Sirius satellite radio broadcasts commercial-free music, along with sporting events and talk radio shows. In order to listen to the signal, a customer must have a valid Sirius subscription and some type of receiver, such as the Sirius boombox. The boombox consists of an antenna to pick up the signal and then a receiver module that decodes the signal into a recognizable frequency. The boombox is one of Sirius' most versatile receivers, with an optional vehicle mount and antenna available that allows the customer to use the receiver module from the boombox unit in his car.
Setting Up
The Sirius boombox can be operated either on battery power or by using the AC power cord. To install the batteries, open the battery compartment on the rear of the unit by pressing down on the latches until the cover pops off. Insert eight D-size batteries according to the layout shown on the battery compartment and replace the cover. Connect the windowsill antenna cord into the "ANT" connector on the back of the boombox. Insert the boombox connector into the left side of the receiver and set the bottom edge of the receiver into the compartment on the front of the boombox. Push back on the top of the receiver until it snaps into place.
Antenna Placement
The Sirius antenna must have a clear path to the sky in order to receive the satellite signal. It may not work in areas with large buildings or trees overhead. If you cannot find a place where the top of the antenna will have a 360-degree view of the sky, you may still be able to receive a signal by aiming your antenna in the direction of the satellite. The satellite is located above the central northern part of the United States. The exact direction you need to aim your antenna will depend on where you live in relation to this point. For example, if you live in Florida, you will need to aim your antenna to the northwest. There are also Sirius ground repeaters located in many major U.S. cities, so you may be able to receive a signal even with no view of the sky. Check the signal strength indicator on the receiver's screen to see if you are getting a good enough signal. Usually, this requires three or more bars on the signal strength display.
