Find the perfect home audio system.
The home audio system consists of three basic components, speakers, receiver and DVD/CD player. Ideally, you could spend weeks deciding on the components for a new home audio system. However, time being precious, a relatively organized approach might significantly reduce time spent while resulting in a satisfying choice of a new home audio system.
Instructions
The Speaker System
1. Determine the allotted space and range of the budget to be spent on speakers. Remember, speakers can cost as much as a new SUV and be almost as big.
2. Play your favorite CDs and listen to the most enjoyable selections while switching between speaker systems.
3. Compare the quality of reproduction of all the speakers in the selected price range during the preferred portions of the musical composition and make a selection.
The Receiver
4. Audition receivers in the budgetary price range that include an AM/FM stereo tuner, a pre-amplifier or control center and an amplifier which drives the speakers. Most receivers also include a remote control.
5. Make certain that the amplifier section generates adequate power for all the speakers to be connected to it if played at medium volume simultaneously. The total output wattage per channel should be about 10 percent to 20 percent higher than the manufacturer's recommended power required by the speaker system.
6. Examine the receiver control panel and remote, looking for all the desired sound adjustments and component selection such as CD/DVD, video, tape, phono, etc.
The DVD/CD player
7. Look for convenience features on the models in the budget range including the capability of loading more than one disk at a time, remote control features and capability of playing all kinds of disks, including Blu-ray.
8. Decide whether the selected receiver and DVD/CD player are a reasonably close physical match, if cosmetic appearance is an issue.
9. Play your favorite CDs on the DVD/CD component, powered by the selected receiver, while listening to the speakers of choice.
