Use A Strobe Tuner

Strobe tuners provide unparalleled accuracy in tuning.

Stroboscopic instrument tuners, commonly known as strobe tuners, provide unparalleled accuracy in properly tuning stringed instruments to a desired frequency, with a margin of error of roughly 0.1 cent. These tuners visually display the difference between a reference tone and the tone being played by lighting a spinning wheel in mechanical tuners or a strobe display in virtual tuners.

Instructions

1. Plug your instrument into the strobe tuner. Insert a 1/4-inch cable into your instrument and then insert the opposite end of the cable into the tuner’s input slot.

2. Select the note you would like to use as your reference tone. Depending on the type of strobe tuner you have, you may either have to turn a dial to choose the tone or press a button. If the tuner is chromatic, meaning that it will automatically tune to the nearest note you are playing, you do not need to select a tone.

3. Play a string on your instrument and watch the strobe tuner to see if you are in tune. If the strobe display spins counterclockwise, the note is flat. If it spins clockwise, the note you are playing is sharp.

4. Lower or raise the pitch of the string until the display is entirely stationary. Once the strobe display has stopped moving, the note is at perfect pitch with the desired frequency.

5. Repeat as necessary for the remaining strings on your instrument.
