Whether you use a Canon charger or an off-label brand, make sure the unit can handle the power rating of an NB-5L battery.
Compatible Chargers
When purchased new from an authorized Canon retailer, the Canon SD790 IS camera comes with a Canon CB-2LX battery charger. If you've lost the battery charger or one wasn't supplied at the time of purchase, buy a battery charger compatible with the NB-5L battery. Using a charger designed for other battery packs can supply the wrong amount of power to the rechargeable battery, causing the battery or charger to malfunction.
Power Specifications
The NB-5L battery has a power storage capacity of 1120 milliampere hours. Using a battery charger designed for a lower capacity battery won't provide a sufficient charge for the NB-5L battery. Using a battery charger with a higher rating can cause the battery to become unstable and burst.
Charging Batteries
To charge the NB-5L battery, remove it from the Canon camera and slide the battery into the recessed area on the front of the cordless charger. The metal contact points on the battery and charger should touch. Plug the cordless unit into an electrical outlet and wait for the charge indicator lamp just above the battery to turn green. A fully exhausted battery can recharge to full capacity in approximately 125 minutes.
