Change The Film Speed On A Canon Ae1

Adjusting the film speed on your AE-1 will help you take high quality photos.

When using film cameras, it is always important to make sure the camera is set to the proper film speed. Following these few simple steps will prevent improper readings by the light meter that could result in overexposed or underexposed photos. Accurately positioning the film speed is easy to do and will help your photos reach their maximum potential.

Instructions

1. Choose what type of film you want to use and load it into the camera. Make sure to note the speed of the film itself, it should be written on the box. Film speed is measured in ISO values.

2. Push the film advance lever slightly (about 1/3 of the way) so that you are able to place your fingers on opposite sides of the silver dial that is located directly beneath it. The silver ring is mainly used to select your shutter speed but the same dial is used to adjust the film speed.

3. Pull up on the ring away from the camera. This allows you to change the film speed when turning the dial. Rotate the dial until the green number in the display matches the ISO value of your film. The camera labels these numbers as ASA values however they are equivalent to ISO values that are used today to measure film speed.

4. Push the silver dial down back to its original position. You can now return to using the dial to set the shutter speed.
