Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Killer Tips

Adobe Lightroom allows advanced amateurs and professionals to efficiently edit photos.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom allows users to upload, edit and display photos or images by creating a virtual darkroom. Photographers can manipulate digital images with advanced editing tools and are able to create a library of photographs. This software is geared towards advanced amateurs and professional photographers with its high-end features and price tag.

Manipulating Photos

Convert color photos quickly into black and white by selecting the "V" key on your keyboard. If the photo is a fit for black and white, save it like this or simply hit the "V" key again to convert the photo back into color.

When exporting photos, always set the maximum size preferred for the photo, otherwise Lightroom exports the photos in the default settings. Choose "Create Previews" for imported images as this will speed up the editing process when wanting to preview changes.

Increase the Adobe Camera Raw Cache storage from the default 1GB to a maximum of 50GB (which may require the addition of a separate hard drive) by going into the "File Handling Tab." This allows more space with which to work, especially when using previews.

Panels

"Camera Calibration" is used when manipulating raw files. This allows for the manipulation of the primary colors (red, green and blue) on the computer and the addition of more color saturation.

Sharpen raw photos by using the "Detail Panel" and reduce blur and other noise from raw photos. This tool gives the user more control over fine-tuning photos than normal sharpening tools.

Remove extraneous panels from view by a right-click on the title bar on the panel and selecting "Solo Mode." This provides a view of the entire photo without obstruction from panels. Hit the "T" on your keyboard to hide the bottom toolbar to obtain a clear view of your photo, or hit the "Tab" key to hide all side panels.

Library

Rate photos in the "Library" by holding the "Shift" key down and selecting the number rating. For example, if you wish to give the photo a "3" rating, simply press "Shift" and the "3" key. This pops you to the next photo in the library. Alternatively, use the "Auto Advance" option on the photo menu for tagging. Tagging a photo automatically moves to the next photo in the "Library."

Always flag, tag or rate photos so that favorites are easily found without having to scroll through the entire library. The "Loupe View" allows the user to view and scroll through individual photos by using the right and left arrow keys. Select "Filter" options in the photo menu to search for photos with certain tags. The "Collections" option is for pictures taken at the same time which then can be filtered by ratings and tags for favorites.
