Use A Canon 2x Extender With A Full Frame 5d

The 2X extender is a good accessory for wildlife photography.

World War II photographer Robert Cappa once said, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you are not close enough." Using the Canon 2x extender on a full-frame Canon 5D will get you twice as close to the action. Extender lenses like the 2x and the 1.4x, both manufactured by Canon, can be thought of as a magnifying glass for your camera lens. They essentially double the lens focal length, and they also reduce the maximum aperture of the lens that is attached. For example, if you are using a 2x extender with 50mm f1.4, the lens would now become a 100mm, f2.8 lens.

Instructions

1. Hold the Canon 5D full-frame digital single lens reflex camera, with no lens attached, in one hand, and the Canon 2x extender in your other hand. Attach the 2X extender to the camera by lining up the red dot on the outside of the 2X extender barrel to the red dot located on the camera's mounting ring. Place the extender against the 5D and rotate the extender until it clicks into place.

2. Hold the camera with the extender attached in one hand and the lens you are attaching in the other. Attach the lens to the extender in the same way you would normally attach the lens to the camera.

3. Rotate the lens until it clicks in place. The only external switch on the extender is the lens release button. It is located on the side of extender lens. Once the lens is attached, the lens will function the same way it would if attached directly to the camera.

4. Depending on the length of the lens you are working with, and the new focal length it has become, it may be necessary to use a tripod. Generally, any focal length greater than 200mm may need a tripod. This is not due to the weight, but the field of view is narrow, and camera shake is more visible.

5. Hold the Canon 5D with the extender and lens attached, and you will see that the view through the viewfinder will be a little different. It will be darker than it was before because of the reduction in aperture.

6. Press the shutter release halfway down to activate the Canon 5D's autofocus, compose the picture and press the shutter release the rest of the way down to take the picture.
