Digital Camera Features For Kids

Help your kids take better pictures with kid-friendly digital camera features.

If you're a parent who has given your child a disposable camera, you know that it's not necessarily a good investment. The pictures, if they come out at all, are usually pictures of nothing. More often than not, disposable cameras are a waste of money. Instead, buy a special kid's digital camera that has features that makes it easy for kids to use.

Buttons

Depending on the age of your child, choose a digital camera for kids that has only as many buttons as necessary. The younger the child, the fewer the buttons the camera should have. For the youngest children, two buttons are plenty: one for taking the picture and another for deleting pictures from the camera's memory. As the child gets older and can understand a little more, select a camera with more buttons, such as for focusing or zooming. Buttons that are clearly marked with their function are preferable. When your first buy a camera for your kids, demonstrate the use of the buttons with them, even if it's only a two-button digital camera specifically made for preschoolers.

Screen

The screen on a digital camera is an important feature. No matter what the age of your kids, the screen is what will help them know what they're taking pictures of. When they can see the potential picture via the screen, teach them stand still and hold the camera as still as possible so they can take a clear picture. Digital cameras have all different size screens. The larger the screen, the better when buying a camera for your child.

Memory

The memory feature may not be something that first comes to your mind when buying a digital camera for your kids. However, some children's cameras only hold about 15 pictures. For kids, such a camera will last them about five minutes, if that. Make sure the camera you buy has an expandable memory or can hold memory cards.

Grid Feature

The grid feature is good for older kids who aren't quite ready for an expensive digital camera. The grid feature allows kids to decide take their shot. Professionals line up the subject of the picture along one of the lines. The grid can also help kids line up more than one subject to make sure that all subjects are properly framed in the shot. This is a good feature to use when your kids are really interested in photography and want to learn some of the basics of taking pictures.
