Troubleshoot A Sony 1gb Memory Stick Pro Duo

Sony's Memory Stick Pro Duo media storage devices allow storage and transport of data in a highly portable format. The same memory stick devices can be used in computers, cameras, printers, MP3 players and Sony's PSP gaming system. If your 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo is not reading or writing data correctly, several troubleshooting steps can be taken to return the device to working order or find out whether it is faulty.

Instructions

1. Reset the device in which you are attempting to use the Memory Stick Pro Duo. Many media errors can be fixed simply by allowing the host device to reboot and read the stick with a clean memory bank.

2. Flick the small "Write Protection" switch on the top edge of the stick to "Off." If this switch is set to "On," no files can be written to the stick and data transfer will be impaired in some devices.

3. Connect your memory stick to the supplied USB adapter and plug the adapter into your PC. If your memory stick-compatible devices are not reading the medium, the ability to connect to your PC will tell you whether the fault lies with the stick or with the device you are trying to use it in.

4. Download the Memory Card File Rescue and Memory Stick Formatter software from the sites in the Resources section. Double-click the downloaded files to install then connect your Memory Stick Pro Duo, either via adapter or your computer's memory stick port. Use the File Rescue software to copy any files that can be recovered from the device, then use the Formatter program to reformat the device, which will fix many connection problems.

5. Contact Sony to arrange a repair if the above steps do not work. Your device may be defective and in need of replacement or refurbishment.
