Car Alarm Consumer Information

According to Galt Technology, car alarms are available to deter theft with a variety of types of sensors. When the alarm is triggered, it emits a loud sound and often flashes the car's lights as well.

Connection

Car alarms connect to the car's electrical system, but some include a backup battery in the event that the battery has been disconnected, according to Galt Technology.

Types

According to The Unofficial DMV Guide, types of alarms include movement sensors, door or window sensors, sensors that detect a change of pressure inside the car and tilt sensors (which detect an attempt to tow). Some systems include multiple sensors.

Cost

Galt Technology reports that basic systems may cost between $40 and $50 as of 2010. More expensive systems can cost as much as $195.

Installation

Galt Technology recommends hiring a professional to ensure that your system is installed properly. Expect to pay another $40 to $50 for installation.

Tracking

Tracking systems such as LoJack, Mobile Guardian or Smart Tracking supply extra protection for your car. According to Galt Technology, some thieves find ways around the various alarm systems. A radio-transmitted tracking system can be hidden somewhere on your car, allowing police to locate your car and recover it.
