Put A Tape On A Dvd

Depending on the type of equipment you are more comfortable working with, there are two ways to transfer VHS tapes to DVD. You can either use a DVD recording unit, which works much like a normal VCR, or you can use a video capture card on your computer.

Instructions

DVD Recorder

1. Connect the DVD recorder's power cable into a wall outlet and then hook the RCA cables to the corresponding ports on the back of your TV. Connect the VCR to the VHS port.

2. Check to see if the DVD recorder uses DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, or DVD-RW media. Acquire a corresponding blank DVD and place it in the recorder's DVD drive.

3. Use the rewind and fast forward buttons to locate the specific segment of the VHS tape you want to transfer to DVD. Rewind the VHS tape back to the beginning if you want to transfer the entire video.

4. Press the recorder's "Record" or "Copy" button and wait for the machine to copy the VHS tape to the blank DVD.

Video Capture Card

5. Refer to your computer's manual or check the ports on the back of the case to determine if the computer already has a built-in video capture expansion card. Purchase an external USB video capture card if your computer does not have an internal card.

6. Hook the capture card's cable into any open USB port. Place the card's driver installation disk into your computer's disk drive. Follow the installation instructions that appear on the screen.

7. Connect the VCR's RCA cables to the RCA ports on the capture card. Insert the VHS tape into the VCR and power it on. Open the video capture card's software.

8. Click "Play" to display the VHS tape's video on your screen. Use the fast forward button or the slider bar to skip ahead to the portion of the video you want to put on DVD. Click "Capture."

9. Wait for the software to finish capturing the entire VHS video or instead click "Stop" if you only want to capture part of the video. Select "Save" to save the VHS video onto your hard drive.

10. Put a blank DVD into your computer's DVD recording drive. Select "Burn a DVD Disc" when the new window pops-up on the screen. Click the "Mastered Disc" radio button to create a standard DVD for viewing in a DVD player.

11. Locate the VHS file you transferred to your computer. Click the file and drag it into the DVD burning window. Click "Burn."
