Memory Card
You've worked hard getting just the right photos. When you go to view them or transfer them, they are suddenly gone. Deleted photo files on a memory card can seem impossible to restore when you start to panic. However, they can be easily restored. Whether you've accidentally deleted the photo or a system glitch caused the file or files to be deleted, there is a free program available to help restore your precious photo files.
Instructions
1. Remove the memory card from your device and insert it into a memory card reader. Some computers are equipped with built-in readers. If you don't have one, you can find them at most electronics stores.
2. Download TestDisk (see "Additional Resources," below). Unzip the files. For Windows users, right click the file, choose "Unzip" and press "Extract All Files." Open the extracted folder once complete.
3. Open the folder "testdisk-6.10." The version number may vary depending on your version and operating system.
4. Go to the folder "win" for Windows users. Other operating systems will see their operating system instead. Choose "photorec_win" to run the file recovery software.
5. Use your arrow keys to select the media to recover files from. Press "Enter" to continue.
6. Select your partition type. If you are uncertain, choose "None."
7. Choose an option from the bottom of the screen.
"Search" starts the file recovery. Files found are stored in the "recup_dir.1" directory in the "win" folder from Step 4.
"Options" allows you to change whether to try to salvage corrupt files or not.
"File Opt" allows you to select which file extensions to search for.
"Quit" quits the program.
