Fix A Digital Camera Lens Cover

Use a lens cover to protect your camera.

The lens cover protects the valuable lens on any digital camera. The glass to the lens is often the most expensive piece of equipment on the camera and the hardest to replace, so if the glass is damaged you may need to purchase a new camera. For that reason, it's best to correct issues with your lens cover as soon as possible.

Instructions

1. Press in on the two small contraction buttons on the side of the camera lens. The buttons release and secure the lens cover. Make sure you can press these in and out easily. Some lens covers simply slip off and on without the release buttons, in which case you don't need to worry about this.

2. Remove any junk buildup along the contraction buttons. The debris can build up inside the cracks around the cover and prevent the buttons from retracting properly from your touch.

3. Clean off dust from the inside of the cover. The dust can attach itself to the lens of your camera and damage your lens or appear on your pictures.

4. Make sure your cover is the correct size to fit securely on your camera lens. This can be a concern if you lose the original cover and need a replacement. The size in millimeters is usually present on the cover, and you can read the lens millimeter size on the side of the lens. Depending on your camera, you may be able to use a lens cover that is too large, but it won't be snug. Use the large cover only until you can obtain a lens cover that fits correctly.

5. Apple black electrical tape to any cracks on the lens cover. The black tape helps block out light and hold the cover together.

6. Put a new hole in the edge of your lens cover. This is necessary when a loop of string holds the cover to your camera and the hole that encompasses the string becomes a full-fledged break, allowing the cover to fall freely. Hold the tip of a sharp knife against the side of the lens cover and twist the knife until it creates a small hole. Loop the string through the hole, securing your lens cover. Cut the hole while the lens cover is off the camera.
