Understand Megapixels

Digital images consist of pixels that are the smallest piece of data. A higher number of pixels typically indicate better image resolution and a higher image quality. In the metric system, the prefix "mega" indicates the quantity of one million. Since an image may contain millions of pixels, this prefix allows you to express a large number using the term "megapixels." The number of megapixels often refers to the resolution of digital cameras.

Instructions

1. Right-click on any image saved on your computer, and then click "Properties." Click the tab "Details" in the properties window.

2. Read the image dimensions in pixels. For example, the height is 1,800 pixels and the width is 1,000 pixels.

3. Multiply the height by the width to calculate the total number of pixels that make up the image. For example, 1,000 times 1,800 equals 1,800,000 pixels.

4. Divide the pixels by 1,000,000 to calculate the megapixels. In this example, 1,800,000 divided by 1,000,000 equals 1.8 megapixels.
