Inspection For Proper Use Of Calipers

Calipers are sensitive to damage and misuse.

It is crucial to inspect calipers for improper use before using them to measure precision parts. Improper use can include dropping them or using excessive repeated force to make measurements.

Significance

Calipers are used to measure a variety of things. Since many of the dimensions have to be within a fraction of an inch, it is important to check the condition of the calipers to ensure that the measurements are accurate.

Procedure

Close the calipers all the way and hold them up to a light source. Improperly used calipers may have a gap between the two main measuring blades. If so, you may want to set them aside or have them fixed as the gap can cause false measurements.

Considerations

Clean the set of calipers off before inspecting. Dirt and debris can cause the gap that may lead to inaccurate readings, so make sure that all hindrances are removed from the main slide. Although a gap could signify improper use, it is best to clean the calipers before proceeding with an inspection.
