Zoom The Lens When Taking A Photograph

Most photographs require you to zoom the lens to get a closeup.

One of the most important camera fundamentals is learning zoom the lens. Although this skill is intuitive for many, you will never be able to take good photos without mastering your camera's zoom feature. Learn more about zooming to get the most out of your camera and to ensure that you never miss a good photo opportunity.

Instructions

1. Make sure the camera is on and the lens cap is off.

Turn the camera on. Remove the lens cap so you will be ready to take a photo after zooming the lens. Point the camera toward the subject.

2. You must zoom manually with a lens ring on DSLR cameras.

Turn the lens zoom ring to adjust the focal length on SLR and digital SLR cameras. Most lenses zoom in by turning the ring to the right. Turn it to the left to zoom out. Some lenses, however, work in the opposite way. Look through the view finder to determine the effects of turning the zoom ring on your particular lens.

3. Turn the dial left or right to adjust the zoom.

Press the right or left zoom button or turn the zoom dial if you are using a point-and-shoot camera. These models do not have interchangeable lenses. The zoom controls on these cameras are usually located near the upper right-hand corner of the device.

Press the right zoom button to increase the zoom. It generally has a "+" label. Use the "-" button on the left to zoom out. If your camera has a zoom dial, move it to the right to zoom in and turn it left to zoom out.

4. Zoom in to frame the subject for a portrait shot.

Zoom the lens appropriately. Consider what effect zooming in will have on the photo. For landscape shots, it is generally not a good idea to zoom in very far. When shooting a portrait, however, you should zoom in close to the subject. Sometimes you just need to zoom a little to remove an extraneous object from the shot.

Many photographers are cautious about zooming too far because although computer software can crop out unwanted parts of a photo, it is impossible to recover scenery that was never part of the picture to begin with.
