It appears that radios and CD/DVD players are increasingly being cast aside as the player-of-choice by many vehicle owners. The popular, highly portable iPod is becoming a standard take-along travel accessory. While newer vehicle radios are sometimes equipped with auxiliary jacks that make plugging an iPod in easy, older vehicles do not possess this option. A few methods exist for modifying a car radio to accept an iPod jack and each will produce a sound level ranging from poor to very good. Connecting a wired FM modulator to your car radio will produce good sound with moderately easy installation.

1. Turn the power switch on the modulator unit to the OFF position. Select location for mounting. Common mounting locations include the trunk or under the car seat.
2. Detach and remove car radio from dashboard. Disconnect the car battery before getting started to avoid short-circuiting the electrical system. Find the screws securing the radio to the dashboard and unscrew. Pull the radio toward you gently, but firmly so you do not accidentally disconnect any wires.
3. Unplug antennae cable from the back of the radio and plug it into the antennae input jack on the FM Modulator.
4. Plug one end of the connector cable into the OUTPUT jack of the modulator and the other end into the radio's antennae INPUT jack. If your unit requires an antennae adapter, attach it by pushing it onto the end of the connector cable prior to inserting into the radio's INPUT jack.
5. Determine and set radio frequency to allow for the best reception. Tie up loose cable wire with cable ties and tuck out of sight. Reinstall radio in car dashboard. Reconnect car battery.
