A subscriber identity module (SIM) card is a portable memory chip used by cellular service providers that operate on the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM). In the United States, the iPhone is sold for exclusive use on AT&T's GSM cellular network. Therefore, in order to activate and then use your iPhone, you need to insert a SIM card into it. The process is not as straightforward as inserting a SIM card into most cellular telephones.
Instructions
1. Insert a paperclip or SIM eject tool into the hole located to the right of the headphone jack. Press firmly when inserting the paperclip or SIM eject tool. The SIM tray pops open.
2. Use your hand to pull and and remove the SIM tray. Insert a SIM card into the empty SIM tray. The SIM card is angled and fits into the SIM tray only if inserted correctly.
3. Use your finger to hold the SIM card in place in the SIM tray and carefully reinsert the SIM tray into the iPhone. The SIM tray fits in the iPhone only if it is inserted in the correct position.
4. Restart your iPhone. The iPhone now recognizes the new SIM card.
