Type & Uses Of Light Bulbs

There are many different types of light bulbs available, so many that it can be confusing to choose the right light bulb for the job. However, the kind of bulb that is used can make a noticeable difference both in the quality of light produced and the monthly electric bill.

Types: Incandescent

Incandescent bulbs are by far the most common type of light bulb, and are found in almost every home. Incandescent bulbs use a tungsten filament to produce a steady warm light that is suitable for many household applications.

Types: Halogen Bulbs

The halogen bulb is an evolution of the original incandescent bulb technology, and like an incandescent, uses a tungsten filament. However, halogen bulbs contain a gas (halogen) that causes them to burn much brighter than an incandescent. Halogen bulbs are frequently used in automobiles due to their compact size and high light output.

Function: General Purpose Lighting

In an area that needs general purpose lighting, such as basement or storage locker, fluorescent lights are often used. Fluorescent light bulbs use little power (80 percent less than incandescents), have a 20,000 hour lifespan, and provide a cool white light. Their low power consumption and long life make fluorescent bulbs popular for industrial use.

Misconceptions

When it comes to light bulbs, the compact fluorescent (CFs) is easy to ignore because it's higher price leads many homeowners to purchase incandescent bulbs. However, CFs lasts approximately 12,000 hours (roughly 8 years) and use 75 percent less energy than an incandescent bulb.

Considerations

Purchasing light bulbs without examining all of the options such as compact fluorescents instead of incandescents can lead to a considerable amount of wasted money due to higher electric bills.

Warning

When installing halogen bulbs in the home or automobile, be careful not to touch them. Halogen bulbs get very hot and are extremely sensitive to skin oils, even a little oil on the glass can make them burst or burn out prematurely. Always wear gloves when handling halogen bulbs.
