Buy A Satellite Radio Car Receiver

Satellite radio is different from conventional, or terrestrial, radio for many reasons. First of all, because it is a subscriber service, much of the programming is commercial free and uncensored. And because it is transmitted by satellite, you can literally drive across the country while listening to the same station. Buying a satellite radio car receiver is a simple way to enjoy this new technology.

Instructions

Buy a Satellite Radio Car Receiver

1. Choose between the two primary satellite radio services available in North America, XM Radio and Sirius. Compare subscription plans, programming and the price of the hardware in order to get the subscription service that best fits your needs and interests.

2. Determine which type of satellite radio car receiver you need for your vehicle. You can choose an add-on receiver that includes an FM adapter so that you can use it with any existing car radio. You can also buy a stereo unit that entirely replaces the tape, CD and AM/FM tuner system in your vehicle.

3. Purchase an add-on satellite radio car receiver from a variety of retail outlets if you are happy with the current sound system in your vehicle. These units usually represent the most inexpensive way to buy a receiver and can be easily installed using adhesive strips or suction cups on your dashboard. You will need to hide the cabling that runs from the receiver to the antenna and must be affixed to the exterior of your vehicle.

4. Pick an in-dash unit from a reputable electronics store or car-audio dealer, and have an expert perform a clean, professional installation, including the antenna wire. You can do the job yourself if you have experience with car-stereo installation.

5. Log on to the website of XM Radio or Sirius in order to buy the subscription plan that is best for you (see Resources below). Alternatively, you can follow the instructions in the owner's manual of either receiver to call XM and Sirius by phone for activation.
