The Mackie 1402 VLZ is a sophisticated and full-featured audio mixer capable of taking most any signal through any connector and turning it into usable audio in either a live or studio setting. All of the many connectors and inputs/outputs can be confusing at first, so connecting your turntable to this mixer may prove difficult. However, it is possible to do so as long as you have a phono preamp with which to convert the audio signal from the turntable to one usable by the mixer.
Instructions
1. Verify that you have everything you need to hook up your turntable, preamp and mixer. You should have a turntable, one stereo RCA cable, a phono preamp, two quarter-inch audio cables and your Mackie mixer. Set the turntable, preamp and mixer up in close proximity, plug them in and turn on the power.
2. Connect the left and right (white and red) RCA output cables from the turntable to the left and right inputs on the preamp. Turn the gain knob on the preamp to "Zero" to ensure the connection doesn't make any unwanted noise when plugging things in.
3. Connect one end of a quarter-inch audio cable to the left output jack on the back of the preamp. Connect the other end of this cable to a non-phantom powered channel on the Mackie mixer. The channel will now control the left channel from the turntable.
4. Connect one end of a quarter-inch audio cable to the right output jack on the back of the preamp. Connect the other end of this cable to a channel on the Mackie mixer. The channel will now control the right channel from the turntable.
5. Play a record on your turntable. Turn up both the gain on the preamp and the volume fader of the left and right channels on your mixer until you can hear the record clearly. Pay attention to the master audio level of the mixer. The loudness level should never exceed "0dB" for the safety of the equipment and the integrity of the music you are playing.
