Computer Camera Used As A Security Camera

Use a webcam as a security camera.

Instead of purchasing an expensive security system, computer owners with a simple webcam can turn it into a motion detecting security camera. The process is simple and free as long as you already have the webcam.

Function

Through the software application Dorgem, images are captured through a webcam by using motion detection. Dorgem is a freeware application that runs on all Windows-based computers.

Features

Through Dorgem settings, you can test and set up your camera. Select a save location, enable motion detection and choose how frequently you want to take a picture. Plug in your webcam and select it from the drop-down menu.

Benefits

The motion detection in the software allows you to save hard drive space by only taking pictures when someone or something goes by the camera. Additionally, regular security systems can cost over $100.

Types

Dorgem is compatible with almost any type of web camera. If you have multiple webcams, you can run multiple versions of the software to capture different angles near your computer.

Considerations

Because it is connected through a computer, the vision is limited. Webcams do not have as good of quality as a standard camera, but screenshots can often get bigger than 600 by 800 resolution.
