An Aiwa Three-CD Changer is similar to all CD players in that a laser is used to read the compact disc placed in it. Vibrations from the player's motor can cause the laser "eye" to no longer be at the optimal position for reaching data off the CD. You can fix the laser so that it once again is looking directly at the CD from the proper position. A few household tools are needed since you will have to partially disassemble the Aiwa.
Instructions
1. Press the "Eject" button on the front of the Aiwa CD player to eject the disc tray. Remove the discs from inside the tray. Close the tray, turn off the Aiwa and unplug its power cord from the wall outlet.
2. Turn the Aiwa around so that the back is facing you. Remove the screws from the top left and right corners on the back panel with a Philips screwdriver. Remove the screws from the lower left and right corners on the back panel with the screwdriver. Remove the screws along the bottom edge.
3. Grip the sides of the Aiwa and pull the outer cover towards you. Stop pulling once a gap is seen between the far end of the outer cover and the front panel. Insert the tip of a flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the gap at one side. Pull the tip back toward you to further increase the gap. Repeat this on the right side of the Aiwa. Grip the sides of the outer cover and pull it off. Place it aside.
4. Locate the spindle at the center of the motor on the inside of the Aiwa -- the disc tray is connected to one end of the motor. Push the disc tray away from the motor to extend it fully outwards.
5. Shine a flashlight at the spindle to reflect the beam off the laser lens. Make a note of where the laser lens is located. Locate the screw that is next to the lens -- the potentiometer, or "pot," can be used to change the position of the laser "eye."
6. Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the "pot" screw. Rotate the screw a quarter turn clockwise.
7. Plug the Aiwa's power cord back into the wall outlet. Place a CD on the disc tray and close the tray (use the Aiwa's remote control to do this). Press the "Play" button and listen to how the CD sounds -- if it doesn't sound OK, stop the disc, unplug the power cord and adjust the "pot" screw a quarter turn again. If the CD sounds okay, stop the CD playing and remove the disc after ejecting the disc tray. Unplug the power cord and place the outer cover back on the Aiwa. Reattach the screws.
