Use Sb600 Wireless With D70s

Standalone TTL flash unit

The SB-600 is a standalone strobe flash unit and a key component of Nikon's Creative Lighting System. Cameras such as the Nikon D70s are able to wirelessly transmit TTL (Through the Lens) data to one or more off-camera flash units. The latest systems offered by Nikon and its competitors have revolutionized flash photography by combining powerful flash capabilities with extremely portable devices. If you have a SB-600 flash unit and a D70s digital SLR camera, you are ready to start exploring the exciting creative possibilities offered by today's flash technologies.

Instructions

Set the Camera

1. Digital SLR camera contols

Set your camera's mode. You can use P (program), S (shutter), A (aperture) or M (manual).

2. Menu button on a digital SLR camera

Press the Menu button and set the Flash Mode to "Commander Mode" and "TTL." In TTL Commander Mode, the camera will determine the correct amount of power to send to the flash unit in order to achieve the correct exposure. As you gain experience, you may want to try Manual mode, which will allow you to specify the power output of your remote SB-600 units.

3. Popup the on-camera flash unit. In this configuration, the on-camera flash is used only to signal the remote flash unit or units. It does not contribute significant illumination to the scene.

Prepare the SB-600 Flash Unit

4. Attach a Nikon SB-600 flash unit to a light stand.

5. Press the On/Off button to turn on the SB-600 flash unit.

6. Press the Zoom and "-" buttons simultaneously in order to enter the "Custom Settings Mode" (CSM).

7. Press the "+" or "-" button to scroll through the list of SB-600 options. The wireless remote flash mode is indicated by a Z-shaped arrow.

8. Press the "Mode" button to toggle the wireless remote flash mode on.

Experiment With Off-Camera Lighting

9. Position the SB-600 flash unit away from the camera. The unit may be aimed directly at the subject or bounced off walls and ceilings to achieve indirect lighting effects.

10. Compose your photograph.

11. Press the shutter release to take the photo.

12. View the captured photo on the D70s screen and adjust the Speedlight position to improve lighting if necessary. You can achieve very different effects by changing the position of the light.

13. Add additional Speedlights to achieve more sophisticated lighting effects. Secondary light sources are commonly used to illuminate the background or to add highlights to the main subject.
