D70 Compatible Compact Flash Cards

A compact flash card

The D70, which was replaced in 2005 by the D70s, is a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera manufactured by Nikon. The D70 and D70s are still available used, but they no longer are produced by Nikon. The D80, released in 2006, is a comparable model. A compact flash (CF) card is a memory card that is able to hold data without power. Like many DSLR cameras, the Nikon D70 is compatible with both.

Nikon Approved List

Nikon has tested several types of CF cards with the D70 and its various functions and published a list of cards guaranteed to be compatible. This list includes several speeds of SanDisk and Lexar Media CF cards, as well as a few others. Other cards might work with the D70 but are not guaranteed compatible by Nikon.

SanDisk

Nikon has approved varieties of CF cards manufactured by SanDisk for use with the D70, including the SanDisk Ultra, Ultra II, Extreme and Extreme III. The Extreme IV and Extreme Pro CF cards are not approved by Nikon. The names "Ultra" and "Extreme" as well as the roman numerals refer to the write speeds of the cards. The Extreme CF card has a faster write speed than the Ultra and costs significantly more. You probably will not see a difference between speeds in D70 performance unless you often use the continual burst mode (holding the shutter down to take as many photos as possible, as quickly as possible).

Lexar Media

Nikon has approved Lexar Media's CF cards in a variety of sizes and write speeds for use with the D70. As of November 2010, Lexar Media offers CF cards up to a speed of 233x, while Nikon's approved list only goes up to 80x. Lexar Media CF cards in slower speeds may be available and cards with faster speeds are likely to work but are not guaranteed. According to kenrockwell.com, Lexar offers free data recovery on their cards, which would enable you to recover photos for free if something goes wrong with the card.

Other Cards

Along with the SanDisk and Lexar Media CF cards, the Renesas Technology CF card in 16 megabytes and 32 megabytes also are approved by Nikon. The use of generic CF cards is not recommended because they are prone to data loss.
