Make Fog Juice For Fog Machines

You can create your own fog juice to make fog at home.

Create an eerie feel for trick-or-treaters at Halloween, or add rolling mist for a theater performance or a concert, with a fog machine. These machines often require you to purchase fog juice, the substance added to create fog. But, if you prefer, you can make your own fog juice with just a couple of ingredients.

Instructions

1. Purchase pure glycerin, sometimes called glycerol, from your local pharmacy. Smaller fog machines use 1 gallon of fog juice in 8 hours, and larger fog machines use 1 gallon of fog juice in an hour. Use this estimate to determine how much glycerin you will need.

2. Add deionized water to your glycerin. You will need four separate mixtures of glycerin and water. One should be 10 percent, which will create a medium haze; 30 percent will create a heavy haze and 50 percent will be a light fog. Use a 75 percent mixture to create a heavy fog. Shake the mixture vigorously to combine the water and glycerin.

3. Apply the 10 percent solution to your fog machine, and turn it on. Pay attention to the fog´s density and air current movement. If this is for a performance, have the performers nearby to make sure your fog juice mixture doesn´t cause any irritation.

4. Repeat Step 3 with the other 30, 50 and 75 percent solutions. Compare the results to decide which has the best effect. Make a large batch of the preferred solution.
