Counter Surveillance Stalking Techniques

Many people believe that if you aren't specifically doing something wrong, then there would be no reason for anyone to have you under surveillance. However, in today's world it is becoming more common for your privacy to be invaded because of the fact that somebody is either watching or stalking you. If this is a concern, counter surveillance measures should be employed for the sake of your safety and privacy.

Techniques to Use

Although there is equipment that can be obtained and used for counter surveillance measures, many of the techniques that can be used involve no equipment at all. If you believe that you are being watched, or that your phone might be bugged by somebody who is stalking you, you should be mindful of what you say in your home environment. Code words or names can be used, or you can avoid using the phone in your home, and only use phones in alternate locations. When out in public, avoid mentioning important information, and always keep a close eye on your surroundings. Use only private locations to discuss critical matters.

Protect Your Personal Data

Personal data should always be protected and safeguarded, as it could be used to get further information on you by a stalker. Always keep your computer secure, and don't use a calendar that you allow to be unprotected on your desk or in your home. Address books and contact lists should also be kept safeguarded at all times. Papers should be shredded before being discarded, and credit card information and other account information should be stored in a locked area, or in a bank safety deposit box. If you use your computer in a public location, make sure the screen is protected and out of view, and always password protect and lock your computer when it is not in use. If you use a cell phone or PDA, always keep information password protected, and make sure that the device is security locked. Mail should be delivered to a post office box instead of using a home mailbox.

Counter Surveillance Equipment

If you believe you are under surveillance or are being stalked, there is some equipment that you can acquire which will help you stay safe. For example, there are bug detectors that can be used to detect specific types of surveillance equipment. These inspections should include the overall area of your home or office, in addition to electronic and telephone lines. There are also audio jammers and noise generators which can be used to thwart line taps by either producing a masking noise or by generating voice band noise. You might also want to get security software for your computer which tracks and logs activities that are performed.
