When a TiVo is not being used as a digital video recorder, it most likely does not have an active subscription. A TiVo that does not have a subscription won't be able to record programs, but can be used to perform "Trick Play" (pause, fast-forward, rewind live television). To use a Series2 TiVo as a DVR, a subscription to service allows the DVR to update its program guide so that users can schedule recordings. In addition to watching recorded programming, TiVo's connecting to the servers can also rent or buy programming from Amazon OnDemand and much more.
Instructions
1. Activate your TiVo at TiVo's website (See Resources). You will be required to enter the TiVo Service Number on the back of the unit into TiVo's online database; select a subscription plan and enter a credit card number for billing. You can also activate your TiVo by calling Customer Service at 877-367-8486 and selecting the "Activate Service" option.
2. Establish a connection between your TiVo Series2 and the TiVo servers via a phone jack or your wireless Internet network. Connecting the TiVo to a phone line requires plugging a phone jack into the back of the Series2 and running the phone jack into the phone's wall jack.
If you're connecting the TiVo Series2 to the Internet, you need a TiVo Wireless Adapter and wireless Internet access. Plug the USB wireless adapter into the back of the TiVo and have your wireless network security codes handy for synchronization.
3. Turn on the TiVo. After the TiVo runs through its initial setup, it will enter "Guided Setup."
4. Enter your ZIP code when prompted. Then follow the setup to select your signal source (cable, satellite, etc). Then select whether you are connecting through your phone line or Internet on the "TiVo Service Connection" page. Enter any required security codes to allow your TiVo to connect via phone line or Internet.
5. Allow the TiVo to finish programming. When it is done, you can schedule recordings from the program guide or set up Season Passes using the Season Pass manager in TiVo Central.
