Prewire
If your home is new, it is best to prewire it for cable TV. The wire used is a 75 ohm RG-6 cable. You'll need to run wire from where the cable company wants to run its cable to each room in which you might want cable. Terminate it with wall jacks that have coaxial connections. At the place where the cable company will run its cable, you will need to install a junction terminal; consult with your local cable company about how they like to do this.
Install
The cable company will perform cable installation, and it is always a part of signing up for cable TV. If you have prewired jacks, the installer will run cable from the jacks to your TV and set up the cable box (if you are getting digital or HD cable), or will connect it straight to the TV (for cable-ready and CableCARD-equipped sets). The installer then will program the box/TV. When running cable, the installer will run it along the baseboard in your home if the jack is not where the TV is located.
Splitters
Don't use a splitter except as a last resort. If you haven't prewired the house and want to split the main cable signal to send to another room, you'll get the best results if you have the cable installer do it. However, if you don't want to pay an additional installation fee, you can try using 2.4 GHz splitters, far better than the old 900 MHz splitters. Try to get a splitter that has a circuit board, and consider using inline signal amplifiers as part of the setup.
