Sony's mini hi-fi component systems are sometimes called bookshelf stereos because they fit conveniently on a bookshelf rather than needing the more substantial location that a full-sized hi-fi needs. The lack of a turntable that needs horizontal and vertical space makes the systems suitable for miniaturization. They are also sometimes called personal component systems. Problems with the systems can be related to the individual components.
Instructions
1. Open the lid of the CD compartment and check to see if there's a disc loaded if the audio doesn't start playing. Make sure that the disc is label side up. In humid climates, check for moisture on the CD and wipe it dry. If the mini hi-fi has become damp, allow the moisture to evaporate by switching the hi-fi on for an hour.
2. Relocate the component system to a more solid surface if the CD skips. While these devices aren't as susceptible to vibration as a turntable, if they are placed on nonsolid surfaces they can skip. Likewise with the speakers--if the speakers are turned up loud and are on the same shelf as the CD player, vibration from the cones can cause the CD to skip.
3. Check that the antenna is connected properly if the tuner component doesn't work properly. Remember that the included FM antenna wire receives signals along its length, so extend it. Keep the speaker wires away from the antenna wire.
4. Press the "Aux" button or selector if you are trying to play music from an MP3-type music player through the component system. The music player won't be output properly if "Tuner," "CD" or other components are selected as the source.
