Install & Charge A Capacitor

If you're after big bass, you should install a capacitor for your amplifier.

Capacitors are commonly used in performance car audio systems to ensure enough power is available to the amplifier when it draws excess current to supply large amounts of bass sporadically. Installing and charging a capacitor in your car audio system does not require a professional electrician. By following a few simple steps you can safely and efficiently install and charge your own capacitor, which will help to protect your car's other electrical systems.

Instructions

Install the Capacitor

1. Disconnect the positive power cable from the positive terminal of the car's battery.

2. Disconnect the positive power cable from the car's amplifier and connect it to the positive terminal on the capacitor. Secure it in place using your screwdriver.

3. Connect one end of a 1-foot length of power cabling to the same positive terminal on the capacitor and the other end to the positive terminal on the amplifier. Secure in place using your screwdriver.

4. Connect one end of the other 1-foot length of power cable to the negative terminal of the capacitor and the other end to a bare metal surface of the car. The car's chassis and body are all connected to the negative terminal of the battery, so any clean, bare metal surface will provide a good grounding connection.

5. Reconnect the positive cable to its terminal on the battery. When the car is started and the amplifier turn on, the capacitor will begin to charge and will remain charged even when everything is turned off. Capacitors store electric charges, so do not allow any conducting material to touch the terminals on the capacitor after the installation.
