Clean A Slide Projector Zoom Lens

Keep your slide projector's zoom lens clean for best viewing results.

When you were taking pictures with a camera that was loaded with slide film, you probably took great care to ensure the camera was functioning properly and your lens was clean. You may have even stored your 35mm color slides in protective archival pages, making sure the slides were protected from dust and debris. You may have taken all these precautions in shooting and storing your 35mm slides, but if you don't keep the lens clean on your slide projector, you won't be viewing your slides the best they can be seen.

Instructions

1. Unplug you slide projector, and if you have been viewing slides on it, allow the projector and zoom lens to cool down before cleaning.

2. Use a lens blower brush or a can of compressed air to remove any loose dirt from the front of the lens. If using compressed air, do not hold the can too close to the lens. The intensity of the air being released may drive the dirt or debris further into the lens, making it difficult to get out. Some zoom lenses can be completely removed from the slide projector by rotating the focus knob on the projector until the lens is fully extended. At this point, there may be a small lever or button holding the lens in place. Press the lever or button while cradling the lens with your other hand, and carefully remove the lens from the projector. Repeat the initial cleaning process on the rear of the lens.

3. Moisten a cotton swab with a small amount of lens cleaning fluid. The swab should be moist but not dripping wet. Do not apply the fluid directly to the lens.

4. Clean the lens by starting in the center of the lens and gradually moving the cotton swab to the edges in a circular motion.

5. Use a microfiber lens cloth to remove any residual moisture on the lens.

6. Replace the lens in the slide projector and secure a lens cap to the front of the lens to protect it and prevent any dirt or dust from collecting on the lens.
