The Best Cameras For A Wedding Photographer

Wedding photographers have several cameras to choose from.

In the hands of a wedding photographer, a camera is nothing more than a tool. It is the instrument that photographer uses to create lasting images of a couple's special day. With the advent of digital technology, digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are very similar from company to company. There are some considerations in picking the best camera for a wedding photographer to use.

Professional DSLRs

This most significant difference for this category when compared to the others is the durability of the components used in the actual camera. Professional cameras such as the Canon 1D Mark 4 and the Nikon D3s use shutters that are rated to last more than 250,000 actuations. The body construction of DSLRs in this category are designed to repel dust and water. These cameras are designed for professional photographers who shoot a lot of pictures every year, such as wedding photographers.

"Pro-Sumer" DSLRs

This category is a bridge category between the entry level DSLRs and the professional grade DSLRs. Cameras in this category include the Canon 5D Mark 2 and the Nikon D700. Both of these cameras use full-frame sensors. With cropped sensors, you lose some of the field of view when you attach a lens. When a lens is attached to these cameras, it has the same focal length and field of view as it would have if it was attached to a film camera. This is a benefit for wedding photographers who need the lenses to perform the same way as they would on a film camera.

Entry Level DSLRs

Cameras in this category include the Canon Digital Rebel line and the Nikon D50s. While these cameras are good for an amateur or advanced amateurs, for a professional wedding photographers these cameras would be good as a second option or back-up camera. Unlike the other two categories, these cameras are not designed to withstand the number of pictures that professional photographers shoot on a yearly basis.

Digital Medium Format Cameras

Medium format cameras, like the Mamiya 7 series of cameras, use 120 roll film that is loaded into a "film back" that attaches to the back of the camera. This film produces a larger negative, and gives photographers the flexibility to enlarge a picture more than a 35mm film camera. While they are very expensive, you can now buy a "digital backs" to attach to the rear of these cameras. These backs produce larger digital files, which can be enlarged significantly.
