Recover Deleted Pictures

If you delete pictures from your computer by accident, or if you delete them on purpose and find that you need them later, all is not lost. It's not always a sure bet that you can get the pictures back, but if you download recovery software, you usually have a decent chance of retrieving them.

Instructions

1. Check your Recycle Bin first to make sure that your pictures aren't still there. If you deleted them and never emptied the Recycle Bin, you could get them back easily. Your Recycle Bin is a little icon of a trash can on your desktop. Double-click on that. If you see your pictures there, right-click on the one you want and select "Restore." The file will go back to the folder where you originally deleted it.

2. Download recovery software if you can't find your files in the Recycle Bin. Examples of such programs include Pandora and File Scavenger (See Resources). Click on the link for the one you want to go to the program page. Hit "Download Now" to begin downloading.

3. Install the installation file by opening it. Begin the program by double-clicking on the shortcut icon. In the program, select the disk that you want to recover. This often will be your "C" drive.

4. Choose the option for browsing through the files on your computer that are slated to be deleted but that aren't actually gone off your computer yet. This often will be labeled "Browse." Click "Next" or "Begin" to start the process. Once your drive is open, you can search for your deleted pictures.

5. Open "My Documents" and then "My Pictures" for a good place to start looking. Once you've found your pictures, it should tell you whether the file has been overwritten or not. If it hasn't, then you can click a button marked "recover" or something similar to get your photos back.
