Know If My Camera Has Ir Shooting Mode

Take dreamlike images with your digital camera by shooting infrared.

IR photography is a type of imaging that captures the infrared light spectrum instead of the visible light spectrum that most images contain. You can use infrared photography to create surreal photos that have dark skies and strong, glowing highlights. Although digital cameras are inherently suitable for capturing infrared light, many manufacturers employ a blocking mechanism to disable this function due to privacy concerns and unintentional image softening. You can determine whether your camera can shoot IR with a few easy steps.

Instructions

1. Choose a relatively dark environment with only ambient lighting to test your camera. An indoor location during the daytime with the lights out works particularly well. Turn your camera on and set your shutter speed to take a long exposure of about three to five seconds.

2. Aim your remote directly into the lens about 2 feet from the camera. Press the shutter release button and any button on your remote simultaneously. Hold the remote button until you hear the shutter close.

3. Check the image preview on the preview panel on the back of your camera. If light appears to come from the top of the remote, your camera has IR shooting capabilities. The brighter the light, the more well-suited your camera is to take infrared images.
