Use A 300mm Zoom Lens

Get close-up photos of wildlife with a 300mm zoom lens.

When a photographer wants to get close to the action, but not disturb the scene, reaching for a 300mm zoom lens does the job. Whether the photographer uses a film or digital camera body, electronics manufacturers offer 300mm zoom lenses to fit both camera types. With this lens, photographers can shoot sports, wildlife or distance landscapes unobtrusively--by standing at a distance from the subject--while creating close-up detailed images. Since a 300mm zoom lens often weighs a few pounds, the camera gear requires special handling to achieve clear, sharply focused pictures.

Instructions

1. Remove the body cap or lens from the single lens reflex camera body by twisting with a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion.

2. Hold the 300mm zoom lens over the camera body opening and line up the matching alignment symbols (usually dots or squares).

3. Place the lens over the body and twist clockwise (or counter-clockwise, depending on lens brand) until the lens clicks into place.

4. Turn on the camera using the power button. This turns on the lens too, so it will begin to respond.

5. Twist the zoom ring on the barrel of the lens to change the focal length. The most zoomed-in view will be the 300mm setting. The widest view will be the shortest focal length available.

6. Look through the lens finder of the camera, frame the subject and rotate the zoom ring of the 300mm zoom lens to the desired focal length. Press the shutter button to capture the image.

7. Lock the lens at its shortest focal length for easy transportation by adjusting the lock tab on the side of the lens.
