Handle A Microphone During A Vocal Performance

Handle a Microphone During a Vocal Performance

When performing live as a singer, it's imperative to know where to position your microphone and yourself. You should also keep in mind how far you can move away and find out before the show begins whether you can take the mic off the stand.

Instructions

1. Position the microphone so that your posture is upright but relaxed. You shouldn't have to hunch over to sing into the mic; this decreases your breath support. Also, place the mic on stage so that the people can see you well. Some singers play a cat-and-mouse game with the spotlight while trying to perform. Sing in the spotlight. People came to see you. Let them.

2. Determine what type of singer you are. Dynamic singers with powerful voices need less microphone sensitivity, while singers with softer voices and less range of sound need more sensitivity. Speak with the venue's sound technician to test your levels and do a run-through of a song before the performance begins. If you're a dynamic singer, know when to move back from the mic and when to be close. Others should stay close to the mic at all times.

3. Wipe off the microphone with a disinfectant towel before using it, if it's not your personal mic. You'll likely need to be very close to the microphone once the amps are on, especially if you have a band, in order for the mic to pick up your voice properly.

4. Practice removing the microphone from the stand and holding it very close to your lips if you plan on removing it during your performance. Each mic system is different. Be sure to check that the chord is secure and duct tape it to the mic if there's a chance it might fall off.
