Set The Swr On A Wilson 2000

The Wilson 2000 is a stick antenna that is mounted on the vehicle and attached to the CB so transmissions can be heard and received. The ideal standing wave on any CB radio is 1.5 or below for the best transmission and reception. The standing wave ratio (SWR) meter is used to check the standing wave on the Wilson 2000 antenna before any adjustments are made to the antenna to lengthen or shorten the height to change the standing wave.

Instructions

1. Connect the coaxial cable coming from the Wilson 2000 antenna to the "Ant In" on the SWR meter. Connect the coaxial cable jumper to the SWR meter "Out" to the "Ant In" on the CB radio. If the CB has a built-in SWR meter, attach the coaxial cable from the Wilson 2000 antenna to the back of the CBs "Ant In." Follow the directions for checking the standing wave, but use the built-in meter and switches.

2. Close the vehicle doors and any sunroofs or windows. This cuts down on outside noises that could interfere with checking the standing wave.

3. Turn the CB to channel 1. Move the switch on the SWR meter to "FWD." Hold the microphone transmit button in on the side of the microphone. Do not talk into the microphone. Turn the knob on the SWR meter so it is set on "CAL." When you have the needle set to "CAL," flip the switch to "REF." Read the SWR meter that is showing the standing wave on channel 1. Write down the meter reading number. Turn the CB to channel 40 and perform this step again on the higher channel. Write down the meter reading.

4. Read the SWR readings that you wrote down. If channel 40 has a higher standing wave reading from channel 1 and the reading is over the 1.5 standing wave limit, the antenna is too long. If the channel 1 reading is higher than the reading on channel 40 and the standing wave is over the 1.5 standing wave reading, the antenna is too short.

5. Lengthen the Wilson antenna by raising the antenna up. Use the Allen wrench that comes with the antenna to loosen the set screw in the side of the mount holding the antenna in place. Raise the antenna up 1/4 inch. Tighten the set screw. Recheck the standing wave using step 3. If the standing wave is 1.5 or under on both channels the antenna is set correctly. If the reading is still high, keep adjusting the antenna, raising it 1/4 inch each time.

6. Shorten the Wilson 2000 antenna if the standing wave is above 1.5 by cutting the antenna. This is a tough step to complete, because once you cut the antenna, you can never again lengthen the antenna. Remove the antenna from the mount by loosening the set screw and pulling the antenna out. Use a utility knife to cut 1/16 inch off the bottom of the antenna.

7. Replace the antenna and recheck following step 3. If the standing wave is still above 1.5 on both channels, remove the antenna and cut another 1/16 inch off. Continue this step until you have a good standing wave, but do not remove more than 1/4 inch from the antenna.
