. If rust or corrosion develops, wipe it off with a stiff brush. If phone still does not work, replace it.

4. Should the display not be working, try getting it to room temperature, extremely cold or warm conditions may affect display functions.

5. If the keys don't work, look for a display of a symbol that looks like a lock. The keypad may be locked. The display often tells you unlock it. If not, check owner's manual.

Problems While Talking

6. During times of bad reception, make sure antenna is up, check to see if the battery is low. If you're indoors, move toward window or go outside to get better reception. Remember that tunnels, basements and elevators interfere with cellphone reception. In case of storm, wait for it to subside. Contact your service provider if you have chronic static; phone may be defective.

7. If you can't hear the other person, make sure the volume is not turned down entirely.

8. Check that antenna is up if you get interference from another call. Change locations for better reception or switch to a digital phone.

9. When you experience many dropped calls, check the battery. It may be low. If you constantly lose calls, consider switching to provider with better coverage and/or to digital phone. Providers that offer digital service combined with analog tend to have better coverage.

Dialing Issues

10. If you can't dial out, try again. The network may be full. Change locations to get a better signal. If the display says "No SVC" or "No Service," you are in area with no service. Wait until you enter area with service. Check to see if battery is low. If you are outside the service area, contact customer service (try 611 on cell phone). Some service areas require PIN numbers to protect against fraud.

11. If you can't receive calls, confirm that neither call forwarding nor automatic voice-mail pickup is activated. Make sure ringer volume is turned up. Confirm that ringer is on (not in silent mode). Change locations for better reception. If display says "No SVC" or "No Service," you are in area with no service. Wait until you enter area with service. Call customer service. You may have restrictions on incoming calls.

12. If you can't make long-distance calls, call your service provider (try 611 on cell phone). You may be out of calling range and/or may need PIN number to dial long-distance numbers.

13. When problems occur with your service provider, call customer service to register complaint (try 611 on cell phone). If that does not resolve problem, contact: FCC Consumer Information Bureau Customer Services Network Division 445 12th St. SW Washington, DC 20554.

Install A Cb Radio In A Jeep Liberty

Installing a CB radio in a Jeep Liberty may be more challenging than you think, because the best storage space idea--beneath the center dash with the AC and radio controls--is not optimal. There's not enough room even after removing the plastic. So you're better off finding another place.

Instructions

1. Find the best location in the Jeep, taking the CB's size into consideration. The ceiling may work best, but you could try under either seat, on top of the dash or even on or in the glove compartment.

2. Install the mounting into the car and the radio to the mounting. Since this involves drilling with screws, nuts and bolts, make sure the surface you choose can be drilled through safely. If not, you'll need another location.

3. Attach the wiring to the radio. Route the wiring out of the cab to the engine. In a Liberty, there should be a hole in the driver's side carpet you can use once you remove the plastic trim.

4. Connect the wire to the fuse box. Going right to the accessory block gives you the best power. You will also need to screw a ground wire somewhere in the Jeep. You can attach it to an OEM screw near the firewall.

5. Find a place to screw down the mike mount. It should be somewhere close to the radio, easily accessible and with the mike wire out of the way.

6. Route the antenna wire out through the car and mount the antenna. At least one- to two-thirds of the antenna should be above the roof for best reception. This makes the middle of the roof best.

Make A Lightbox To Photograph A Ring

A light box is a key tool for a photographer.

When trying to display small jewelry items such as rings, an indispensable tool for a photographer is a light box. Whether you wish to sell the ring or artfully photograph it, a light box will help photographers achieve a professional appearance while letting the jewelry piece in question stand out. Photographers can make their own light box at home with an old box and a few inexpensive supplies that can be found at craft stores.

Instructions

1. Tape the bottom of the box closed.

2. Draw a square in the center of one side of the box, leaving a 2-inch border on all sides.

3. Repeat on the other three sides of the box.

4. Cut out all four center squares using scissors or a box cutter, leaving the 2-inch borders intact.

5. Cut the closure flaps off the top of the box.

6. Cut 16 strips of white tag board. They should be 2 inches wide.

7. Glue the strips to the inside of the box on all four sides around the 2-inch borders. Cut the strips down to fit the edges where necessary. When you are finished, all the walls of the box interior should be covered in white tag board.

8. Cut white fabric into four squares that measure the same as the box sides.

9. Tape the white fabric squares over three of the square openings on the sides of the box.

10. Cut a piece of tag board in your desired background color that measures as wide as your box. Lay it against the bottom of the box and up the side opposite the remaining open side. Cut any of the tag board that hangs over the top of the box. The tag board should cover the bottom and one side without creasing, as the crease will show up in your photographs.

11. Tape the final square of white fabric over the top of the box.

12. Place the ring in the box on top of the background tag board. To photograph it, use a lamp to light the box from the top. The fabric on top of the box will evenly distribute the light and improve your picture quality. Set up your camera in the open side of the box.

Troubleshoot An Rca Big Screen Tv

RCA manufactures a range of sets including LCD displays.

RCA manufactures a range of big-screen TV sets, including plasma, LCD and rear-projection units. Rear-projection units use projected light from behind the screen to generate images. They can suffer from a range of issues including power failures and overheating. LCD and plasma sets can also suffer problems such as picture format anomalies, especially on wide-screen sets. Many faults can be remedied by doing some basic checks and adapting your TV's settings. For complex failures, however, you should consult RCA directly or hire a TV-repair person.

Instructions

Excessive Heat

1. Feel the back of your RCA set if you experience picture or sound interference. These problems can sometimes be caused by overheating on big-screen, rear-projection sets. Sets that turn themselves off at random intervals might also have overheating problems. Most rear-projection units come with built-in safety features that shut off the power supply when the set gets too warm.

2. Examine the air vents at the rear of your rear-projection TV. Dirt and debris can often collect in these areas, causing the cooling fans to work inefficiently and generate excessive heat.

3. Remove any dirt with a damp cloth; wipe the area clean with a damp --- not wet --- cloth. Make sure the air conditioning is kept up high and the drapes are drawn if your TV is in a room that experiences a lot of heat.

Picture Format

4. Change the aspect ratio of your big-screen RCA TV if you can see black bars at the edges of images displayed on screen. This is a common issue with wide-screen LCD and plasma sets, which are designed to display pictures in a 16:9 wide-screen format. Most standard-definition broadcasts are in 4:3, causing the black bars to appear.

5. Press the "Menu" option on your RCA remote control and select "Picture Settings." Adjust the picture format to 16:9. With your cable-box remote, access "Menu" options and make sure the "Picture Settings" are set to 16:9, too.

6. Contact RCA Customer Support if you continue to experience problems after adjusting "Settings," as advised on the RCA website.

Power Issues

7. Make sure the sleep timer is not activated if your big-screen RCA TV turns itself off at random intervals. The sleep-timer feature switches off the power supply after a set period to reduce the cost of energy bills.

8. Press "Menu" on your remote control and select the "Settings" option. Select the "Sleep Timer" icon and change it to "Off."

9. Disconnect your RCA TV and connect another appliance to the same wall outlet if you are receiving no power at all. If the problem reoccurs, the electrical outlet needs to be repaired.
