Use Phone Cards

Phone cards, also known as calling cards, are not nearly as common as they once were due to the proliferation of cell phones. However, there are still times when you may need to use one, whether it's at a pay phone or to make a long distance call without being charged extra fees. While phone cards are simple to use, if you've never used one you may not be sure what to do. These cards often have instructions on the back if you get stuck.

1. Find the access number for the company that sponsors your calling card. It should be printed on your card, usually somewhere on the back. It is almost always a toll-free number. Now find the card's personal identification number (PIN). This four-digit number also will be printed on the card. Sometimes it is hidden under a gray film that you need to scratch off.

2. Dial the access number, remembering to add a 1 first if it is long distance. You will get the voice of an automated system that will ask for your PIN. Enter it and then dial the phone number you would like to call. If it's an international call, enter the country code first (see list in resources) and then the area code and phone number. In some cases you also will need to dial an access code. It should say so on your phone card.

3. Wait for your call to connect. If it doesn't, check to make sure you have the right phone number. If you do, try calling back. If it still doesn't work, follow Step 2 to the point where you enter your PIN. Then stay on the line or press zero to speak to an operator.

4. Hang up the phone at the end of your call unless you would like to make another one immediately after. If this is the case, look on your card for a termination code. Type it in. Then dial your new phone number. If you can't find the termination code, follow the instructions in Step 3 to reach an operator or just hang up and repeat Step 2.
