Replacing the speakers in your car is one of the best ways to improve the sound quality of the factory stereo system. Depending on your vehicle, it doesn't take a pro to do the job, either. Here's go about it.
Instructions
1. Purchase new speakers for your car's doors. Depending on your car's make and model, there may be several different models and sizes that will work. Consult with a reputable online car audio merchant or your local car audio shop to find speakers that match your specific vehicle. These sources can also recommend speakers based on the kind of music you listen to and the kind of stereo (factory or aftermarket) that's currently in your car.
2. Remove your car's door panels. Every vehicle is different, but there are certain common themes in how the door is removed. First remove any portions like door handles and window cranks, then loosen and remove any mounting screws, nuts or bolts. Finally, remove the door panel. It may need to be pried off with a panel tool, or may lift off. The internet is an excellent resource for "how-to" instructions on particular car models. Some car audio retailers, like crutchfield.com, will even supply the instructions for free with a speaker purchase.
3. Remove the old speakers. This is usually as easy as removing a few screws--occasionally a bit more involved. Once the speaker is out of its mounting location, you'll need to disconnect the speaker wires. In most cases, they simply unplug, with special molex-style connectors.
4. Connect the new speakers to the speaker wiring. It may be necessary to clip off the factory speaker connector when wiring the new speakers, but some retailers can sell, or provide for free with speaker purchase, special connectors that hook into the factory speaker wiring.
5. Mount the new speakers into the door. Test the speakers, then replace your door panels by reversing your previous steps. Enjoy the difference in sound!
