Use A Telephoto Lens With A Tripod

Keep your large telephoto lenses stable on a tripod.

Telephoto lenses are used to take photographs of objects that are far away. To accomplish this, lens manufacturers must use extra glass and larger distances within the lens. The result is a large lens. While most tripod photography involves attaching the camera directly to the tripod, telephoto lenses are a different story. The size of telephoto lenses makes it more sensible to attach the lens to the tripod rather than the camera.

Instructions

1. Attach your telephoto lens tripod collar to your telephoto lens. Many telephoto lenses come standard with tripod collar mounts.

2. Connect your telephoto lens to your camera and lock it into place.

3. Secure your telephoto lens to your tripod using the tripod mounting screw or quick release plate. The telephoto lens is directly supported by the tripod while the camera body is supported by the lens.

4. Adjust your camera settings to allow for the fastest shutter speed possible, and use a delayed shutter action or cable release. Telephoto lenses are designed to magnify far away objects, which turns minor shakes of the camera and lens into blurry photos. Using faster shutter speeds and delayed shutter actions or cable releases decreases the chances of your pictures coming out blurry.
