Accessorizing your lens can bring added functionality to it.
The 18-55mm lens is a standard kit lens that Canon ships with many of its cameras. It is readily compatible with the Canon 10D, a professional-level digital camera. While the two units can be used without preparation, adding a few elements can enhance your shooting experience. When adding elements to your lens, be careful not to damage the glass or the moving parts. Altering the lens in a manner not recommended by Canon may result in a damaged item, if done incorrectly.
Instructions
Attach a Filter
1. Rotate a 58mm UV filter onto the front of the lens to attach it. This filter will protect the lens from scratches and minor impacts. In addition, it will remove some of the haze that occurs over long distances outdoors.
2. Rotate a 58mm polarizing filter onto the front of the lens to attach it. This filter will allow you to see through some transparent objects, such as water or windows. Simply rotate the filter once it's attached to vary the degree of polarization.
3. Rotate a 58mm ND filter onto the front of the lens to attach it. This filter will reduce some of the light that enters the camera, independent of your current camera settings. Typically, ND filters are only used on days that are very bright.
Attach a Follow Focus
4. Mount the follow focus to your camera, depending on its style. Some attach to the tripod mount below the camera and others simply snap to the camera's body.
5. Set the lens to manual focus by pushing the lens switch to "M." Leave the switch at this setting while the follow focus is attached.
6. Align the gear of the follow focus with the focusing gear of the 18-55mm lens. Rotate the focus handle to verify that the two parts are aligned and rotate smoothly.
7. Rotate the focus wheel as you look through the camera to see if the focal distance changes. Use a dry erase marker to mark focus distances on the focus wheel so that you return to them easily.
