Installing A Satellite Dish

Finding the Perfect Mounting Location

The first thing that has to be done when installing a satellite dish is to find a mounting location that doesn't have anything that will block the dish's view of the sky. The exact direction that your dish will need to point depends on the specific satellite TV service that you are getting; you should be able to get this information from your satellite provider.

Installing the Satellite Dish

Installing a satellite dish generally involves screwing in a mounting bracket to hold the dish to the side or roof of your house. Depending on whether you have a brick home or siding, you may have to use screw anchors in pre-drilled holes in order to keep the dish in place; regardless of whether you have to use anchors or not, make sure that the dish is securely fastened to the surface you are mounting it to. Once mounted, you should be able to make minor adjustments to the position of the satellite's dish, allowing you to point it in the specific direction and angle that the satellite provider gave you for your optimal connection. Once you've found the optimal mounting position, you need to run the cable and do some fine-tuning.

Connecting the Satellite Tuner

The cable that runs from your satellite dish to your satellite tuner should be fastened using small brackets to the side of your house, running it in either through the corner of a window or through a small drilled hole (generally low in the wall and close to your TV). The cable should be hooked up to your satellite tuner through the coaxial connection on the back of the tuner, just as you would connect standard cable television to a DVR unit or to your television. The tuner should have a card with it that was provided by your satellite provider that tells the tuner which channels you should get and should be left in the tuner's card slot at all times. Once connected, you can fine-tune the angle of your dish until you have the exact angle to give you the best signal possible for your satellite connection. Some services even have on-screen assistance in the tuner menu that helps you find the optimal angle for your dish.
