Rear projection screens deliver some of the best pictures of any type of television on the market. However, as with all pieces of technology, they sometimes have problems and break down, often due to the projector in the back failing. Noticing the signs that the rear projector in your big screen television is going bad will help you get the problem fixed before the TV goes dark.
Blue Discoloration
One of the most common signs is a blue tint, blob or smear that affects rear projection television screens. This is a sign that your rear projection bulb is on the verge of failing. This problem will probably get worse, so it is a good idea to either get an extended warranty on the television or try to replace the lamp and hope that it fixes the problem. However, sometimes replacing the broken lamp is not the solution and it will cost a good amount of extra money in parts and labor to repair your rear projection television.
Random Squiggly Lines on Screen
Random squiggly lines may appear permanently on the screen of rear projection televisions, which is an obvious sign there is something going wrong within the mechanics of the television itself. These lines are often blue or purple or sometimes yellow or green, and are due to damage that has somehow occurred to the television's LCD panel, which is an expensive part of the television. Sometimes these lines actually become less over time, as the rear projection television will "fix" itself, but this is rare.
Red, Green and Blue Bands
Red, green and blue bands sometimes appear over the image on the screen of the rear projection television and this is yet another sign that the rear projector is going bad. These three colors are used to project all the images onto the television screen as light from the bulb is shined through them and displayed on the screen. If something is wrong with the bulb, then an abnormal amount of light will shine through one of the colors, creating these bands onscreen. This will mean the bulb needs to be replaced, which may be pointless considering how much that costs. Extended warranties on these rear projection televisions are a good idea.
