Hold A Canvas Backdrop Up

Canvas backdrops can be mounted on PVC and light stands.

Canvas backdrops can be an affordable way to give a portrait a professional look. Many canvas backdrops come already mounted onto wooden poles for easy hanging. However, you can save money by mounting the canvas backdrops yourself and using light stands to hang them. Mounting and hanging a canvas backdrop takes less than an hour. Assembly uses common household tools and the materials can be found at most hardware stores.

Instructions

1. Mark a line across one of the 6-foot-long sides of your canvas exactly 8 inches from the edge. Fold the canvas over so the edge meets the line making a 4-inch loop. Pin the fold down in a straight line across the length of the fabric. Do not crease the fold.

2. A zigzag stitch adds strength and reinforcement.

Sew down the fold of canvas using thread that matches your backdrop. Sew across the entire 6-foot length of the backdrop using an over-locking zigzag stitch.

3. Drill a 5/8-inch hole on each end of the PVC pipe about 2 inches in from the end. Drill the hole directly in the middle of the pipe and make sure the hole goes all the way through the PVC pipe.

4. Push the PVC pipe through the canvas via the opening on the fold that you sewed down. Center the canvas so that there is 1 foot of PVC extending from each end. Use the PVC pipe as a core to roll-up the canvas. Do not remove the PVC when the canvas is rolled up.

5. Set up your light stands 8 feet apart where you will be using the backdrop. Bring the rolled canvas to the stands and place the ends onto the light stands by aligning the light stand tips with the holes you drilled into your PVC.

6. Raise the light stands to the desired height and carefully unroll the canvas backdrop to display it.
