Cheap Substitutes For Cd Lens Cleaning Fluid

There are several easy and inexpensive ways to clean CDs.


After several uses, CDs and DVDs can become scratched and dirty, causing them to skip or not play at all. There are several easy and inexpensive ways to clean CDs using household products. While these remedies will not remove deep scratches, they will significantly help reduce smaller scratches and help your CDs perform better. Before cleaning CDs with any of the solutions below, first remove any dirt or dust from the surface of the CD by rubbing it lightly with a microfiber or other soft cloth. Beginning wiping the CD at the center hole and end at the edge. CDs should never be wiped in a circular motion because this can cause further scratching.


Rubbing Alcohol


Rubbing alcohol can be purchased at any drugstore or department store for less than $2 a bottle. Most homes have rubbing alcohol as part of a first-aid kit. To clean CDs, pour equal parts of water and rubbing alcohol in a container. Wet the corner of a microfiber or other soft cloth with the solution and gently wipe the CD, beginning at the center and ending at the edge.


Toothpaste


Toothpaste serves as a way to gently clean the surface of teeth without stripping away the protective enamel layer. Toothpaste can also be used to clean a CD, without fear of causing harm to the surface. Gently rub a thin layer of toothpaste on the CD surface. Wait for five minutes and gently wipe off the toothpaste using a soft cloth or microfiber cloth. Rinse the CD under running water and dry with a separate, dry cloth.


Metal Polish


Metal polish, such as Brasso, is an inexpensive way to clean CDs. In a well-ventilated area, pour the metal polish directly on the CD. Using a microfiber cloth, and polish the CD from center to edge. Gently rub the metal polish onto the CD for several minutes. Allow the CD to sit, with the metal polish still on it, for approximately 10 minutes. Rinse the CD under water and gently pat dry.


Baking Soda


Baking soda is a natural abrasive that will gently clean CDs. Pour two tablespoons of baking soda into a bowl and add small amounts of water until a paste forms. Gently rub the baking soda paste onto the CD, from center to edge. Rinse under running water and pat dry. You may need to repeat this process to get an optimal clean.
